The morning dawned with the constant sounds of all the creatures waking up, and business began to pick up, little by little, as the sun rose high in the sky.

With the constant sounds of animals reaching his ears, Noir slowly woke up, like a lazy cat; he tried to stretch as he usually did.

But... some arms were holding him back; his red eyes moved slowly, only to find Arlene’s breasts just centimeters from his face.

’If I’d had a humanoid body, things would have been different.’ The young black dragon sighed, slowly turning away, and then stretched. "Hmmm... much better."

Uki had also woken up and wagged his tail, as if saying good morning, just like the golden orb, which emitted several flashes of light.

Noir walked over to the window, leaned on the sill, and looked out at the city and all the creatures he hadn’t been able to devour the night before.

’Well, it’s not like I’m in such a hurry; I have time on my side.’ A wicked smile spread across the dragon’s face; he looked like a thief planning his next heist.

A few minutes later, Arlene woke up and got her things ready after washing up properly.

The half-human carefully slung her staff over her back while checking one last time to make sure the temporary registration tags were still attached to her belt.

"Ready?"

"No."

She raised an eyebrow.

"I can’t find breakfast."

Arlene let out a little laugh.

"The guild comes first."

"That doesn’t answer my question."

"It will when we get out."

Noir finally accepted that answer with a slight snort.

The four of them left the inn shortly afterward. The streets were much more crowded than the day before. Adventurers of all ages walked along, carrying enormous backpacks.

Some dragged empty cages.

Others carried ropes, pickaxes, torches, and tools whose purpose Noir couldn’t figure out.

Entire groups pored over maps on the benches in the square. Others were arguing heatedly as they compared scrolls covered in notes.

Noir began observing them one by one.

As they moved forward, more and more people clad in armor appeared.

They finally arrived in front of the enormous building of the Adventurers’ Guild. The activity there was even busier than the day before.

Dozens of people constantly came and went.

In one corner, several groups were gathered around a gigantic wooden board covered with scrolls.

Some tore one off and left immediately. Others debated for several minutes before deciding.

Noir narrowed his eyes slightly.

"What are they doing?"

Arlene followed his gaze.

"They’re choosing missions."

The young dragon looked back at the bulletin board.

"No."

He discreetly pointed to a much larger group gathered around a different bulletin board.

"They."

Arlene smiled.

"That one."

She paused briefly.

"It’s the dungeon expedition board."

’Dungeon Expedition Board.’ The young dragon couldn’t take his eyes off the enormous bulletin board. Dozens of scrolls covered the entire wooden surface.

Some were written in black ink.

Others bore red seals.

And a few glowed with a faint bluish light.

Entire groups of adventurers were arguing in front of them.

Some seemed excited. Others walked away from the board, clearly frustrated.

Noir tilted his head slightly.

"Are all of those dungeons?"

"No."

Arlene walked slowly toward the board.

"The black ones are standard requests."

She pointed to the first section.

"Escorts."

Then another.

"Monster hunts."

A third one.

"Gathering."

Finally, she pointed to the scrolls marked with blue seals.

"And those..."

"...are expeditions."

Noir felt his curiosity spike immediately.

"What’s the difference?"

"Most missions have a known objective."

Arlene scanned several scrolls.

"Expeditions don’t."

"A lot of the time, no one knows exactly what they’ll find inside."

Noir smiled.

"That sounds a lot more interesting."

The half-human finally stopped in front of one of the scrolls. It wasn’t the most eye-catching one. In fact... it looked quite plain.

Its blue seal barely glowed.

Arlene began to read aloud.

"Reconnaissance expedition. Destination... Northern Dungeon. Objective: Update the map of the first three levels and record any changes in the creature population."

Noir tilted his head slightly.

"Do the maps change?"

"Yes. The dungeons are alive—they evolve and change. Sometimes new rooms appear, and other times they disappear."

The young dragon’s eyes widened slightly.

’I’m liking this more and more.’

Arlene continued reading.

"Reward... Four gold coins per participant."

Noir, of course, completely ignored the reward. He had heard only one word.

Dungeon.

"I want to go in."

His response was so immediate that Arlene let out a small, weary sigh.

"I figured as much."

She tore the scroll off the bulletin board.

Several adventurers turned their heads when they saw her do that.

One of them shook his head resignedly.

"They beat us."

Another snorted.

"We’ll have to find another one."

Arlene completely ignored the comments.

"First, we have to search it."

They walked over to a counter. A woman with gray hair took the scroll, quickly scanned its contents, and then looked up.

"How many members?"

"Three."

The woman picked up a small quill. She stamped the document with a metal seal.

"Registration complete."

"Access to the dungeon authorized. Once you arrive, show this to the dungeon guards."

"Good luck."

Arlene took the scroll back.

"Thank you."

As soon as they left the counter, Noir asked again.

"When do we leave?"

The answer came immediately.

"Now."

The young dragon smiled.

"Excellent."

It didn’t take them long to leave Greenhollow. The enormous living gate slowly receded into the distance as the road wound its way back into the forests surrounding the city.

This time, the landscape was different.

There were no merchants.

Nor were there any farmers.

Most people traveling along that path wore armor, carried backpacks, and wielded weapons.

Noir watched as several groups passed them by.

A party of five adventurers walked in complete silence. Further ahead, another group kept consulting a map as they debated which route to take.

"Arlene was right."

Everyone seemed to be getting ready for an expedition.

After nearly two hours of travel... The forest began to change. The trees grew taller, and the leaves took on a slight silvery hue; even the air itself seemed heavier.

Noir noticed it immediately.

"There’s a lot of mana here."

Arlene nodded.

"It always happens near a dungeon."

The young dragon slowly looked up.

Among the trees... he began to make out a massive stone structure, covered in gigantic roots.

It looked like an ancient building swallowed by the forest centuries ago. Just a gigantic, dark entrance—like the gaping mouth of a monster waiting to devour anyone who crossed its threshold.

Noir stood motionless, and a smile slowly spread across his face.

"So... This is a dungeon."
