The heavy iron doors of the Ruined Shrine groaned open, echoing loudly in the massive, hollow cavern.

Arthur stepped through the threshold, his hand instinctively pressing against his side. Even with Chloe’s rapid healing, his ribs still ached with a deep, dull throb from the Stalker’s vine whip. The muscle was bruised, and drawing a deep breath sent a sharp spike of pain up his chest.

Chloe hovered immediately at his elbow, her hands glowing with a faint, anxious white light.

"I’m fine, Chloe," Arthur murmured, waving her off. "Conserve your mana. You’re going to need it."

A few feet away, Alicia adjusted her grip on her sword, her green eyes flicking toward Arthur. She noticed how he favored his left side and kept his right arm slightly tucked. She didn’t say anything, but the professional acknowledgment was there. He was injured, but he was still standing.

They looked out into the Ruined Shrine.

It was a massive, circular arena of cracked stone pillars and ancient, crumbling altars. Arthur had planned to arrive an hour early to wire the chokepoints with explosive crystal charges from the caverns.

He didn’t get the chance.

Because the difficulty scaling had triggered, the boss was already awake.

In the center of the arena stood the Rust-Iron Shrine Guardian. It was a terrifying, brilliant piece of academy engineering—a massive, fifteen-foot-tall golem built from heavy iron plates, bound together by thick, animated vines that acted like muscle ligaments. Its chest housed a massive, glowing blue crystal core.

Arthur noticed a tiny, blackened patch of dead moss near the construct’s left knee joint—a subtle hint of rot—but he ignored it. It wasn’t a demon. It was an exam objective, and it was currently pulling a massive, rusted executioner’s blade from the stone floor.

The Guardian’s optic slit flared a violent, angry red.

"So much for setting traps," Arthur muttered.

"We don’t need traps," Leon said, his sword igniting with a brilliant, blinding aura of holy light. "Squad One, vanguard formation! Draw its aggro!"

Leon didn’t hesitate. He charged straight down the center of the arena, looking like a storybook hero. Cedric followed closely, raising his massive kite shield to cover Leon’s flank.

The Guardian swung its heavy executioner’s blade in a massive horizontal arc.

Cedric braced, slamming his boots into the cracked stone. The blade hit his shield with a deafening CLANG that sent sparks showering across the arena. Cedric grunted, his boots sliding back three feet, but he held the block perfectly.

"Now!" Leon shouted.

Alicia darted around Cedric’s right side, her longsword flashing as she cleanly severed two of the thick vines binding the Guardian’s wrist. Elara followed up instantly from the rear, firing three precision frost arrows that froze the Guardian’s knee joints, locking it in place.

Leon vaulted off a broken pillar, bringing his glowing sword down in a devastating Holy Strike directly against the Guardian’s chest plate.

The blast of holy mana was blinding. Emily cheered from the backline.

But as the light faded, the Guardian was still standing. The blue crystal core in its chest rapidly shifted color, pulsing with a deep, golden hue. The iron plates around its chest actively rearranged themselves, locking tightly over the blast zone.

Leon landed, swinging again, but his holy blade deflected off the armor with a dull, ineffective thud.

The Guardian raised its boot and unleashed a massive stomp. A shockwave of raw force ripped through the stone floor, knocking Leon and Alicia backward and shattering Elara’s ice.

"It’s adaptive," Arthur called out, watching the core shift. "It rotates its resistance based on the last heavy damage source! It’s heavily resisting holy magic right now."

Leon scrambled to his feet, deflecting a secondary strike. "Then how do we crack it?"

"We make it dizzy," Arthur said, fighting through the ache in his ribs as he drew his steel daggers. "Squad Seven, engage! We’re mixing the rotation."

Arthur sprinted forward, diving under a sweeping strike that Cedric deflected.

"Leon, hit it again!" Arthur yelled. "Bait the holy resistance!"

Leon drove a burst of light into the Guardian’s knee. Instantly, the golden aura flared up the golem’s leg, pulling its defensive plating downward.

"Emily, shatter its chest!"

Emily didn’t need to be told twice. She bypassed the vanguard entirely, lunging forward with a terrifying grin. She threw a devastating, mana-infused right hook directly into the Guardian’s exposed chest plate.

The iron buckled. The golem staggered backward, its core immediately flashing red as it shifted its defenses to physical resistance, reinforcing its chest.

"Alicia, cut the arm vines!" Arthur ordered.

Alicia flowed right behind Emily, her blade slicing cleanly through the exposed, unarmored vines on its right shoulder while its defenses were focused on its chest. The golem’s massive sword arm sagged uselessly.

"Elara, pin the core! Felix, Cedric, alternate shield pressure!"

When the Guardian’s broken sword arm swept toward the backline, Felix drove his Aegis Bulwark into the floor and caught the strike at an angle. The impact knocked him to one knee, but Chloe and Elara stayed untouched behind him.

The eight-man squad fell into a brutal, highly efficient rhythm. Leon baited. Emily shattered. Alicia cut. Elara pinned. Felix and Cedric created moving walls to protect the backline, while Chloe timed perfectly placed stamina pulses to keep them moving.

Arthur moved through the chaos like a ghost, exclusively targeting the tiny gaps in the shifting armor, driving his daggers into the optic sensors and joint mechanisms every time the Guardian tried to adapt.

The golem was falling apart, unable to calculate a defense against the perfectly alternating damage types.

Suddenly, the Guardian’s core turned completely white. A high-pitched, mechanical whine filled the arena.

"It’s enraging!" Elara yelled over the noise. "The core is exposed!"

The heavy iron plates on its chest retracted completely, revealing the massive, pulsing crystal. The boss was on its last sliver of health, preparing to detonate in a massive area-of-effect blast.

Instantly, the cooperative rhythm vanished. Both squads realized exactly what was happening.

The final blow was worth a massive point multiplier on the exam scoreboard.

"Squad One, secure the elimination!" Leon yelled, gripping his sword with both hands as it flared with a blinding, overwhelming holy aura. He charged straight for the exposed core.

"Not a chance!" Emily yelled, sprinting forward and pulling her fist back for a lethal punch.

Alicia darted in from the side, aiming a sweeping slash at the core. Elara knocked three arrows, aiming for the exact same spot.

Arthur wasn’t about to lose the kill. But with his bruised ribs, he couldn’t outrun Leon’s charge.

So, he improvised.

Arthur sprinted directly at Cedric, who was holding the center line.

"Vance, what are you—" Cedric started.

Arthur didn’t answer. He jumped, planting his heavy combat boot squarely on the rim of Cedric’s massive kite shield. He channeled a violent burst of mana into his legs, ignoring the sharp pain in his side, and cast Shadow Step.

He launched himself off Cedric like a cannonball, using the massive shadow cast by the Guardian’s raised blade as an anchor. A heartbeat later, he appeared directly above the exposed core.

"Vance, stop using me as furniture!" Cedric yelled in absolute outrage, stumbling forward from the heavy kick.

Arthur didn’t care. He plummeted toward the Guardian, raising both daggers in a reverse grip.

At the exact same millisecond, Leon closed the distance on the ground, thrusting his glowing broadsword directly into the center of the crystal.

Arthur’s daggers slammed down into the top of the core at the exact same moment Leon’s sword pierced the front.

The Ruined Shrine went entirely white.

A massive explosion of raw mana and rust blew outward, knocking everyone off their feet. Arthur hit the stone floor hard, rolling to a stop, groaning as his ribs flared in protest. Chloe was instantly at his side, casting a frantic healing pulse over his chest.

Chloe’s hands shook as she forced the healing pulse through the dungeon’s lingering dampening field.

As the dust settled, the Guardian was gone. Only a pile of shattered crystal and rusted iron remained.

High above the center of the arena, the glowing blue evaluation scoreboard materialized in the air.

Everyone stopped breathing, staring up at the text. The crystal flickered rapidly, the academy AI struggling to calculate the exact millisecond of the kill.

[Boss Elimination: Rust-Iron Guardian]

[Final Blow: Contested.]

[Calculating Contribution...]

Emily threw her hands up in the air in absolute frustration.

"No!" Emily yelled at the glowing crystal. "We killed it dirtier! That should count for something!"
