I Transmigrated Into a Game World as a Former Top Player
Chapter 66: Gatekeeper’s Grudge[Fang]
Quality: Uncommon
Attack: 7 – 13
Effect: Armor Break +4
---
This was a decent pair of curved daggers.
At the very least, the stats were respectable. As an Uncommon item, it could be considered mid-grade. The Armor Break attribute was particularly useful in practical combat.
The other hidden attributes would have to wait—it required a high Appraisal level to see through them. But based on Xander’s experience and a brief examination, his initial assessment was positive: the materials were quality, the durability was solid, and the edges were razor-sharp.
The only drawback was that they hadn’t been maintained in a long time—they weren’t even oiled.
This was the consequence of neglect. After receiving the daggers, Xander immediately began performing basic maintenance, honing them to an even sharper edge.
The friendly red copper dragon had also gifted Xander a pair of scabbards. They were made from some unknown leather—soft to the touch and perfectly suited for sheathing the sharp curved blades.
Xander rested briefly within Professor’s territory before bidding farewell to the kindhearted ancient dragon and continuing his journey northward.
It took just over half a day after leaving the rocky basin before he arrived at the Moonveil Forest.
---
The Moonveil Forest was part of the Wood Elves’ Kingdom. It seemed to have been established by an agreement between the original Elven Kingdom and the Triad Towers’ wizards, serving as a frontier outpost.
This was essentially a wood elven forward base in the south, acting as a buffer zone between the elves and human territories.
There were scattered half-elven villages throughout the area. In truth, half-elves were widely unwelcome—elves rejected them outright, and humans viewed them with suspicion. Thus, adult half-elves typically formed their own communities.
The elves in Moonveil Forest were primarily merchants responsible for trade with surrounding human forces. They were considered reasonable and approachable.
They were different from the conservative elves dwelling deep within the elven kingdom—those who still clung to the glory of the High Elven Second Era Rule, viewing mankind as the lowest form of life, comparable to gnolls and kobolds.
The Moonveil Forest maintained close ties with the Triad Towers to the north, with two sky gondolas departing every week toward the Towers.
Sky gondolas were dwarven technology, reproduced by the Triad Towers’ wizard craftsmen. They were used daily throughout the Triad Towers and surrounding regions. You could always see sky gondola caravans traversing the skies.
This was considered a unique feature of the East Coast landscape.
Xander was somewhat unlucky upon arrival—the relay station’s sky gondola had just departed.
He had no choice but to endure and wait for the next one.
Xander managed to purchase a ticket easily after presenting his baron emblem issued by the South Wizards Alliance. Nothing eventful occurred during the wait.
Three days later, Xander sat in a sky gondola, en route to the Triad Towers.
A day and a half after that, Xander successfully arrived in the Triad Towers region.
A towering spire grew increasingly closer. Under the control of a low-level wizard, the sky gondola slowly descended onto a vast open landing area.
Finally—he had arrived at the Ashen Spire of the Triad Towers.
---
The Ashen Spire was massive, and Magon Academy occupied but a small portion of it.
After disembarking from the sky gondola, Xander followed the signs toward Magon Academy.
He soon arrived at the Academy’s entrance—but still needed to queue for entry verification.
There was a checkpoint at the front to verify each visitor’s status.
’What day is it? So many people are visiting Magon Academy?’
Xander was stunned by the crowd.
Many of these people appeared wealthy—likely nobles from the nearby East Coast.
They were accompanied by their entire families. A family with more than ten people definitely had a young child in tow.
’Ah—it’s almost time for apprentice recruitment.’
Xander suddenly realized. No wonder there were so many people today. He had no choice but to endure and wait.
---
Magon Academy was the Ashen Spire’s apprentice wizard nurturing ground.
Like other Academies, it was responsible for receiving apprentices with magical talent from the South Wizards Alliance and training them to become qualified wizards.
Xander’s younger brother, Dorian, had left the Redoak Vale to study at Magon Academy because of his outstanding wizard aptitude.
When Dorian had returned home six months ago after their father’s death, the Xander of that time had yet to notice anything unusual.
That nine-year-old younger brother had already displayed intelligence and a way of thinking that far exceeded his age.
He never complained to Xander. In truth, Xander had guessed that Dorian must have been the target of bullying at Magon Academy.
Redoak Vale was quite small, and they could barely afford Dorian’s tuition. And wizardry was an expensive path.
’Such a stubborn kid.’
Remembering how young Dorian was, yet so strong-willed, Xander couldn’t help but shake his head.
He hadn’t expected this kind of treatment.
Did those wizards think that since their grandfather’s time, Redoak Vale had completely declined?
Regardless of who was behind this, Xander would make them regret it!
Killing intent flashed in his eyes, and his hands unconsciously pressed against the curved daggers at his belt.
At that moment, a voice called out: "Next!"
From the checkpoint ahead.
’My turn?’
Xander squinted and quickly stepped forward.
---
There weren’t many people responsible for checking visitors—only one apprentice wizard and two fighters.
These fighters weren’t high-ranked. They were only of the first level and seemed to be followers of that apprentice wizard.
This apprentice wore the symbol of Magon Academy, but his two followers didn’t.
He was only responsible for the most basic identity inspection—letting people pass as long as they proved their identity.
This was Magon Academy’s self-confidence. In their territory, no one would dare to cause trouble.
"Baron Xander from Redoak Vale?"
The apprentice wizard sneered from the corner of his mouth.
"That’s right." Xander seemed perfectly calm.
The apprentice wizard held Xander’s baron emblem—also a proof of identity, issued by the South Wizards Alliance.
"I’ve never heard of that place," the apprentice wizard said dismissively.
"There are many places you haven’t heard of." Xander frowned. "Denyo, Sovaa—have you heard of them?"
The two places Xander mentioned were dangerous regions of a lower plane—an apprentice wizard would obviously not recognize them.
What made him deeply unhappy was this apprentice’s attitude.
’This guy... Looks like he knows me...’
Xander studied the apprentice and felt something was wrong.
It was safe to say that this apprentice’s role was essentially that of a receptionist—there was no need to argue this much.
His eyes narrowed with a bad feeling.
---
That apprentice, still holding Xander’s emblem, was already sneering inwardly.
Indeed, Boss White’s information was accurate. That bastard older brother had heard of his illness and hurried here.
But Boss White had said it was more than a week’s journey from Redoak Vale to the Triad Towers. He hadn’t expected him to arrive so quickly.
’Anyway, since Boss White ordered it, I must handle this appropriately.’
’That Redoak Vale has already declined. This Xander is also a waste who couldn’t become a wizard—nothing more. Once his brother dies, he’ll lose all hope of rising.’
’There’s no one behind them. I can act without risk. And I can please the Unicorn Clan’s heir in the process. There’s no reason to hesitate.’
These thoughts flashed through his mind.
Suddenly, he yelled in a loud voice: "There’s something wrong with your proof of identity! It’s clearly a counterfeit!"
"You actually dare to impersonate a noble!?"
"You two—arrest him!"
The surrounding people were startled.
Impersonating a noble? Wasn’t that a capital offense? Would anyone really dare to do that?
But before they could react, the two fighters immediately rushed in from both sides.
---
"Oh? There’s really something wrong? You actually dare to slander me."
Xander’s heart burned with cold fury. "Since when am I easy to bully?"
He didn’t waste another word—and unsheathed his daggers!
Waiting to be captured had never been in Xander’s vocabulary! Only two first-rank fighters—it wasn’t a big deal for Xander!

[Combat Initiated]
[Target: Magon Academy Guard x2]
[Estimated Threat Level: Low]
---
The curved daggers gleamed in the afternoon light as Xander moved.
The first fighter lunged forward with a heavy punch aimed at his head.
Xander didn’t dodge.
He shifted.
A half-step to the left—barely a whisper of movement—and the punch sailed past his ear. In the same motion, the pommel of his right dagger cracked against the fighter’s wrist.
"Crack!"
The man howled, his hand going limp.
Before the second fighter could react, Xander’s left dagger swept low—not to kill, but to disable. The flat of the blade smacked against the man’s knee.
He collapsed instantly.
Two seconds. Two fighters down.
The apprentice wizard’s face went pale.
"Y-You—"
Xander stepped forward, his eyes cold as winter steel.
"Now then—let’s talk about that counterfeit accusation."
He pressed the tip of his dagger lightly against the apprentice’s chin.
"Who sent you?"
