I Swear I'm Not a Demon Masquerading as a Human
Chapter 98: Lance and Frey Team Up for the First TimeIn the lounge area of the student council was a dark wooden coffee table with softly rounded edges. The rich aroma of hot coffee wafted from the porcelain cups, filling the room and instilling a sense of calm.
Frey sat silently on the sofa, offering no objection to the president's arrangements. He had no intention of going rogue, and he had great trust in the president's judgment.
Lance earnestly said, "Please tell us, President."
Always eager to help, he would naturally not stand idly by when faced with urgent school business requiring attention. Moreover, having just joined the Student Management Council, which oversaw such matters, he felt a strong sense of responsibility and duty.
President Monaster slowly explained the situation to the two newcomers. "A small, dilapidated building on campus urgently needs to be demolished. However, a group that was officially disbanded still occupies that wooden cabin as their club house. Unfortunately, it poses safety risks, so I would like to ask you to persuade them to vacate the premises."
The wooden building had originally served as the club house for a group known as The Warrior's Soul. However, due to the team's poor performance in recent years, specifically their over-reliance on brute force at the expense of balance and teamwork, they had been downgraded and eventually disbanded last year by the administration.
Currently, the building was being unofficially occupied by holdover members of the group. Under normal circumstances, both the school administration and the student council might have turned a blind eye to these students, who held a sentimental attachment to their old club house.
The problem, however, was that the group had been in dire straits for years prior to its dissolution. The cabin had gone without repairs for a long time. Furthermore, the group's training activities were highly destructive. Consequently, the building's magical protective barrier had failed, and the structure itself had fallen into such disrepair that it was in serious violation of the Hutton Kingdom Fire Safety and Management Regulations.
It even posed a potential danger to students passing nearby, prompting the school to decide on its demolition. The fire department of the capital was pressing for immediate action and had already granted the school a demolition permit. Regulations required the demolition to be completed within fifteen days. Failure to meet this deadline would result in fines and an official reprimand.
President Monaster shook his head helplessly as he explained, "The problem, however, is that the members who want to protect the old club house refuse to budge. No matter how many notices or safety hazard assessment reports we send them, they simply ignore us. Today is the final deadline set by the fire department. Not only do we need to coordinate their evacuation, but we also have to assist the College of Magical Engineering with the demolition work."
Monaster certainly understood how the students felt. Yet, fire safety was paramount. He had to prioritize the school's reputation and the safety and quality of campus life for the entire student body.
During staff meetings, Monaster, charged with the critical task of mediating between the administration and the student body, had proposed allocating funds to renovate the dilapidated building. However, the administration rejected the idea. They feared that making an exception would set a dangerous precedent, leading to endless future violations, with students citing this incident to demand further concessions from the school.
Lance nodded as he listened. Basically, it was a case involving "squatters" refusing to vacate a building slated for demolition due to fire safety hazards. He then stated with confident assurance, exuding the air of a seasoned professional, "I understand. You've come to the right person for this job, President."
Such confidence made Hyperion turn her head to glance at Lance beside her. Even though the task aligned perfectly with his expertise, it was precisely because he held the moral and legal high ground that she felt a sense of foreboding. She knew all too well what he looked like when he was fully committed to a scheme!
"Excellent." Monaster nodded in satisfaction.
"The school has approved a three-day working holiday for the team members executing this task, along with practical credit rewards equivalent to a quarter of a required course. Furthermore, if the overall work goes smoothly this year, the student council will organize activities, such as a midterm trip funded by the school, that rival those of the top student teams. Of course, it will require hard work from everyone, and I personally apologize if this interferes with your studies."
After briefly explaining the student council's basic operations to Lance and Hyperion, he nodded solemnly to the three first year students.
The student council's grueling tasks came with high risks, but also substantial rewards. Only students who truly loved the university and possessed genuine talent would choose to join.
"President, please don't say that. It is my honor to join this team and serve my fellow students." The sense of responsibility practically overflowing from Lance's words mirrored the time he had set out to save Purgatory Corridor Academy from the threat of closure. That passion was the one thing no one could doubt was genuine.
Hyperion was momentarily rendered speechless. She knew Lance was dying to find a way to legally skip classes while still enjoying the school's protection, conveniences, and resources. He would likely do everything in his power to stay in the student council from now on. There was no risk of his studies actually suffering.
Frey nodded in agreement as well. Having failed to show up for class even once during the first week of the semester, he had been caught red-handed by the Dean of the Knights' College at the Ikerite Crown Casino at three in the morning and was subsequently dumped into the student council.
This was the last chance Frey had, and it was also an option that allowed him to potentially graduate even if he skipped every single class. Fortunately, he got along well with the president. In addition, the student council's base of operations wasn't bad at all. As long as he didn't have to attend actual lessons, he was fine.
President Monaster patted Frey on the shoulder as he said, "Alright then, Frey. I'll leave it to you to lead the way to the Knights' College and clear out that building slated for demolition. I'm counting on you to handle the demolition work as well."
"Not a problem." With that, Frey stood up, waved casually, and headed toward the door.
Lance and Hyperion hurriedly nodded to the president before following Frey as he left.
President Monaster stood up with his hands clasped behind his back, offering some advice as he watched the trio. "Bear this in mind: although the remaining members of The Warrior's Soul team are combative and aggressive, they actually value martial honor. If you can find a way to communicate with them, a resolution should be possible. Whatever you do, avoid a direct confrontation that might escalate tensions on campus."
"No conflict, rational communication, and solving the fire safety issue—Got it. I'll make sure it gets done right!" Lance muttered to himself, then turned back to wave cheerfully at the president.
His words were accompanied by the metallic click of the student council door opening and then latching shut. The president watched as the three of them left the room.
Beside the sofa in the room's lounge area, Asina, holding a tray in one hand, touched her cheek with a look of deep concern. "Monaster, is it really okay to send them?"
Among the club members occupying that hazardous building was a powerful third year student known for her fiery temper. If Lance happened to provoke her, it could trigger a serious incident on campus.
"Have faith in their abilities." Monaster then walked calmly and steadily back to his desk, opened a folder, and focused on reviewing the stack of reports awaiting his attention.
