Chapter 356: Chapter 200: Wedding Night

A year ago, after the border defenses fell, it was said that with the help of one of the "Odd People"—whose predictions were uncannily accurate—and the might of General Zheng, they managed to retake the lost territories and drive the Barbarians beyond the border once more. The Northern Barbarians had since ceased their aggression. Xie Yunliu, having sustained minor injuries on the battlefield, was ordered by General Zheng to rest and recuperate.

That member of the Odd People earned the Emperor’s admiration and had now become the National Preceptor of the Daqian Dynasty.

Worried for his sister’s safety, Xie Yunliu sought out Bai Xiaosheng once more. Based on the information he received, Xie Yunliu got the sense that his sister was heading west. He set out into the Great Desert alone, following the Green River all the way to his current location, Richan Valley.

By the time Xie Yunliu finished recounting his year of hardship and wandering, it was the middle of the night. He had somehow drained a large pot of the very wine he’d been scorning and was now slumped drunkenly over the table, muttering to himself.

"Brother, I’m getting married."

Xie Luohe suddenly said to Xie Yunliu, her face beaming with happiness.

"Married? Marriage is great... HIC! Wait, what poor sap would dare marry you? Heh heh heh..." Xie Yunliu didn’t open his eyes.

Zheng Xiu and Xie Luohe looked at each other, speechless.

The corner of Zheng Xiu’s mouth twitched; he was clearly struggling to keep himself from laughing out loud.

Xie Luohe clenched her fist and slapped the back of Xie Yunliu’s head.

SMACK!

Xie Yunliu let out a wretched cry and passed out.

"Take care, brother."

Xie Luohe let out a soft sigh and smiled.

「The tenth day of the eighth month.」

The moment Xie Yunliu sobered up, he grabbed his blade, radiating killing intent and bellowing that he was going to chop up that "poor sap."

Zheng Xiu had anticipated this. He calmly brought out a basin of sand and excitedly challenged Xie Yunliu to a duel outside Richan Valley.

No one knew what happened between the two men, but Xie Yunliu came running back, his face bruised and swollen. Later, some curious folk from the Great Desert went to look outside Richan Valley and discovered a small patch of sand densely covered in neat, narrow pits of various sizes, looking as if a "sword rain" had fallen.

When Xie Yunliu found Xie Luohe again, his face was a picture of grudging respect. As they talked, he would one moment grit his teeth and accuse, "He cheated," and the next, earnestly urge her not to let such a fine brother-in-law—who had practically delivered himself to their door—get away.

「In the blink of an eye, the fifteenth day of the eighth month arrived.」

In Richan Town, pigs were slaughtered and sheep were butchered. The streets were festooned with banners and bright, festive red lanterns.

There were no tables or chairs, no elaborate rituals. The people of the Sun Tribe simply ate, drank, and celebrated from morning onward in a continuous feast. Xie Luohe, dressed in her crimson wedding robes, had planned to wait quietly in the bridal chamber for Zheng Xiu. But as she listened to the boisterous celebration and shouts of congratulations outside, she finally couldn’t take it anymore. She lifted her red veil and joined the drinking.

Zheng Xiu hadn’t wanted to drink. For one, the wine was terrible; for another, he was afraid of getting ambushed again while drunk. But he got swept up in the celebratory atmosphere, eating and drinking from noon until dusk, right up to the so-called auspicious hour.

Xie Yunliu rubbed his bald head, grinning like a fool as he watched the well-dressed newlyweds. They were escorted before him by a crowd of children, like the moon surrounded by stars. Xie Luohe supported the staggering Zheng Xiu, muttering that it would have saved her a lot of trouble if he’d just drunk himself unconscious.

"This has been a long time coming!" Xie Yunliu rubbed his hands together excitedly, and as he did, his eyes began to glisten with tears.

He had waited for this for so many years, and it was finally happening.

"Even if I die on the battlefield now, I’ll have no regrets!"

The Grand Elder tapped his staff on the ground and announced in a loud voice, "According to the customs of the Central Plains, the new couple shall perform the first bow: to Heaven and Earth!"

Xie Luohe pushed Zheng Xiu’s head down as they knelt and bowed to Heaven and Earth.

"The second bow: to the parents!"

Xie Luohe smiled at Xie Yunliu and said, "Brother, take care."

"Of course I’ll take care! I’ll take care! I definitely will!" Xie Yunliu laughed foolishly and hiccupped. Then, seized by a sudden impulse, he yelled, "Wait a minute!"

The entire scene fell into a dead silence.

All eyes stared fixedly at Xie Yunliu, wondering what kind of stunt the bride’s "dear brother" was about to pull.

"It’s a shame," Xie Yunliu said with a sigh of regret. "I just feel like it’s not... grand enough. Brother-in-law, how about in the future, you marry my sister all over again, but with proper splendor?"

"Not grand enough?" Zheng Xiu narrowed his eyes and smirked. He bit his fingertip and touched it to the Luohe Brush, which instantly seemed to come alive. Crimson motes of light scattered into the sky, transforming into a rain of petals that drifted down over the town. A magnificent canopy of floral red enveloped Richan Town, as vibrant as a bride’s makeup and as beautiful as a painting. They looked like countless peach blossoms, blooming resplendently in the night sky.

Zheng Xiu sucked smugly on his bleeding finger. "Is that grand enough for you?"

For a moment, everyone, including Xie Luohe and Xie Yunliu, was completely mesmerized.

"Idiot."

Xie Luohe stared blankly for a moment, then suddenly broke into a smile. She hoisted Zheng Xiu onto her shoulder and, quick as a flash, vanished from sight.

"Husband and wife..."

The Grand Elder had been about to call for the final bow between husband and wife, but by the time he looked, there was no trace of the couple left.

Snapping out of his daze, Xie Yunliu burst into laughter and waved his hands dismissively. "No need for the last bow! No need!" He rubbed his eyes, spun around, and bellowed, "This brother-in-law has my, Xie Yunliu’s, approval! All right, everyone scatter! Tonight, we drink until we drop!"

...

「Inside the room.」

THUD! Xie Luohe tossed Zheng Xiu onto the bed and, in the blink of an eye, had him stripped completely naked.

Her aggressive posture, like a tyrant about to have his way by force, shocked Zheng Xiu into sobering up a little. "Are you serious?"

"Less talk!" Xie Luohe suddenly burst into tears, then bit Zheng Xiu, drawing blood.

"It’s fake! It’s all fake! What are you afraid of?!"

Xie Luohe screamed through her tears, then suddenly began to laugh, a strange, unsettling sound. "I don’t just want to be your wife."

His mouth was finally freed. Just as Zheng Xiu was about to speak, a single, crystalline tear fell beside his lips.

Xie Luohe murmured, "The dream is fake, but all of this is real! You’ll forget in the end... you’ll forget..."

"So I’ve decided... to become a mystery."

"You will forever wonder why. You will never solve it, never understand it, never guess the truth. I, Xie Luohe, will become a part of your destiny—an eternal, unsolvable mystery."

"For lifetimes to come..."

"Gongsun Mo, your unsolvable mystery!"
