I Swear I'm Not a Demon Masquerading as a Human
Chapter 63: Lances Special Awakening MagicChapter 63: Lance's Special Awakening Magic
At that moment, the theater that was shrouded in the piercing, eerie sounds of demons had concluded its first class. The stage lights gradually dimmed, leaving behind only the trembling, dark melodies of the underworld, which settled over the auditorium like a heavy cloak of darkness.
Out in the corridor, the long, deep tolling of an ancient bell pierced the darkness deep within the hallways, signaling the start of the break. The sound possessed a mysterious magic. It bypassed solid stone walls, slipped through pitch-black corridors, and swept past the doors and windows of every classroom. Ultimately, it echoed throughout the boundless structure of the school.
Now, the demon students would enjoy their first thirty-minute break. They could use this time to find a classroom that better suited their preferences. Alternatively, taking advantage of the half-hour window when the classroom corridors connected to the functional zones, they could head there to spend any surplus credit coins and skip the next two-hour class.
After dragging Bakar out of the classroom, Hyperion dumped him onto the corridor's carpet. Meanwhile, Lance stretched his arms as if he had just stepped out of an opera house, looking like he was still savoring the experience.
Hyperion asked, "Where should we go next?"
Lance hesitated for a moment before asking, "Are you hungry?"
Hyperion replied, "A little."
Inexplicably, she felt like the two of them had just finished watching a concert together and were now discussing their plans for the rest of the outing.
Lance said with a grin, "Then let's grab some dinner first and come back to continue studying later."
He was genuinely happy. It was a stark contrast to his miserable, worse-than-death state back at Ikerite University during the day.
"Alright." Seeing Lance's vibrant energy, Hyperion couldn't help but think that if the professors from Ikerite University saw him now, they would be dumbstruck by his change in attitude. Although keeping Lance company at this demon academy could be a bit exhausting, having him as a teammate always gave her an incredible sense of reassurance.
Hyperion quickly shifted her attention to Bakar, who was still comatose and lying on the ground. "How is he supposed to guide us around now?"
After being taken out of that hellish theater, Bakar was no longer being jolted awake from being tormented by the musical performances. He looked like he had completely lost all energy to stay conscious. Since she was not well-versed in healing or awakening magic, Hyperion turned to Lance, who was likely more knowledgeable in such matters.
"Hyperion, did you know? There is a potent remedy that can both anesthetize a patient and rouse them to consciousness." Lance sighed with a smile, exuding the weary yet benevolent air of a seasoned healer. He gazed at her as if he was testing her knowledge.
Hyperion thought it over but couldn't figure out which remedy Lance was referring to. Besides, was it even possible to quickly find such a medicine within Purgatory Corridor Academy?
However, she followed Lance's gaze downward. She realized... he was staring at her fist. She stared back at him mutely. She had a feeling that if she kept engaging with Lance, she would lose all her previously accumulated merit and good deeds.
Lance said, "Come on, Hyperion, hurry up and use your magic to wake him up."
She could only nod. She didn't dare to utter a word of assent, fearing the Goddess might overhear. The two of them then set about treating Bakar, much like an attending physician and a nurse. Finally, amid his anguished screams, Bakar regained consciousness.

"I have to say, your vitality is truly remarkable." Lance remarked with delight as he gazed at the now awake Bakar, looking for all the world like a benevolent figure celebrating the sanctity of life.
Bakar felt a splitting headache, as if a fragment of his memory had been lost. "H-how... how did you wake me up?"
Even now he felt as if his body and spirit were still mired in a deep, abyssal swamp.
"I'm a healing-type demon. Naturally, I have my ways." Lance was radiating a holy yet eerie glow, like he was bathed in celestial light and here to save Bakar's soul.
Bakar remained skeptical. "I... I feel like something isn't right... What exactly happened in the classroom just now?"
He felt as though he had endured an incredibly long nightmare, one where a gray-haired demon used a voice wreathed in dark mist to plunge him into an inescapable hell of agony!
Lance smiled. "Don't dwell on such intangible things. They were merely hallucinations. You can distinguish reality from illusion now, can't you? Check your pocket."
Prompted by Lance, Bakar felt his pocket and discovered two additional credit coins. These were the rewards the department head had given him for clearing the challenge. Since Bakar had been unconscious at the time, the instructor had simply slipped them into his pocket.
Bakar stared in disbelief at the three coins shimmering with a red light. It felt as though he had just stepped out of a nightmare and into a beautiful dream. The first class had only just ended, yet he had already secured three credit coins! In the past, this was something he wouldn't have even dared to imagine!
Lance asked with a glowing smile, "So, do you believe this is a wonderful dream now?"
Seeing Bakar's happiness made him happy, too.
The pain tormenting him had vanished in an instant. Bakar quickly stood up, brushed the dust from his clothes, and asked Lance, "Where do we go next?"
Lance recalled Bakar mentioning an incredibly expensive restaurant on campus that served the highest-quality cuisine the Demon Kingdom had to offer. "Bakar, take us to that academy branch of the restaurant personally sanctioned by the Demon King, you know, the one you mentioned earlier."
They even served a few limited-edition dishes capable of boosting one's stats within a single day. Lance felt he ought to savor the finest Demon Kingdom cuisine of this era. Afterward, upon returning to the real world, he could share that experience with old woman Talia.
Perhaps he could even edit footage from his Shadow Realm Recording Program into a special feature for her to watch during the feast. It was the one thing he could do for a homesick Talia.
However, upon hearing Lance's intended destination, Bakar hesitated. "The Demon King-sanctioned restaurant..."
Lance cocked his head. "What's wrong? Aren't the functional zones supposed to be quite safe?"
Bakar said, looking worried, "That area is frequented only by students with an abundance of surplus credit coins, and every single regular there is among the most dangerous students in the school. If you aren't a student of great renown, going there and taking up the resources they use for their leisure could easily earn you their enmity..."
While the functional zones were relatively safe, Bakar was terrified of crossing paths with the elite demon students who frequented that particular spot.
"I see." Lance took the faculty nameplate that was given to him by the head of the Music Department out of his pocket and pinned it to the chest of his outer garment. "But I'm a teacher here now."
Bakar stared, utterly dumbfounded, at the exquisite nameplate on Lance's chest. So, the Radiant Demon he'd been hanging out with all this time was actually a teacher? Was he messing with students, blowing up classrooms, and generally goofing around while ostensibly here for professional development?
