Chapter 233: Eliminating Spandam

Amon watched Spandam's excitement with quiet contempt. The man had no idea what was about to happen to him, and was already busy calculating how to use Robin as a tool. It would have been almost funny if it weren't so predictable.

The old Robin might have struggled against him. Spandam was a Devil Fruit user, and that counted for something. But Robin wasn't the same person she'd been before she boarded the Amon's ship. A Robin with Armament Haki was an entirely different problem, and Spandam was nowhere near the level required to handle it.

"Robin." Amon kept his voice easy. "He's yours. Whatever happens, I've got you covered."

Robin went still for just a moment. The words landed deeper than she'd expected. She'd spent years sailing with people who would hand her over to the Marines at the first sign of trouble, people who called her a partner right up until it cost them something. Nobody had ever said it quite like that. Just that simply. Whatever happens, I've got you.

She wiped her eyes and turned to face Spandam.

He was there at Ohara. He'd been young then, barely a lieutenant, standing at his father's side while the Buster Call burned everything. Now he ran CP5. Twenty years of climbing, and still the same person underneath.

"Robin," Spandam said, his voice oily with threat. "Be smart about this. Come quietly, and maybe we can discuss what comes next. Otherwise..." He let the rest trail off with a smile that said he'd already decided.

"Die."

Robin didn't give him the courtesy of a longer response. Her hands moved and dozens of arms bloomed outward, reaching for him from every angle.

Spandam's expression curdled. His hand snapped to the blade at his side, a long white weapon that had eaten the Elephant-Elephant Fruit, swelling to enormous proportions at his will.

"Pathetic. Elephant Sword!"

He swung hard at the incoming arms, aiming to sever them at the root.

"Cien Fleur. Armament."

The arms turned black.

The blade hit with a metallic ring and bounced. Spandam's whole arm shuddered from the impact, and he stood there gripping his numbed wrist with an expression Amon found deeply satisfying.

"How do you have Armament Haki?!"

He didn't wait for an answer. One look at Robin's face and the math was obvious. He turned and ran, making straight for the courthouse. Marines inside, judicial officers from Enies Lobby, numbers and backup. If he could just reach the doors.

"Running?"

Robin's voice was flat. An enormous hand materialized directly in Spandam's path.

"Cien Fleur. Slap."

The palm connected with a crack that echoed off the surrounding buildings. Spandam left the ground and came back down hard, coughing blood before he'd even stopped rolling.

"Help! Help me!"

He scrambled upright and kept running, screaming at the top of his lungs. The sound carried easily through the courthouse walls, and within moments Marines were pouring out with weapons raised.

"Spandam-sama is under attack!"

"Who dares assault a government official!"

Bang bang bang.

Robin's expression didn't change. Her hands moved in a single practiced motion, and arms erupted from the necks of the Marines in a ring. One twist, and they crumpled.

She stepped over them and continued toward Spandam.

Another slap. Spandam went airborne again and came down worse than before, both legs snapping on impact. He lay in the dirt, trying to drag himself forward with his arms, and failing.

Robin walked toward him without hurrying.

Whatever confidence Spandam had arrived with had completely abandoned him. He curled inward, his face drained of color, watching her approach with the wide eyes of someone who had spent his whole career inflicting fear on other people and had never once considered what it felt like from the other side.

"How dare you!"

A white shape came flying out of the courthouse. One of Enies Lobby's specialists, sent in response to the commotion.

Spandam's face lit up with desperate relief. "Butes! Kill her! Kill this wretched woman!"

The man landed and looked at Robin with assessment.. "So you're Robin. The Demon of Ohara."

"Annoying."

Amon's palm connected with the side of his head before he finished the sentence. Butes hit the ground and didn't move again.

"Robin." Amon glanced back at her as more Marines continued to stream out of the courthouse. "Keep going with Spandam. I'll handle the rest."

He hadn't stretched properly in a while. This was a reasonable opportunity.

Robin nodded once, turned back to Spandam, and kept walking.

Amon faced the oncoming crowd. He let his Conqueror's Haki out, not a full release, just enough. The effect was immediate. The front line of Marines stopped mid-stride, hands going to their throats as the air seemed to thicken around them. Several of the weaker ones were already swaying.

He pushed it a fraction harder.

They went down like cut grass, the whole group folding inward and going still before most of them had processed what was happening.

Spandam's last functioning allies lay scattered across the ground.

He stared up at Robin from the dirt, shaking so badly he could barely hold himself up. All of the performance was gone. The titles, the sneering, the borrowed authority of his father's name. None of it had done a thing.

"Don't... you can't do this. I'm a government agent. You can't kill me! My father leads CP9. If you touch me, neither of you will ever walk free again!"

The mention of his father was the wrong thing to say.

Robin's expression didn't shift into rage. It went somewhere quieter and more final than that. Her hands moved.

The sound Spandam made as his body gave way beneath the force of her ability was not a dignified one.

"You... you'll pay for this, you wretched woman. You'll die badly, I swear it..."

Spandam spent his final breath cursing Robin's name. She didn't let him finish.

The Marines who had been pushing toward them were already down, put to sleep by Amon without any particular effort or animosity. He had no quarrel with them. They were just doing their jobs, and knocking someone unconscious was a different matter from anything worse.
