Chapter 134: Chapter 132: Quite the Actor
"You didn’t notice a driver was missing, Mr. Jiang?"
Jiang Yaozu froze for a moment.
When his father didn’t answer, Jiang Junrui watched him, his expression unchanged.
’So this is the man you repeatedly assured me would never betray the Jiang family,’ he thought. ’And here he is, spouting a story full of holes.’
After a moment’s pause, Jiang Yaozu frowned, recalling the events of that year. "I don’t remember being short a driver back then."
Su Miaoyi and Zhuang Yanzheng both watched him.
"I don’t recall this matter at all. The only one was that fellow Zheng Hui, who was in a car accident. No one else was missing." Jiang Yaozu turned to Jiang Junrui. "Do you know anything about this? I’m old now, I can’t remember many things clearly."
Jiang Junrui was silent for a moment before shaking his head. "I never heard about anyone who worked for you going missing, Father."
"Then why would Zheng Hui say that?" Jiang Yaozu asked. "If one of my staff had gone missing, how could I not have looked for him? Even if I’d assumed he quit unexpectedly and didn’t search for him, his family certainly would have."
Jiang Junrui nodded.
Jiang Yaozu continued, "Back then, the Jiangcheng City Bureau confirmed Zheng Hui’s death. What I mean is, is this person they have now really Zheng Hui?"
Zhuang Yanzheng neither confirmed nor denied it.
Jiang Yaozu then asked, "May I ask what crimes this Zheng Hui has committed? Is it related to our family?"
"Zheng Hui claims to have been your driver, and he’s involved in a case of faked death, so we came to ask a few questions," Zhuang Yanzheng said.
"Ah," said Jiang Yaozu. "We always thought it was Zheng Hui who died. As for the rest... I’m afraid we can’t be of much help."
Zhuang Yanzheng nodded. "Mr. Jiang, do you know a Mr. Lu Zhenheng from Jiangcheng?"
Jiang Yaozu paused again. "The son-in-law of the Yu Family in Jiangcheng?"
"Yes."
"Of course, I knew him." Jiang Yaozu sighed. "He was about ten years younger than me, but he was an incredibly capable man. I genuinely admired him. If it weren’t for... well, the Jiang family wouldn’t be where it is today in Jiangcheng."
"Such a fine man. I have no idea why he suddenly lost hope and jumped to his death." Jiang Yaozu sighed again.
Jiang Junrui glanced at his father, then turned to Zhuang Yanzheng. "Does this have something to do with Zheng Hui?"
"Zheng Hui has confessed. He was behind the Lu Family case back then. He’s the one who killed Lu Zhenheng and Yu Jin," said Zhuang Yanzheng.
"What?" Jiang Yaozu exclaimed in surprise.
Jiang Junrui was also stunned.
"Not a suicide? A murder?" Jiang Yaozu’s surprise turned to anger. "Officer, you must investigate this thoroughly and get justice for the Lu couple!"
"We will," Zhuang Yanzheng replied.
...
After Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi left, Jiang Junrui saw them to the door.
When he returned to the living room, he looked at Jiang Yaozu.
Jiang Yaozu said, "If you’re unsure about something, just say you don’t know. They’ll go back and question Zheng Hui again."
Jiang Junrui said nothing.
"No matter what nonsense Zheng Hui spouts, even if he invents a hundred other drivers, he won’t name the Jiang family," said Jiang Yaozu. "As long as he doesn’t name us, what can they do? Even if they suspect us."
"This isn’t the first time our family has been under suspicion. How many times did that Kang Ting investigate us? He still came up with nothing, didn’t he?" Jiang Yaozu continued. "You young people are just too cautious, always second-guessing everything. Given our family’s position now, we’re not someone people can just take down on a whim."
Jiang Junrui slowly exhaled. He remained silent and sat down on the sofa.
Jiang Yaozu glanced at him and asked, "Why was that Su Miaoyi here? What’s her angle?"
"What do you think?" Jiang Junrui’s voice was laced with exhaustion. "The woman you tried to kill shows up at your front door with the police. She’s holding evidence that could destroy you, and she’s openly declared she wants Fengjiang Group. What do you think she’s here for?"
Jiang Yaozu’s face paled with anger. "A mere slip of a girl, threatening me to my face."
Su Miaoyi accompanying the police was an undeniable threat to the Jiang family—an even more aggressive one at that.
She couldn’t be killed, and she held something important. It was as if she were saying, ’If you don’t make a decision that satisfies me, this evidence in my hand could land with the police at any moment.’
"But... in a way, this makes us safer. The fact that she’s still threatening us means she won’t hand the evidence over just yet," said Jiang Yaozu. "Whatever plan you have, execute it quickly. Don’t procrastinate."
Jiang Junrui nodded.
...
Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi left the Jiang residence.
Once in the car, Su Miaoyi couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "He’s such a good actor. It’s a huge loss for the entertainment industry that he never pursued it."
"If people like him were easy to deal with, Captain Kang wouldn’t have spent years investigating them and come up with nothing," Zhuang Yanzheng said. "He even got led around by the nose."
"So, what’s next?" Su Miaoyi asked, looking at Zhuang Yanzheng.
Zhuang Yanzheng thought for a moment. "We’ll go back and continue interrogating Zheng Hui."
"Without concrete evidence, even if Zheng Hui names the Jiang family, it’ll be difficult to make anything stick," Su Miaoyi said, worried.
Without powerful evidence, the Jiang family could simply claim Zheng Hui was framing them, and it would be his word against theirs.
But there was no traceable connection between Zheng Hui and the Jiang family. No phone contact, no bank transactions.
"We might get something out of him," Zhuang Yanzheng said.
Su Miaoyi nodded. "As for me, I’ll just have to wait for Jiang Junrui’s next move. He should contact me on his own."
"Right," said Zhuang Yanzheng. "Whatever happens, your safety comes first."
"Got it."
...
「After working through the night and into the next morning」
Su Miaoyi decided to grab lunch in the cafeteria before heading home to catch up on sleep.
Once inside the cafeteria, she made a beeline for the sweet and sour pork ribs.
"Eat noodles," the voice in her head said suddenly.
Su Miaoyi snorted. "Do I look like noodles to you?"
"Are you going to eat them or not?" the voice in her head asked, its tone ice-cold.
"I’m not. What are you going to do about it?" Su Miaoyi challenged.
’She had already listened to it and eaten noodles for several days straight. Today, she absolutely had to have something different.’
"Are you going to eat them or not?" the voice in her head repeated.
Su Miaoyi let out a cold laugh. "You can’t even control what I eat. What else could you possibly do? Stop trying to scare me with that tone."
The voice in her head gave an even colder laugh.
Then, suddenly, Su Miaoyi’s left leg tangled with her right, and she staggered violently forward a couple of meters, only steadying herself by grabbing a handful of the person’s clothes next to her.
Yan Cheng had watched her stumble toward him and reached out to steady her as well.
Su Miaoyi looked up and saw it was Yan Cheng. She patted her chest. "That scared the life out of me."
"What are you doing?" Zhuang Yanzheng, who had witnessed the whole thing, walked over. "Trying to launch yourself across the cafeteria?"
Su Miaoyi: "..."
In the end, worried she might "launch" herself again, Su Miaoyi went and got the noodles...
