I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 71 - 69: Case Investigation

Chapter 71: Chapter 69: Case Investigation

"Can I see the body?" Su Miaoyi asked.

Kang Ting thought for a moment, then nodded.

The restraints on the interrogation chair were released, and they left the room.

Su Miaoyi then said, "Can I see my brother first?"

Kang Ting looked at her.

"You can confiscate his communication devices, too," Su Miaoyi said.

Kang Ting took her to see Cheng Jue.

Upon seeing her, Cheng Jue’s tension eased. "Sis, are you okay? Why are you at the police station?"

"I sleepwalked to the crime scene by accident, so I need to cooperate with the investigation." Su Miaoyi patted his shoulder. "It’s nothing. Everything will be fine once the investigation is clear. You should stay at the station for now. Just let them know if you need anything."

Cheng Jue frowned. ’When did she start sleepwalking?’ he wanted to ask.

’It never happened when we lived at home.’

But since she’d said it, he was afraid of causing her trouble, so he didn’t ask.

"Don’t be scared," Su Miaoyi said.

"As long as you’re okay, I’m not scared," Cheng Jue said.

"Okay," Su Miaoyi said. "Just wait for me here."

"Alright," Cheng Jue replied. "Sis, you don’t be scared either. I’ll be right here."

"Mm."

...

Su Miaoyi followed Kang Ting and Song Yucheng to the Jiangcheng funeral home.

The Jiangcheng City Bureau, unlike the Jinghai City Bureau, didn’t have its own dedicated autopsy room.

All their autopsies had to be conducted at the funeral home.

On the way there, Su Miaoyi asked, "Has the victim’s drowning location been determined?"

"No," Kang Ting said from the passenger seat.

Song Yucheng was driving and glanced at her in the rearview mirror.

Su Miaoyi happened to be looking at the rearview mirror at the same time. Their eyes met, and Song Yucheng’s gaze was filled with contempt and disdain before he looked away.

Su Miaoyi ignored him. "Can you trace the origin of the chain and the Jade Token?"

Kang Ting said, "We’re looking into it."

"By the time you think to investigate something like that, the killer will be long gone," Song Yucheng suddenly chimed in.

Su Miaoyi looked at him. "The time of death was a month ago. If the killer wanted to run, they would’ve run long ago. We don’t need you making cynical remarks."

Song Yucheng was rendered speechless.

Su Miaoyi said no more and leaned back in her seat.

They arrived at the funeral home.

Su Miaoyi saw the body.

It had been buried for over a month, and the humidity here was high.

The degree of decomposition was already severe.

Su Miaoyi put on gloves, touched his sternum, and then his skull.

The scene before her eyes changed.

"Well, well, struck it rich? You can even afford the Fengjiang Clubhouse now."

A woman smiled at him and handed him a drink.

The room was opulently decorated.

There was a swimming pool off to the side.

It was just the two of them.

He took it and had a few sips. "What is this?"

"It’s a new drink they developed here. Tastes good, right?" the woman opposite him said.

He took a few more sips. It was sweet and sour. He then put the cup down. "Why did you ask me here? It’s been so many years. You can’t possibly still be thinking about her, can you?"

The woman smiled. "She chose you back then. Naturally, I respect her choice. What does it matter whether I still think about her or not?"

"Easy for you to say. You didn’t even come to my wedding. What have you been up to all these years? Doing so well for yourself that you can come to a place like this."

"Just some small-time business, following a boss of mine," the woman said.

"Introduce me sometime." After saying this, he felt his vision begin to distort.

Everything before his eyes became warped.

Gradually, he started to laugh. He felt happy, excited, and reached out to grab the distorted shapes in front of him.

But as he took a step forward, he felt his hands being seized.

He struggled but couldn’t break free.

He felt his hands and feet being bound.

Then he heard the woman speaking.

"She chose you back then, and I don’t blame her. She liked you, so I let you two be together. But you! How have you treated her all these years! You actually dared to hit her! How could you hit her! If you dare to touch her, you can go to hell!"

He felt his body being rolled along the ground, then a sense of weightlessness, followed by a SPLASH.

Then, water flooded his mouth and nose.

He wanted to struggle to the surface, but with his hands and feet bound, he couldn’t get up. His vision slowly faded to black.

...

"Su Miaoyi, Su Miaoyi, Su Miaoyi," Kang Ting was calling her name repeatedly.

Su Miaoyi snapped back to reality, pulling her hand away from the corpse. She stumbled back a few steps, steadying herself against the wall.

She quickly pulled off her gloves and pounded her chest twice.

The suffocating sensation of choking on water.

She had experienced the feeling of near-death once again.

She gasped for air.

"What’s wrong with you?" Seeing her condition, Kang Ting took out his phone, ready to dial 911.

Su Miaoyi waved her hand dismissively.

Kang Ting stopped.

Su Miaoyi caught her breath. "I’m fine, I’m fine. Seeing the body just startled me a bit."

"And you claim to have helped solve so many cases?" Song Yucheng said from the side. "How are you supposed to solve a case when you get this spooked by a corpse?"

"You talk like you’re so great, but you don’t have any leads either, do you?" Su Miaoyi retorted.

Song Yucheng was once again silenced by her comeback.

"Are you really okay?" Kang Ting was also beginning to doubt her abilities.

"I’m fine." Su Miaoyi looked at Kang Ting and said after a moment, "I’d like to talk to you alone."

Kang Ting didn’t speak.

’Director Meng from the Jinghai City Bureau did say it would be best to discuss the case with her privately. He hadn’t even brought it up, but she requested it herself.’

Song Yucheng said, "Captain Kang, she hasn’t been cleared of suspicion. Be careful."

"You can handcuff me," Su Miaoyi said.

"Alright." Kang Ting led her to an empty room and closed the door.

Su Miaoyi asked, "Do you have a sketch artist here?"

Kang Ting suddenly frowned.

Su Miaoyi didn’t understand his sudden change in expression.

’It’s an expression of pure fury. And it seems to be directed at me.’

Su Miaoyi was confused.

’If you have one, you have one. If you don’t, you don’t. What’s there to be angry about?’

"We could have had one, but some people pestered and poached him away," Kang Ting said.

Su Miaoyi realized what he meant and pursed her lips.

’Lu Zhishen was from Jiangcheng.’

"You’re not talking about Lu Zhishen, are you?" Su Miaoyi asked.

Kang Ting snorted coldly.

Su Miaoyi cleared her throat lightly.

’I had a feeling he held a grudge against Jinghai. So that’s why.’

Su Miaoyi thought for a moment and asked, "When Director Meng recommended me to you, did he say anything specific?"

’Zhuang Yanzheng said Director Meng knows about my ability. Since Director Meng recommended me, he should have given Kang Ting a heads-up. That also means he’s someone I can communicate with, someone I can tell things to.’

Kang Ting stared at her, then paused before saying, "You people from Jinghai are really something else. One of you specifically told me to believe you, no matter how outrageous the things you say. And now another one is asking if I was told anything specific. What is it? Did you commune with the dead?"

Su Miaoyi didn’t answer.

Kang Ting was taken aback.

Su Miaoyi said bluntly, "The victim was murdered in the swimming pool at the Fengjiang Clubhouse. The killer put drugs in his drink and had him drink it. While the victim was hallucinating, the killer bound his hands and feet and threw him into the pool. The killer and the victim both used to like the same woman, who is likely the victim’s wife. The victim had a history of domestic violence against his wife."
