Chapter 573: Chapter 368: Flames Light Up the Sky, One Wave Follows Another

"What?" Everyone present froze for a moment at the shout, then looked in the direction the Red Blood Gang member was pointing.

"Shit."

"Fuck me."

"Damn it."

"Son of a..."

Fang Jingtang had always considered himself a scholar, one who shouldn’t swear like the crude, uneducated members of the Red Blood Gang.

But when he saw a fire break out on the north side of the headquarters, he couldn’t help but curse out loud, just like the other members.

The fire on the north side of the headquarters spread rapidly, merging with the inferno to the west. The blaze instantly grew immense, far beyond what they could possibly control.

"Gang Leader, the fire on the north side is very suspicious. At first, it was just a small flicker, but in no time, a huge area was burning. Someone must have set it," said the Red Blood Gang member who first spotted it.

"Bastard..." Fang Jingtang cursed, his face ashen. He then addressed the crowd, "The workers will stay here and continue to control the fire. Everyone else, follow me north to catch the arsonist."

"Yes, sir!" The members of the Red Blood Gang replied through gritted teeth, then followed the grim-faced Fang Jingtang as they rushed north.

After all the Red Blood Gang members had left, a young man among the porters fighting the fire shouted out.

"Alright, everyone! Stop fighting the fire so desperately! The blaze is huge now. Let’s not get ourselves killed!"

Hearing the young man’s shout, the porters’ firefighting efforts faltered. They weren’t fools; a moment’s thought was all it took to realize the young man was right.

The Red Blood Gang’s Gang Leader had promised everyone a month’s wages if they did their best to extinguish the fire, but that was all contingent on not dying in the process.

Besides, all the Red Blood Gang members had left to catch the so-called arsonist. With no one watching, they could just go through the motions. No one would ever know.

Because of the young man’s words, the porters immediately changed their attitude. They abandoned their frantic efforts and began to carry water to the fire at a sluggish pace.

"Hey, nice one! With just a few words, you got everyone to stop giving it their all," the young man’s friend whispered.

"It’s because what I said makes sense! The fire on the north side has merged with the one on the west. Even if we gave it our all, hauling water would be useless at this point."

"And with a fire this big, charging forward to fight it with all our might could very well get us killed... A month’s wages is tempting, but we have to be alive to collect it!" the young man replied.

"That’s true. But you must have had other reasons for shouting out like that, right?" his friend whispered.

"Heh heh..." The young man nodded and whispered back.

"Earlier, those Red Blood Gang guys wouldn’t let us eat dinner until we finished all our work. My stomach is growling like crazy right now."

"This fire burning down their headquarters is just what they deserve. I hope it burns even bigger."

"To be honest, I was thinking the same thing. I can’t bring myself to hate the person who set the Red Blood Gang’s headquarters on fire at all," his friend whispered with a laugh.

Just as the two were gloating over the gang’s misfortune, an older porter shouted at them.

"Hey! What are you two whispering about over there? Get away from the fire, now!"

"Can’t you see the flames are spreading outward? If you get burned, you’ll be sorry..."
