I Write Novels in a Zerg Prison
Chapter 169: Ulysses Lowers His Eyes ObedientlyHe told An Ruo that all these restrictions were only because of the Male Zerg Association's requirements.
The Third Legion and the Seventh Legion completed the handover, and General Enzo officially moved into the Military Region Prison with the egg.
When Ulysses came to report on the progress of the closed beta, he saw the male Zerg sitting in a reclining chair on the balcony garden, holding the egg in his arms while browsing StarNet.
Ulysses' gaze lingered on the flawless white male egg for a second longer before he deliberately looked away as though he didn't care.
Enzo was becoming more and more unruly. He couldn't even incubate the egg he was responsible for himself and had actually come to trouble the male Zerg with it.
When An Ruo saw him arrive, he straightened up and invited him to sit...
...except there were no seats left.
Ulysses had brought his own chair.
He took a lounge chair out of his spatial button and sat down diagonally across from the male Zerg.
An Ruo secretly glanced at it. Judging from the style, it was still the very same chair he used to have. His gaze toward Ulysses instantly filled with resentment.
The "bandit" had stolen his chair and even brought it here to show off in front of him.
Ulysses was exceptionally sensitive to every emotion in the male Zerg's eyes. He immediately looked back, but all he saw was the male hurriedly averting his gaze, withdrawing it as though trying to hide something before looking down at the egg in his arms.
That male egg again.
Suppressing his emotions, Ulysses began his report.
"All one hundred invitations have been distributed. Ninety-nine identity cards have already been activated, ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) and the players have logged into the game for testing. Feedback from the beta is gradually coming in."
As he spoke, Ulysses found himself somewhat dissatisfied with Cyril.
He had no idea what was going on with Cyril's household. Weren't there plenty of Zergs in his family? Yet one invitation card still hadn't been activated, making the results he was reporting to the male Zerg less than perfect.
An Ruo didn't pay much attention to the number. Only one day had passed. Having this many Zergs already participating in the beta was quite good.
"What kind of feedback?" he asked.
Ulysses paused briefly before answering.
"It's mainly focused on naming characters and character appearances in Virtual Love Bug."
"Hm?" An Ruo looked puzzled. "Is there a bug?"
"No." Ulysses answered seriously. "According to regulations, when naming a game character, players may not use the same name as a famous male Zerg in reality. Likewise, without authorization, they may not import another male Zerg's appearance data."
"Some players feel these rules are too strict and hope the restrictions can be relaxed. But these are requirements imposed by the Male Zerg Association. We don't want to come into conflict with them, so we can only comply."
When mentioning the Male Zerg Association, Ulysses lowered his eyes, looking respectful and submissive.
Seeing him like this, An Ruo felt strangely uncomfortable.
It was as though he wasn't the powerful Marshal who had single-handedly established the military government and held the entire Federation in the palm of his hand, but merely a helpless military female forced to bow before the Male Zerg Association.
He also knew that Ulysses' display probably wasn't genuine...
Ninety-nine point nine percent, it wasn't.
Every expression and every tone he displayed was merely another weapon, another means of achieving his objective.
The only thing An Ruo couldn't figure out was what exactly Ulysses hoped to accomplish by acting this way now.
Was he trying to show that he followed the rules?
And... shift the blame onto the Male Zerg Association?
After thinking it over, however, An Ruo didn't actually feel there was anything wrong with those restrictions.
Using the same name as a famous male Zerg—or making a character that looked too similar—really wasn't appropriate. It would only invite unnecessary trouble.
...
Ninth Military Region.
Major Warren had spent an entire day sculpting the face of his virtual male Zerg.
For the eleventh time, it failed the review.
He had recreated Lord Annor's appearance exactly as it had looked during the Psychic Soothing session, reproducing everything from facial features to clothing.
He believed the face still lacked some of Lord Annor's spirit, not even one ten-thousandth of the original.
Yet despite that, it kept failing review again and again.
He could only try adding glasses, changing the hairstyle, replacing the clothes...
He fought against the review system for half the night.
He had been just one step away from putting a mask over the face.
Finally, after changing both the hair color and eye color and making slight adjustments to the facial features, it finally passed.
"..."
Looking at the completely unrecognizable Lord before him, Warren's heart shattered into countless pieces.
At least there were still faint traces of Lord Annor left.
He reluctantly convinced himself to accept this ultra-ultra-ultra-low-budget version of Lord Annor.
Then he started choosing a name.
Annor.
Rejected.
Lord Annor.
Rejected.
Lord Annor.
Rejected.
An€€.
Rejected.
An Ruo.
Re-re-rejected!
An.
Rejected!!!
Annord.
Annora.
Annot...
Rejected.
His mind suddenly short-circuited, and he even typed in "An-shen."
Still rejected.
He almost laughed from anger.
This wasn't simply forbidding names identical to famous Lords in reality.
It was banning every nickname, every related word, every possible association.
The rules were absurdly strict.
Strict to the point of being unreasonable.
High-ranking male Zergs were rare proportionally, but considering the enormous population of the entire Zerg race, there were still a great many of them.
If every Lord's name was restricted like this, there would hardly be any usable words left.
Convinced it couldn't be right, Warren submitted it as a suspected bug.
While waiting for a response, he checked the group chat to see everyone else's creations.
It was one of Lord Annor's fan groups.
Several female Zergs who had received beta access were sharing the virtual male Zergs they had created.
Warren opened them and took a look.
None were crafted as meticulously as his.
But remembering how completely ruined his own final version looked, he nearly lost his composure again.
Those beta testers had encountered the exact same problem while naming their characters.
No matter how they tried to work around it, they were blocked.
The review system was so strict it almost felt as though it were deliberately targeting them.
Warren logged onto StarNet, only to discover that names resembling those of other famous male Zergs passed with ease.
Lord Xi'an from the Ninth Military Region also had countless fans.
Warren even saw two players who had named their characters "Xien" and "Sien," both of which were approved.
How was that fair?
Even the appearance had barely been changed.
Red hair.
Green eyes.
The hair color and eye color hadn't been altered at all, and the character was even wearing clothing resembling a military uniform.
Yet it had still passed.
So the strict restrictions only applied to that Lord?
Warren entered the beta discussion group again.
He discovered that the only fans suffering reviews as strict as theirs were An-shen's fans.
Very little of An-shen's appearance had ever been made public.
There was only the image from the Legion Ceremony—and even then, he had been wearing a mask.
Even so, it still couldn't pass review.
Warren stared at the screenshots people had posted of "An-shen" wearing every imaginable variation of masks.
For some reason, they felt vaguely familiar.
Then he immediately dismissed the thought.
He had spent day and night sculpting virtual male Zerg faces until his eyes were probably ruined. At this point he couldn't even distinguish beauty from ugliness anymore.
Everything he looked at resembled Lord Annor.
Then another thought crossed his mind.
Those just happened to be the Marshal's former and current partners.
A complicated feeling welled up inside Warren.
The Marshal's taste really hadn't changed.
He liked exactly that type of male Zerg.
Of course...
They really were incredibly handsome.
There simply wasn't anyone better looking.
Warren instinctively ignored the Lord's photographs from his younger years.
Those counted as black history.
At that point, everything finally made sense to him.
He had heard the military had invested in developing this game.
The unusually strict review standards surrounding those two Lords were probably out of consideration for the Marshal's male Zergs—both the former one and the current one.
Warren thought that since they were already divorced, there shouldn't still be so many restrictions.
But since it involved the Marshal, he didn't dare say anything publicly.
Perhaps it was precisely because one of them was an ex that everything related to him had to be avoided even more carefully.
The impact of that divorce case had simply been too enormous.
Even Lord Annor's most devoted fans remained exceptionally clear-headed whenever the topic came up.
None of them dared argue even a single word.
That also had something to do with the reply Lord Annor had once sent them.
In that letter, Lord Annor had repeatedly urged them not to sink into the mire, but to cherish themselves more.
Warren let out a heavy sigh.
He said nothing more and resigned himself to changing the name.
He entered:
Doctor.
Review passed.
...
In the sky garden of the Military Region Prison.
With lowered eyes and an obedient expression, Ulysses told An Ruo that all these restrictions existed solely because they were required by the Male Zerg Association.
