Chapter 260: Chapter 141: Cut in Half (Grande)
The February spring wind cuts like a pair of shears.
Amidst the biting cold wind, an event began to brew rapidly throughout the South China F4—Lingnan, Min Nan, Guangxi Province, and Qiongzhou.
Starting February 5th.
The prices of fish feed, shrimp and crab feed, pig feed, and chicken and duck feed in the South China Region experienced a slight drop.
This was the first time domestic feed market prices had fallen since the beginning of 2025.
Among them, eel fattening feed dropped by 15%, juvenile shrimp and crab feed by 12%, adult shrimp and crab feed by 9%, piglet and chick feed by 3%, and sow and laying hen feed by 1.5%.
Other high-protein fish feeds also saw price drops of 10% to 15%.
And the main force behind this drop in feed market prices was the Haida Group.
After signing a cooperation agreement with Hailufeng Company, they had acted quickly, stocking 60,000 mu with Egyptian Catfish last November. Thereafter, they added another 20,000 to 30,000 mu each month.
As the first batch of Egyptian Catfish reached harvesting standards this February, the Haida Group immediately started up its fish meal and fish oil production lines.
In just five days, the Haida Group produced 50,000 tons of fish meal and 16,500 tons of fish oil.
This fish meal and fish oil were used in the production of various feeds, causing costs to drop to varying degrees.
For example, the cost of eel fattening feed with 60% crude protein content dropped from 13,000 yuan per ton to around 7,000 yuan per ton.
This was why the Haida Group dared to slash the wholesale price by 15% all at once. Currently, the Haida Group’s wholesale price for eel fattening feed had been reduced from 13,600 yuan per ton to 11,500 yuan per ton, a decrease of 2,100 yuan.
Yangcheng, Nansha District.
As commercial farmers located near the Haida Group headquarters, they were the first to reap the benefits, getting their hands on the newly released, low-priced feed right away.
The Haida Group’s feed wholesale outlet was unexpectedly crowded and bustling, a rare sight.
A middle-aged man in a down jacket, a cigarette dangling from his mouth, shouted, "Da Zhang, get me 20 tons of the new eel feed."
"Old Mo, didn’t you just buy feed a few days ago?" the manager, Da Zhang, asked as he walked over with a small notebook.
Hearing this, Old Mo’s face clouded with frustration. "Hey! That’s not cool of you guys! Can I return the feed I bought a few days ago?"
"Don’t even think about it. I didn’t know about the head office’s decision either!" Da Zhang shrugged, indicating his hands were tied. "Do you want the new feed or not?"
"Yes, of course I want it." Old Mo was just blowing off steam; he knew perfectly well how high the market price for feed was right now.
Last year, not only did the prices of fish meal and fish oil skyrocket, but the prices of soybean meal and corn had also risen significantly. This had forced all major domestic feed producers to raise their wholesale prices in unison.
"Twenty tons... Nansha... Old Mo... address... phone number... all right, it’ll be delivered this afternoon." As he wrote, Da Zhang suddenly remembered something. He pulled a small booklet from the counter and handed it to Old Mo.
"Old Mo, take this instruction booklet. This new feed uses a new formula. The eel farming cycle is the same as with Hailufeng Company’s feed, you know that, right?"
"No kidding, of course I know." Old Mo took the booklet, then asked, "But your prices are so low. Isn’t Hailufeng Company going to give you trouble?"
Da Zhang reminded him again, "Our companies are partners. Besides, for the later stage, you’ll need to buy Hailufeng Company’s feed to remove the muddy taste."
"What? Their feed is ridiculously expensive! Why don’t you guys make it? And it’s so hard to get! Those guys from Chaoshan and Fulao have bought up all of Hailufeng Company’s eel feed," Old Mo complained.
Da Zhang shook his head with a smile. "What do you think? Don’t worry. This time, Hailufeng Company isn’t making the regular fattening feed. Their production capacity for the other feed will be enough for all the eel farms in the country."
This market segmentation was a tacit understanding between the Haida Group and Hailufeng Company.
The Haida Group was in no position to refuse Hailufeng Company’s demands. After all, being granted the fattening feed market was already a huge favor.
Hailufeng Company was bound to occupy the high-end segment of the feed industry to maintain its high profit margins.
These types of products, which don’t require high production volume but yield high profits, are not only extremely lucrative but also less susceptible to sudden market shifts.
For instance, the price of eel fattening feed had dropped to 11,500 yuan per ton, but the price of the taste-finishing feed remained as high as 17,000 yuan per ton, even though their production costs were roughly the same.
Old Mo was only thinking from a farmer’s perspective. Naturally, he wanted feed prices to be as low as possible.
Unfortunately for him, Hailufeng Company was profiting from its technological edge.
’If we can monopolize the market, why should we cut prices?’
Old Mo was about to start grumbling again.
But Da Zhang had already turned to help another customer.
"Sir! What kind of feed are you looking for?"
The middle-aged man in a leather jacket asked with a furrowed brow, "Will your new feed increase the muddy taste?"
Da Zhang explained with a chuckle, "Don’t worry! As long as you stop using it for two months before harvesting, it’s basically guaranteed not to add any noticeable muddy taste."
"For real?" The man in the leather jacket was still skeptical.
"Why would a company as big as ours dare to do something that would ruin our own reputation?"
The man in the leather jacket scratched his head. "Do I have to stop using the chicken feed too? My yellow-feathered chickens are only raised for a little over fifty days!"
"You should have just said you were raising chickens," Da Zhang said, shaking his head with a wry smile. "In that case, the Yellow-Feathered Chick Feed No. 3 and the Adult Chicken Feed No. 4 are cheaper than before—100 yuan less per ton. You can feed them normally."
