Chapter 354: Chapter 306: Brianna: Mercy and Love (Part 2)
He wasn’t wrong—judging purely by the pros and cons of the Nest Dominance Game, Westley was a partner who far surpassed any Hunter.
Before Brianna could answer, he turned to Fu Tailan.
"I presume you’re here for the Nest Dominance Game as well, aren’t you?"
He glanced at Brianna from the corner of his eye.
"Let me be honest with you. There’s one Illusion that you can’t possibly take from me without my personal cooperation. I can tell you right now, even if I die, I will not cooperate and hand it over to you. So, if your goal really is the Nest Dominance Game, I can show you a clear path forward."
Westley was no fool—even with an Illusion, an incompetent person could never have made it this far.
Even pushed into such a corner, he was analyzing the situation, weighing the pros and cons. He realized there was only one path to survival: the fissure in the alliance between Fu Tailan and Brianna.
"The so-called Westley Team is, naturally, centered around me. I can choose who to bring in. Rather than making a move on me, losing a target Illusion completely, and getting us both eliminated from the Nest Dominance Game, why not join forces with me? How about it?"
He didn’t look at Brianna, merely waving a hand in her direction.
"She’s my daughter. I know better than anyone what capabilities and resources she has. What’s the benefit of siding with her? Think about it carefully. If you join my team now, your progress will leap from zero straight to four. What do you want? What’s your goal for ruling the Nest? I can grant it all."
Fu Tailan glanced at Brianna. "...Is what he’s saying true?"
It was strange. When speaking with this boy, even when they only exchanged fragments, they understood each other perfectly.
Brianna nodded, pushing her tongue against the inside of her cheek in a gesture. "It’s this one. You saw it too, right?"
Logically, she probably shouldn’t have told a future competitor that the "Rumor" Illusion was in Westley’s mouth...
But at this moment, Brianna felt as if she were being slowly, irresistibly burned by something light and brilliant, scorching her thoughts until they floated, light and airy, in midair.
She just couldn’t bring herself to care what might happen to Fu Tailan or the target Illusion in the future.
’It doesn’t matter what happens it’s fine my life reaching this night has been so strange so confusing but so satisfying’
She felt so strange in this moment that not even the nearby Black Cube could make her tremble in fear.
Fu Tailan understood. "Ah, that one... Seriously. It fell into Chaisi’s hands."
’Is that so?’
Brianna felt as if she were hearing about something that had nothing to do with her.
When "Chaisi" was mentioned, Fu Tailan’s face twisted slightly, as if he’d tasted something disgusting. "To think I have to ensure he gets it... This is sickening. But hey, not even you can stop me."
"As for me,"
Brianna couldn’t help but laugh. She felt so light and strange, she almost suspected she was slowly inflating, her head burning, buzzing as it floated into the air. "Right now... I really don’t care at all."
"What?"
Seeing that his speech had elicited a completely illogical response, Westley’s brow furrowed. "What are you two talking about? Don’t tell me your alliance is so strong that you can peacefully share a goal like the Nest Dominance Game."
"Share?"
Fu Tailan lowered his head and took another drag from his cigarette. "I was disqualified from the Nest Dominance Game long ago... I’m just here to make sure everything happens according to history, without deviation."
Westley didn’t understand, but that didn’t stop him from realizing his attempt had failed.
He turned and bolted for the back of the hall—in that direction, there was not only a fully opened Black Cube, but also a row of three doors.
There definitely wasn’t enough time to retract the Black Cube and use it to attack again.
But Brianna would bet her life that her father had weapons stashed behind those doors—and maybe even another Illusion.
’How can I let you get past?’
’Didn’t you hear? This is all history.’
’Since it’s already happened just follow history and die your fated death what’s so scary about being killed by Fu Tailan—compared to being killed by the residents—’
Brianna’s footsteps hammered against the floor as she launched herself through the air, pouncing on her father’s back.
She reached out with a hand that belonged to a man, a hand larger than Westley’s daughter’s, and seized Westley’s shoulder. She gripped it tightly, yanking him backward and making him stumble.
In that instant, Westley’s reaction was extremely fast, so fast he was on par with a Hunter.
He twisted his arm around and grabbed Brianna’s wrist.
Despite his age, he had not neglected his training, and his strength was still considerable. After grabbing her arm, Westley used all his might and, while she was still off-balance, flung her violently forward.
The instant Brianna realized she was falling toward the Black Cube, the memory of that night from her childhood slammed into her mind like a train.
She could no longer control herself and let out a long, piercing scream.
The glance Westley shot her seemed to say, ’So you’re still afraid of the Black Cube after all.’
He let go.
Brianna couldn’t stop her fall. She could feel the Black Cube, not far away, waiting for her quietly, just as it had all those years ago.
’The difference was, this time Dad already knew she wouldn’t be modified into a boy. Dad already knew her thoughts and her hatred. Dad wouldn’t let her out again—’
Just as shadows engulfed Brianna’s vision, turning it dark, she felt her clothes suddenly gain a life of their own. They shot backward, leaping into midair as if they, too, refused to enter the Black Cube.
’What—’
’Her clothes had stopped her—no, that wasn’t right.’
’Someone had grabbed her clothes.’
She twisted her head and saw Fu Tailan, who had rushed over at some point. He was clutching the back of her shirt, and with a grunt and a heave—Brianna’s face scraped past the edge of the Black Cube, and she landed with a heavy THUD on the floor, only a fist’s-width away from it.
Westley muttered a curse under his breath and, no longer hesitating, took the opportunity to bolt, diving into one of the rooms at the back.
Brianna’s eyes were wide. The Black Cube was practically touching her nose. Her short, panicked breaths hit the darkness and vanished without a trace, like a stone sinking into the ocean.
"Miss,"
Fu Tailan knelt beside her, panting, his voice laced with an unidentifiable emotion.
"It seems I was mistaken."
’...What?’
"Westley does die," he said in a low voice, a voice that brought to mind a Siren singing across a foggy sea in the dead of night. "But I’m not the one who kills him."
’Why?’
"He dies... very intact."
A hand appeared in front of Brianna. She grabbed it and, using the boy’s strength, pulled herself to her feet.
Fu Tailan lowered his head and took a drag from his cigarette. Through the rising, swirling white smoke, a dark light glinted in his eyes.
"The one who kills him is merciful... The one who kills him loves him."
