Victor's attention returned to the Duel Field.
The field that had once been occupied by the imposing figure of Meteor Black Dragon now stood empty. Bottomless Trap Hole had already served its purpose, its card resting among the others in his Graveyard, while his options appeared to be more and more limited each passing moment.
His own Life Points had also fallen below half, and across from him, Metalzoa remained.
The massive mechanical demon stood unmoving, its metal armour reflecting the flickering light cast by the Shadow Game with its 3000 ATK Points, enough to end the duel with a single successful attack.
Objectively speaking, Victor's position appeared even bleaker, especially when the only monster capable of defeating Metalzoa already rested inside his Graveyard.
Metalzoa's jagged lips slowly curled upward.
"So?" the Duel Spirit mocked. "Have you finally run out of answers?"
Victor offered no response; instead, his gaze drifted toward the last two cards resting within his hand, Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
His thumb lightly brushed over the surfaces and paused while thinking, 'The sensation is... different. Until now every card had felt exactly as one would expect, sturdy cardstock imbued with Spirit Energy, nothing more. But these two... There is warmth. It's subtle, almost imperceptible yet unmistakable...'
Neither card projected the crushing spiritual pressure Zoa possessed, and neither attempted to communicate with him; instead, Victor perceived something much quieter flowing through the Spirit Energy contained within the cards.
Resolve. Confidence. Expectation. As though they were patiently waiting, waiting for him to notice.
There was no urgency within those emotions, no fear, no attempt to influence his decision as they simply waited with absolute confidence that he would understand when the time came.
Victor had experienced countless forms of magic throughout his studies, but none had resembled this quiet certainty. Rather than commanding him, the Duel Spirits entrusted the decision entirely to him.
It was unexpectedly agreeable.
Victor slowly closed his fingers around them.
His expression remained as composed as ever.
He still hadn't discovered the path toward victory, but that did not mean one didn't exist, and he wouldn't give up until he found one.
Then his senses suddenly caught something else, Spirit Energy.
It wasn't coming from the barrier, nor from Metalzoa, but it originated from the two monster cards in his hand.
The energy flowed outward before converging toward a location that had been completely empty since the last turn, where he summoned Meteor Black Dragon from the Extra Deck.
Victor's eyes narrowed as he noticed that a new card gradually materialised there, created by the combined Spirit Energy of Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
For a brief instant, Victor almost forgot the duel entirely.
His gaze remained fixed upon the Extra Deck as intricate streams of Spirit Energy flowed from Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes Black Dragon alike, weaving together with astonishing precision. There was no trace of outside interference. The Shadow Game merely allowed the phenomenon to unfold while the two Duel Spirits themselves shaped the Spirit Energy into something entirely new.
'They're creating it...' Countless questions immediately surfaced within his mind as scientific curiosity momentarily overtook even the duel itself, 'A new card... born during the Shadow Game? Created by the Duel Spirits themselves? Has the possibility always existed within the Duel Spirits? Is this unique to Shadow Games? Can any Duel Spirit achieve something similar under the proper circumstances? Or is this the result of the bond they shared with their Duelist?
Victor forced every question aside, 'Stop... There will be time for research later. When I survive... For now... I have to focus on the duel.'
Shortly after thinking that, a faint sense of reassurance settled over him, not because victory had become certain, but because the road leading toward it had finally revealed itself.
Victor closed his eyes for the briefest instant, allowing his senses to inspect the newly formed card, which in turn responded, giving him a glimpse of what to expect as a faint image.
When they opened again, every trace of uncertainty had completely disappeared as he announced, "My turn."
The top card of his Deck slid smoothly into his waiting hand.
Victor glanced at it, then at Summoned Skull, and then at Red-Eyes Black Dragon before a faint smile appeared.
Across the battlefield, Metalzoa's burning eyes narrowed.
"What's up with that annoying smile... No matter what you drew," it declared, "the outcome remains the same."
Victor finally looked back at him and played a card on the field while simply stating, "I activate Pot of Greed."
For the first time since the Shadow Game had begun, Metalzoa frowned as Victor calmly drew two cards.
His eyes scanned them only once, and the smile returned, small but certain as he declared, "The duel is over, Zoa."
For the first time, Victor deliberately addressed the Duel Spirit itself rather than the monster it inhabited.
The subtle distinction wasn't lost on Zoa.
Without waiting for a response, Victor revealed another Spell Card. "I activate Polymerization."
The familiar vortex appeared once again above the Duel Field as currents of Spirit Energy spiralled together, illuminating the battlefield.
Victor placed both monsters forward and said, "I fuse Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes Black Dragon in my hand to Fusion Summon..."
Both monsters answered the call.
Summoned Skull emerged in a burst of violet lightning, and Red-Eyes Black Dragon descended with a thunderous roar. Then, without hesitation, they entered the swirling vortex.
Their bodies dissolved.
Spirit Energy unravelled both monsters before weaving them together into an entirely new existence.
The Shadow Game reacted as the barrier surrounding the battlefield visibly trembled and even the surrounding Spirit Energy became unstable; then the vortex exploded.
A colossal silhouette emerged from the blinding light.
Its body was clad in overlapping plates of metallic silver, each one sculpted like living armour over an impossibly powerful frame. Between the gaps in those plates, dark magenta flesh pulsed with an eerie vitality, as though molten darkness flowed beneath its armoured hide. A reptilian head thrust forward with jaws lined by rows of savage fangs, while a pair of crimson eyes burned with an almost malicious intelligence. Long, bone-white horns swept back from its skull like the crown of some ancient demon.
Two immense wings unfurled behind it, their dark violet membranes stretched between jagged, skeletal supports, casting a vast shadow across the Duel Field. Every movement of its clawed limbs sent razor-sharp talons glinting in the light as an overwhelming aura of brutality radiated from its towering form.
The dragon threw back its head and unleashed a deafening roar that shook the very barrier enclosing the Shadow Game.
At the same time, Victor announced, "...Black Skull Dragon!"
[Black Skull Dragon - ATK 3200 / DEF 2500]
Metalzoa's malicious smile disappeared immediately in front of the overwhelmingly oppressive presence of Black Skull Dragon.
Zoa stared at them in silence.
Moments earlier, victory had been inevitable, but now two dragons whose combined power surpassed Metalzoa stood before him.
For the first time since descending upon Earth, doubt entered the Duel Spirit's mind.
He searched desperately for another answer, but there wasn't one.
Victor didn't give it any chance and continued before his opponent could react, "I also activate Monster Reborn and use it to Special Summon Meteor Black Dragon from my Graveyard."
Emerald light erupted from the Graveyard while the ground split apart.
Meteor Black Dragon rose once more amidst a storm of blazing meteors, reclaiming its place beside the newly summoned Black Skull Dragon.
[Meteor Black Dragon - ATK 3500 / DEF 2000]
Two massive, powerful dragons.
Their combined spiritual pressure washed across the battlefield, and even the Duel Field itself seemed to resonate beneath their presence.
Victor calmly met Zoa's gaze and declared, "And with this the victory..."
He raised one hand, "...is mine."
"Meteor Black Dragon." Victor pointed directly toward Metalzoa. "Destroy Metalzoa."
The dragon threw back its head.
Its roar reverberated throughout the Shadow Game like a declaration of judgment.
Countless blazing meteors gathered around its jaws before converging into a single devastating blast.
Metalzoa answered with its own attack.
The collision shook the entire battlefield as waves of Spirit Energy exploded outward in every direction while the Shadow Game's barrier trembled beneath the overwhelming force generated by both monsters.
For several long seconds, neither attack advanced, then Metalzoa's armoured feet began sliding backwards.
Deep furrows formed beneath them before cracks spread across the demon's reinforced armour one after another.
Its mechanical frame groaned beneath the unbearable strain.
The first plate shattered, then another, and another until the entire defence collapsed beneath the relentless barrage.
The demonic giant roared in defiance until the attack finally overwhelmed it completely, and its body disintegrated into countless fragments of Spirit Energy while the remaining shockwave passed over the possessed youth, who fell on his knees, letting out an unconscious grunt as his LP went down.
[Zoa — 1600 LP]
Despite that, Victor didn't hesitate and ordered, "Black Skull Dragon, finish this with a direct attack!"
The skeletal dragon spread its massive wings before it lunged.
Its attack struck the defenceless possessed youth directly while Zoa's remaining Life Points vanished in a single instant.
[Zoa — 0 LP]
For a brief moment there was silence, then the Shadow Game acknowledged its conclusion.
Almost immediately, Victor felt something connect to him, but not physically; instead, it was more like something spiritual.
A strand of Spirit Energy extended from the Shadow Game's barrier itself before linking to his consciousness, and a new form of knowledge flowed through it.
An understanding of a single concept, the Penalty Game.
Victor remained perfectly still as the information settled.
The loser of a Shadow Game would always receive punishment, and the victor decided what form that punishment would take.
His eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he fully understood the scope of the Penalty Game, 'There appears to be almost no limitations. The punishment could target the body, the mind, even the soul...'
Another possibility presented itself almost immediately, 'The Penalty Game does not merely punish, but it also enforces... Once judgment had been accepted by the ritual itself, even a Duel Spirit possesses no authority to resist it.'
Then his thoughts immediately drifted elsewhere, to Mephisto, the Devil who still held his mother's soul, 'If... If this ritual could someday be reproduced, strengthened and refined. Then perhaps... Perhaps even someone like Mephisto could be forced into a game whose outcome carried unavoidable consequences. Wait... It is far too early to draw any conclusions. Still...'
Victor quietly committed the possibility to memory as well as any magic capable of imposing absolute consequences warranted further investigation, then his attention shifted back toward the battlefield.
The possessed student now lay unconscious upon the ground, and standing nearby floated Zoa's true spiritual form.
Compared to moments ago, the Duel Spirit appeared considerably weaker.
Victor silently evaluated his options.
His first thought was simple, return Zoa to the Spirit World and prevent him from ever crossing into Earth again.
It would certainly solve the immediate problem, but it would also waste an opportunity to test the limits of the Penalty Game.
Victor's gaze lowered toward the unconscious student, and through a few simple diagnostic spells, he noticed that the possession and Shadow Game had damaged him severely.
His astral body and essence had become dangerously unstable.
Without intervention, there was a very real possibility the young man would never properly recover.
A talented university student reduced to an empty shell that was another waste, this time of potential.
Victor looked back toward Zoa and, coming to a decision, he said, "You possess considerable power."
The Duel Spirit remained silent as he continued, "You possess intelligence."
Victor gestured toward the unconscious youth, "And this... is how you chose to spend both."
Silence lingered between them.
Finally Victor spoke again, "It's pathetic. You possessed power capable of influencing both the Spirit World and Earth."
Victor's voice remained perfectly calm, "Intelligence sufficient to understand the consequences of your actions, yet you squandered both, corrupting a frightened youth simply because he could not resist you."
His gaze never left Zoa, "Power without purpose and knowledge without responsibility. You reduced your own existence with that much potential to little more than beastly instinct. That is why I called you pathetic."
Zoa's expression twisted with anger, "You dare—"
"I do." Victor interrupted him without raising his voice as he declared, "You desired dominion. You sought power for your own sake. You shall instead learn responsibility."
The Spirit Energy surrounding the Shadow Game stirred.
Victor understood that the ritual was listening, accepting his judgment, so he spoke clearly, "You will expend your own Spirit Energy restoring the damage inflicted upon the young man you possessed."
Zoa's eyes widened while Victor continued, "Afterwards, you shall remain by his side. You will guide him. You will protect him. You will ensure he reaches the potential you nearly destroyed. And only when you truly understand why... will your punishment end."
"No!" For the first time since the duel began, genuine panic appeared upon the Duel Spirit's face as it exclaimed, "This is unjust!"
The Shadow Game disagreed as the judgment had already been rendered, and Spirit Energy erupted from Zoa's body.
The Duel Spirit struggled, tried to resist, but it made no difference as the Penalty Game itself enforced the victor's will.
Streams of Spirit Energy flowed into the unconscious student.
Colour gradually returned to the young man's face, and his unstable aura slowly settled.
Meanwhile, Zoa became increasingly transparent; his once imposing spiritual form shrank and faded until he could no longer maintain his manifestation.
The Duel Spirit was drawn back into the card lying beside the unconscious youth before disappearing completely.
The sentence had begun.
With nothing left sustaining it, the Shadow Game dissolved, and the barrier surrounding them faded into countless particles of light.
The Duel Field vanished and the night sky above them returned.
Victor briefly examined the unconscious student one final time and noticed that his condition had fully stabilised; he would wake up in due time.
Satisfied, Victor put his Deck back into his pocket before turning toward the dormitory.
His footsteps echoed quietly across the empty campus.
After several moments of silence, he spoke to no one in particular, "That was an interesting experience.. And now I have several new research directions."
The night swallowed his words as he disappeared into the darkness.
