Chapter 278: Chapter 147: Returning Home (Part 2)
New Year’s Eve was approaching.
The vast majority of migrant workers returning from the Pearl River Delta Region had made it back to their respective hometowns.
「Xinxiang.」
The sisters Jiang Xin and Jiang Ting, who had just returned from Peng City by bus, got off on the side of the road by the East Field Staff District construction site, pulling their suitcases behind them.
The site had already shut down for the Spring Festival holiday.
However, the apartment buildings in the staff district had grown from two stories a month ago to five. With the planned height being nine stories, only four more floors remained. If everything went smoothly, the buildings would be topped out by the end of March.
"When did they start building this complex?" Jiang Xin asked, pulling her suitcase as she eyed the construction site.
Walking made static electricity build up in Jiang Ting’s clothes, making her skin itch. She quickly unzipped her down jacket to let in some cold air. "It wasn’t here when I came back for the Mid-Autumn Festival last year. They must have started in the last few months!"
BEEP BEEP BEEP...
Jiang Xin pulled her suitcase closer to her sister and looked behind them.
"Well, if it isn’t Xin! Back for the New Year, huh?" A young man on an e-scooter saw the two sisters and slowed down. "Give me your suitcases. I’ll take them back for you."
Jiang Ting smiled and lifted her suitcase onto the back seat of the e-scooter. "Brother Da Niu, where are you headed?"
"Thanks, Da Niu." Jiang Xin didn’t stand on ceremony, stuffing her suitcase onto the scooter’s front floorboard.
"So, you two pretty ladies still selling clothes in Peng City?" Da Niu asked with a grin as he drove off slowly.
"Yep!"
"The clothing business is tough these days. Even selling online is hard; there are just too many returns," Jiang Xin said with a helpless look. "What about you? Still driving a dump truck?"
"Yeah. I drove for more than half of last year, hauling dirt for Ah Miao’s farm."
Jiang Xin complained half-jokingly, "That guy Ah Miao got married and didn’t even invite his old classmates to the wedding banquet. Was he afraid we couldn’t afford to give him gift money?"
"It wasn’t convenient for him to throw a big celebration. If he had, thousands of people from Magong might have shown up, not to mention people from the city. It would have been too many. So he decided not to invite anyone except his own family," Da Niu said, understanding Jiang Miao’s concerns.
"He’s a big boss now. He probably looks down on us small fries," Jiang Xin said, shaking her head with a laugh.
"Heh heh..." Da Niu just chuckled and said nothing.
’He wouldn’t answer a question like that casually. If it got back to Jiang Miao, even if Jiang Miao himself didn’t care, it didn’t mean his subordinates or Jiang Dahuo, who had a contract with him, wouldn’t hold a grudge.’
Jiang Ting applied some lip balm, then pointed to the construction site by the road and asked, "Brother Da Niu, when did they start building this complex?"
"After the Mid-Autumn Festival last year."
"Will they even be able to sell these apartments?" Jiang Xin asked doubtfully.
"This isn’t a regular residential complex. It’s the Hailufeng Company’s staff district, built for their own employees."
"He’s giving his employees apartments? Is Ah Miao really that rich?" Jiang Xin asked, astonished.
"They still have to pay, but it’s really cheap. I heard the internal company price is 5,000 yuan per square meter, or 6,500 if you want it renovated. Plus, their employees have a housing fund, and the listed square footage is all usable space," Da Niu explained with a touch of envy.
"It’s that good?" Jiang Ting’s eyes went wide.
"Ah Miao’s company has money. It’s basically a huge employee benefit." Seeing they were almost at the village, Da Niu said, "I’ll drop the suitcases off at your house first."
"Thanks for the trouble," Jiang Xin said with a smile, waving her phone. "Let’s get dim sum together after the New Year."
"I’ll hold you to that," Da Niu said, then sped up, his e-scooter quickly vanishing into a side alley.
Watching Da Niu’s retreating figure, the two sisters didn’t hurry home. Instead, they took in the sight of their village, which now felt somewhat unfamiliar.
Many of the houses had been renovated.
There were several newly built ones, too.
Groups of children chased each other through the streets and alleys, armed with firecrackers, toy guns, and toy swords.
Every house was cleaned to a shine, with bright red Spring Festival couplets pasted on the main doors. Here and there, you could see kumquat trees and scarlet chrysanthemums placed by the entrances.
They passed by the entrance to Jiang Miao’s old family home.
The two of them noticed the main gate was open.
Huang Qiuyue was inside preparing offerings for the ancestor worship ceremony, with a female bodyguard and a female driver helping her.
"Oh? Isn’t this Xin and Ting! Happy New Year!" Huang Qiuyue put down the ingot-shaped candles she was holding and pulled two red envelopes from her pocket. "Here, one for each of you. Have you found boyfriends yet?"
"Aunt Yue, you don’t have to..." Jiang Xin accepted the red envelope while feigning reluctance.
"Thank you, Aunt Yue! Happy New Year! May all your wishes come true!" Jiang Ting accepted hers with a wide grin.
Beaming, Huang Qiuyue took Jiang Xin’s hand. "If you haven’t found boyfriends, your auntie here can introduce you to some. We have lots of young men at our company."
"No, no, that’s okay..." Jiang Xin felt a bit overwhelmed.
In contrast, the more straightforward Jiang Ting spoke up directly, "Aunt Yue, I don’t have a boyfriend. Go on and introduce me to someone!"
"Of course! Ting..." Huang Qiuyue took Jiang Ting’s hand next and launched into her plan. "When are you free after the New Year? I’ll set you up with a few of them. Add me on WeChat first. I’ll find some time in the next few days to send you profiles for a few young men. If you see one you like, I’ll help you set up a meeting, and you two can have a meal together."
"I just added you, Aunt Yue. Can you accept the request?"
"Done."
A little while later, the two sisters finally left Jiang Miao’s old family home.
After walking down an alley, Jiang Ting contentedly opened her red envelope. When she saw the bright red banknote inside, the corners of her mouth curled up involuntarily. "A hundred!"
