I Write Novels in a Zerg Prison
Chapter 31: Generally Speaking, This Is Called Score ManipulationUlysses Summons Uriel to the Marshal's Office
“Your rank is... A-class.”
Uriel looked at the grade displayed on the enormous machine, his expression turning slightly solemn.
The grade itself wasn't the issue.
The problem was that the measured psychic threshold was an absurdly neat whole number.
Psychic Threshold: 10,000,000
Ten million, exactly the boundary value for A-class.
Not one point more, not one point less.
Perfectly exact.
Cases like this were extremely rare. How could it be so precise?
Uriel stared at the number for a long while before finally asking the male Zerg:
“Your Excellency, would you like to try again? Perhaps you can reach an even higher level.”
Higher?
Did he mean Super A?
An Ruo looked at the red line above A-class on the instrument.
“Okay, I'll try.”
Fixing his eyes on the red line, An Ruo concentrated with all his might and circulated his psychic power.
Super A, Super A, Super A.
He repeated it in his heart.
Then he watched the indicator bar representing his psychic power rise continuously until it reached the red line.
“50,000,000. A+-class. Super A.”
Uriel looked at the number displayed above.
Fifty million.
Again, another perfectly neat integer.
Again, precisely at the threshold of A+-class.
Two measurements.
Less than five minutes apart.
A fluctuation of forty million.
Completely beyond the realm of normal.
Under ordinary circumstances, this was called score manipulation.
“Would Your Excellency like to try again?” Uriel asked patiently.
Again?
An Ruo immediately became wary.
What was Major General Uriel expecting?
Did he want him to break into S-class?
That would attract far too much attention and would be completely unreasonable.
Super A was already eye-catching enough. If he turned out to be S-class, the entire Federation would focus on him.
An Ruo felt as if countless eyes from the upper echelons were gazing down upon him.
A chill ran through him.
The original body's rank was B-class. Advancing to A-class could still be explained away as a breakthrough.
Super A was already pushing it, though not entirely incomprehensible.
S-class was different...
The Zerg race had not produced an S-class male Zerg in thousands of years.
The next S-class would only appear three years later—
The original novel's male protagonist.
Right in front of Uriel, An Ruo performed another psychic test.
This time, his result directly dropped below Super A.
Psychic Threshold: 41,592,653.58
Uriel looked at the completely irregular number, complete with decimal places, and his expression cracked for a moment.
This was the normal situation.
But after the previous two abnormal readings, this one instead became the unusual one.
Psychic testing was private.
There were no other Zerg present besides him.
Uriel invited the male Zerg to rest in the lounge first while he summoned technicians to inspect the machine and rule out malfunctions.
In the end, the conclusion was:
“The instrument is functioning normally. No faults detected.”
The three values were worlds apart, yet the machine was perfectly fine.
After pondering for a long time, Uriel ultimately submitted only the third result and erased the first two records.
[Annor, A-class (possesses A+-class potential), Psychic Threshold: 41,592,653.58...]
“Your Excellency, thank you for waiting. Your test results are complete. Congratulations on advancing to A-class.”
Uriel apologized:
“According to regulations, you need to replace your suppressor.”
An Ruo, seated on the sofa, nodded and cooperatively stood up.
Looking at the male Zerg before him, Uriel said softly, “Forgive my disrespect,” then reached past the loose strands of long hair and lightly placed his fingertip against the suppressor's recognition area on the back of his neck.
Beep.
The suppressor unlocked.
Uriel removed it and stepped back half a pace, opening the distance between them. Throughout the entire process, he never touched the male Zerg's skin.
An Ruo secretly let out a sigh of relief.
Raising a hand to touch the back of his neck, he felt as though his whole neck had become lighter.
Uriel turned sideways and placed the old suppressor into a box, observing the male Zerg out of the corner of his eye.
Male Zergs usually had stray psychic threads surrounding them.
The psychic pressure of high-ranking male Zergs was overwhelming to female Zergs.
But around this gentleman...
There was nothing.
Nothing at all.
He was like a tree.
Like a stone.
Like a book...
Only by having absolute control over psychic power could one suppress their psychic threads so perfectly that not even a trace of residual pressure escaped.
He was as clean and natural as flowers, grass, and trees.
This simply wasn't the kind of male Zerg that should appear in a prison.
But Uriel still had to present him with a new suppressor.
The new suppressor was a bracelet.
“The design changed?” An Ruo asked in surprise.
He had thought that after his promotion, his restrictions would become even stricter.
A bracelet was obviously less secure than a collar.
“Yes,” Uriel lowered his eyes and said, “This is the highest-grade psychic suppressor. It can restrict any psychic power below S-class.”
That answer wasn't exactly related to the question.
An Ruo glanced at him but didn't pursue the matter and put on the new suppressor himself.
The silver-white bracelet automatically adjusted around his wrist, looking more like an exquisite ornament.
It really was much more comfortable than the collar.
And far less humiliating.
As for restricting psychic power...
An Ruo hardly felt anything.
Could he really be S-class?
Panic rose in An Ruo's heart.
If that were discovered, he truly wouldn't be able to explain it.
Uriel glanced at his terminal.
“There is still some time left. Is there anything you would like to do? Return to your room and rest? Or perhaps get some fresh air?
“There is an indoor garden in the center of the prison with many plants. According to regulations, incarcerated male Zergs have one to two star-hours of recreation each day and may move within designated areas under the escort of military female Zergs. You haven't been there yet, have you?”
An Ruo was indeed tempted for a moment.
He knew about the indoor garden.
But it was rather far from his room, and he was lazy and disliked going out. Besides, he had novels to write, so he had never gone.
After thinking it over, he still gave up.
“Next time. Let's do psychic soothing first.”
Next time for sure.
Forever “next time.”
With the male Zerg showing such enthusiasm, Uriel naturally couldn't refuse and could only arrange more psychic soothing sessions.
“Can more military female Zergs be scheduled today? I'm A-class now!” An Ruo asked.
“Yes. The daily task duration is limited to three star-hours. Within those three star-hours, Your Excellency may soothe as many military female Zergs as you wish. There are no longer numerical restrictions.”
An Ruo: “...”
It sounded pretty good.
But compared with before, there didn't seem to be much difference.
This was practically forcing him toward group soothing.
If he wanted more military female Zergs to receive treatment, he either had to compress the time to the extreme and do one every second—
Or he had to use group psychic soothing.
An Ruo had never attempted group soothing.
Even in the original novel, only the S-class male protagonist had achieved it.
After some thought, he decided to first shorten individual treatment times and improve efficiency.
One second each was impossible.
He would start with one or two minutes each.
Thus, for an entire morning, An Ruo sat behind the treatment desk continuously calling out:
“Next.”
“Next.”
He had become an experienced doctor.
Eventually, Uriel simply installed a bell on his desk.
Three star-hours.
One hundred and fifty military female Zergs had been soothed.
The ones in front didn't even have time to express their gratitude in fancy ways before being dragged away to make room for the next.
One hundred and fifty military female Zergs.
The efficiency looked impressive.
Nearly one Zerg per minute.
But compared to the total number of military female Zergs needing psychic soothing, it was still insignificant.
Tiny to the point of almost being nothing.
An Ruo continued thinking about developing group psychic soothing.
The moment he returned to his room, he logged onto StarNet and began searching for related information.
The more he searched, the deeper his frown became.
Damn it!
Why wasn't there something called Group Psychic Soothing for Hatchlings?
As an outsider, how was he supposed to survive in Zerg society without hatchling tutorials?
...
Capital Star, Military Headquarters Meeting.
The nine military region generals were all present for the rare occasion.
Even the Ninth Military Region's general, stationed on the distant frontier, attended through a virtual projection.
The Zerg race was naturally warlike.
Yet under different leaders, they displayed completely different styles.
When the supreme leader was a female Zerg, the race tended toward aggression and warfare, continuously expanding outward.
The overall atmosphere resembled the great villain of the universe.
When the supreme leader was a male Zerg, the opposite occurred.
The Zergs would voluntarily halt expansion, turn inward, focus on defense and domestic development, placing the protection of male Zergs above everything else.
Sometimes they even promoted peace throughout the universe and became messengers of peace.
Which was a rather dark joke.
The Zerg race had not had a male Zerg leader for many years.
Even the previous male Zerg ruler had only shone briefly before disappearing.
Every general present could be described as a warmonger who advocated expansion.
Under such circumstances, the psychological problems among female Zergs became increasingly severe.
Originally, there had been no solution.
But recently, something seemed to have changed.
The routine military meeting concluded.
Yet none of the generals left.
Instead, they all looked toward the Marshal seated above.
Ulysses had only recently assumed the office of Marshal. Countless matters required his attention.
He was so overwhelmed by complicated affairs that he had neglected certain things.
Seeing that everyone was looking at him, clearly wanting to speak, Ulysses slightly raised his eyelids.
“What is it? Speak.”
The generals exchanged glances.
In the end, General Muir of the Ninth Military Region was the first to lose patience.
The Ninth Military Region possessed the largest number of expeditionary forces.
Psychic soothing was genuinely important to them.
“Marshal! Have you hidden some kind of treasure in the First Military Region?”
Ulysses: “?”
The First Military Region? Treasure?
The other generals also began speaking:
“Has the psychic soothing machine finally been developed? You can't let only the First Military Region use it. That's favoritism.”
“All those perfect scores of one hundred. A machine can't possibly achieve such results, can it? I heard seventy points was the limit.”
“Is that gentleman's rank accurate?”
“Could the First Military Region lend us a psychic soother?”
Among all the voices, one question stood out in particular.
“Did you really divorce your former Male Lord?”
The conference room instantly fell silent.
Ulysses slowly raised his eyes.
Everyone's gaze shifted to the speaker, their eyes containing shock, admiration, and condolences.
Although the matter had happened long ago, nobody had ever dared discuss it openly in front of the Marshal.
General Muir's expression stiffened, cold sweat pouring down his face.
He quickly tried to patch things up.
“I mean... that gentleman's technique is excellent. If more Zergs could receive psychic soothing...”
The attempt at recovery failed miserably.
Ulysses more or less understood the cause but became even more puzzled.
Psychic soothing within military regions wasn't confined to each region.
There were exchanges between regions, and the medically advanced First Military Region often accepted critically endangered military female Zergs from elsewhere.
That male Zerg seemed to have performed extraordinarily well recently.
He had carried out numerous perfect-score psychic soothing sessions, enough that even these generals personally came asking him for that Zerg.
Completely unreasonable.
That male Zerg...
Ulysses narrowed his eyes.
He could barely remember the male Zerg's appearance anymore.
His last memory was of that glance in the court of judgment.
Across half the courtroom, the male Zerg's panicked eyes had looked toward him, desperately wanting to explain something, carrying a faint plea for help.
But when their eyes met—
The struggle disappeared.
His expression became one of silence, understanding, regret, and apology...
A very strange look.
If that had been remorse, it was far too late.
Suddenly, the personal terminal on his wrist lit up.
Ulysses glanced at the message.
Seeing its contents, his brows slowly furrowed.
The generals below exchanged knowing looks, their eyes full of gossip.
A message on a personal terminal ruled out military intelligence and official matters.
What private affair could make the Marshal care so much?
Ulysses suddenly stood up and swept his gaze across everyone present.
“That will be all for today. Uriel will provide answers to your questions later. Meeting adjourned.”
With that, he strode away.
The generals in the conference room looked at each other.
“What happened?”
“A personal message... if it's an unmarried female Zerg, then he's probably rushing off to meet a male Zerg.
“If it's a married female Zerg, then undoubtedly some trouble happened with the male Zerg at home.
“As for the Marshal...”
“Hard to say.”
Elsewhere.
Inside the Marshal's office, Ulysses summoned Uriel.
