Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Transformation
Bloodline regression was, by the sound of it, no simple matter.
In reality, for a Mutated Celestial Fox to secretly escape from the Demon Emperors who held them captive was nearly impossible.
Unlike other Demon Beasts, a Mutated Celestial Fox was not born already mutated.
Instead, they would only begin to gradually mutate in the year they turned sixteen and reached adulthood, and the signs were exceedingly obvious.
Every Celestial Fox approaching adulthood would be placed under strict surveillance two years prior. At the slightest outward sign of mutation, they would be confined by the Demon Emperors’ subordinates to await the change.
This was related to the ancestral land of the Celestial Fox Race.
Within the ancestral land of the Celestial Fox Race stood an enormous maple tree of an unknown, ancient age.
The ancient maple’s branches and leaves blotted out the sky. Its fiery red leaves grew year-round, never withering, and every ten years, it would bloom, covering the entire tree in white flowers.
In the past, the Demon Emperors, hoping to produce more Celestial Foxes, had tried moving a portion of the population elsewhere to form new communities, thereby increasing the number of Mutated Celestial Foxes that appeared.
But if members of the Celestial Fox Race grew up anywhere else, they couldn’t even reliably acquire their Illusion Transformation talent, let alone undergo a mutation.
Only when the parents continuously resided near the ancient maple in the ancestral land, and their young did not stray too far from it from birth until adulthood, was it possible for a Celestial Fox to mutate.
Because of this restriction, the population of the Celestial Fox Race had hardly changed over several thousand years.
The Demon Emperors suspected the ancient maple possessed some kind of divine property. However, the tree bore no fruit, and other Demon Beast races that lived beneath it for extended periods showed no changes. Studies of its trunk and other materials revealed nothing special, and since they didn’t dare uproot the tree, they could only give up on the idea.
Subai’s escape from the ancestral land was half luck.
For thousands of years, a Mutated Celestial Fox would appear in the Celestial Fox Race roughly every five hundred years. The signs of mutation would only begin to appear after a Celestial Fox turned fifteen. Before that, no Celestial Fox knew if they would be the one to mutate. This pattern had held true for millennia without error.
But Subai was different. Before she was even fourteen, she had a strong premonition that she was going to mutate.
Not only that, but less than a hundred years had passed since the last Mutated Celestial Fox had appeared.
Each time a Mutated Celestial Fox was taken away by the Demon Emperors, they would allow the mutant to select a few elderly Celestial Foxes from the race to serve them.
This was partly to make the Mutated Celestial Fox more comfortable and ensure their undying loyalty to the Demon Emperors.
And partly to give the Celestial Fox Race some hope, since being chosen basically meant a life of wealth and splendor.
The attendants for the Mutated Celestial Fox from a few decades ago had already been chosen long ago. But a little over two years ago, those attendants had, for some unknown reason, angered the Mutated Celestial Fox and were executed en masse.
The Demon Emperor’s subordinates had no choice but to return to the Celestial Fox ancestral land to select a new batch of attendants.
Because the matter was urgent and sudden, and it had been less than a hundred years since that Mutated Celestial Fox’s appearance, the Demon Emperor’s subordinates were not overly strict in their screening of this new group of elderly Celestial Fox attendants.
This was how Granny Mei and Subai were able to take advantage of the chaos, replace two of the elderly Celestial Foxes, blend into the group, and secretly escape.
"Granny, give me that bloodline item from the Human Race. The Celestial Fox Bracelets can barely conceal my Demonic Power anymore."
Subai lifted one of her front paws.
On each of her four paws, she wore a dark red bracelet.
When members of the Celestial Fox Race died of old age, they would leave behind a small tuft of essential fur from their tails. This fur contained a portion of the Celestial Fox Race’s power.
Bracelets woven from this fur had the effect of aiding Illusion Transformation and concealing one’s aura.
The more powerful the Celestial Fox, the stronger the power within their fur after death.
The Celestial Fox Bracelets on Subai’s paws were the four most potent ones in the entire Celestial Fox Race.
But now, they were on the verge of being overwhelmed by Subai’s Demonic Power.
It wasn’t that Subai’s Demonic Power was immense, but that it was extraordinarily unusual. Its tier was far beyond what the deceased Demonic Foxes could match.
"There are still two months until you turn sixteen, but your mutated Demonic Power is already stronger than that of any previous Mutated Celestial Fox! If possible, it would undoubtedly be best to wait another two months before undergoing your Transformation. But unfortunately, if a large amount of your mutated Demonic Power leaks out, the Demon Emperors will find us."
Granny Mei sighed.
To prevent a Mutated Celestial Fox from escaping, the Demon Emperors had even created a Spirit Treasure specifically for detecting the Demonic Power of a Mutated Celestial Fox.
If even a slightly larger amount of mutated Demonic Power leaked out, the Spirit Treasure would detect it and lead them right to her.
Without Granny Mei’s help and the concealment from the Celestial Fox Bracelets, even if Subai had escaped, she would have been captured and brought back before long.
The solution wasn’t difficult. By using the Talent of Ten Thousand Races Transformation to change into another Race, she could consume almost all of her mutated Demonic Power.
However, the ability for Transformations of Ten Thousand Races wasn’t something that could be used at will. The mutated Demonic Power had to reach a certain level of strength.
Past Mutated Demonic Foxes had to wait until they were nearly adults, but Subai, though not yet fully grown, already possessed an unprecedentedly powerful mutated Demonic Power.
Although her mutated Demonic Power had not yet reached its limit, Subai could not afford to wait any longer.
With a flick of her hand, Granny Mei took out a lock of long hair from her storage pouch. "This is a tress of hair from a Human Race Ascension Great Cultivator," she said. "She ascended to the Upper Realm over eighteen hundred years ago and is known among the Human Race as Celestial Immortal Yu."
"Celestial Immortal Yu..."
Subai’s eyes lit up.
Since the dawn of recorded history, the Human Race and the Demon Race had been in a constant state of war. Moments of peace were rare, and most encounters ended in a fight to the death.
But to the Celestial Fox Race, the Demon Race was their true enemy. They actually held good intentions toward the Human Race, whom they had never met.
Within the Demon Race, the Celestial Fox Race would never have a chance to rise. Only by relying on the Human Race did they have any hope of escaping their predicament.
The Celestial Fox Race had always secretly monitored the state of the Human Race, and the names of some powerful human experts would occasionally reach their ears.
This was the first time Subai had heard the name Celestial Immortal Yu, but the name alone felt extraordinary.
"This is likely her honorific title among the Human Race after she became famous; her real name is lost to time. It is said that this tress of hair was a life-saving measure Celestial Immortal Yu left for her family before she ascended to the Upper Realm. When the family faced a crisis of annihilation, they could use this item in a sacrificial Array to connect to the Upper Realm, and she would send down Supreme Power and aid to help them overcome the disaster."
"About a thousand years ago, a great war broke out between the Human and Demon Races. At that time, the Demon Race had the upper hand and invaded the human Cultivation Realm. The family of Celestial Immortal Yu faced the danger of being wiped out."
"They took this item from their family treasury and performed the ritual, but perhaps Celestial Immortal Yu had already met with misfortune in the Upper Realm, for the item failed to connect. The Yu Family was almost completely annihilated, and the tress of hair, after changing hands several times, eventually fell into the possession of our Celestial Fox Race."
Granny Mei’s gaze grew distant as she recounted the history of Celestial Immortal Yu.
To earn the name Celestial Immortal and ascend to the Upper Realm spoke volumes of Celestial Immortal Yu’s abilities.
Who knew what kind of place the Upper Realm, which everyone in this world yearned for, truly was, to cause such a heroic figure to fall silent.
And for the Yu Family to be nearly annihilated less than a thousand years after Celestial Immortal Yu’s ascension was a testament to the fickle nature of fate.
"It’s better that they were wiped out. It saves me the trouble of having to explain myself if I ever run into any of the Yu Family’s descendants."
Subai said with a smile as she took the lock of Celestial Immortal Yu’s hair.
’A family with an ascended ancestor like that would surely have a portrait of her enshrined, which the entire clan would offer incense to and worship on important days.’
’I’m going to join a major Human Cultivation Sect to practice Cultivation in the future; I can’t possibly maintain an Illusion Transformation of someone else’s appearance at all times.’
’If the Yu Family were still thriving, it would be difficult to explain walking around with a face so similar to Celestial Immortal Yu’s.’
The white fox opened her mouth slightly and inhaled the tress of hair.
The next moment, the snow-white fox’s body erupted in a dazzling light, illuminating the entire cave.
But soon, the light faded, revealing the tall figure of a human female.
It wasn’t that Granny Mei had never seen a beautiful human woman before, but seeing Subai’s new human form, she couldn’t help but be momentarily stunned. Then, her brow furrowed.
Having cultivated to the Ascension realm, the power contained within Celestial Immortal Yu’s bloodline was simply too extraordinary.
And Celestial Immortal Yu was truly worthy of her title.
The current Subai not only possessed a face like a celestial immortal’s, but her entire being exuded an air of natural perfection.
She was tall and statuesque, her black hair cascading over her shoulders like a waterfall. Her features held a heroic spirit, yet she also appeared supremely elegant.
Her skin was like porcelain touched by morning dew—fine, smooth, and fair with a rosy blush, so flawlessly delicate.
Her entire body seemed flawless. This was likely what one would call a perfect physique.
’No, perhaps it would be better if there was less of that... excess flesh on her chest,’ Granny Mei thought. ’It would be more convenient for fighting.’
This was undoubtedly a body that countless people would envy, but Granny Mei felt it was far too conspicuous.
Even if the human Cultivation Realm wasn’t as treacherous as the world of the Demon Race, a body like this would inevitably attract trouble.
But fortunately, while it was hard to become beautiful, it was easy to become plain.
While her Cultivation was low, no major figures would pay her any mind, and it wouldn’t be difficult to use makeup as a disguise.
Subai looked over her new human body, quite satisfied. "This body comes from Celestial Immortal Yu. From now on, my human name will be Yu Subai!"
Granny Mei had no objections. From the moment they decided for Subai to acquire Celestial Immortal Yu’s bloodline, her new background had already been settled.
In the human Cultivation Realm, to receive a sect’s true teachings, one’s background had to be clean.
Back when the Yu Family was nearly wiped out during the Demon Race’s invasion, no one knew for sure if anyone had managed to escape in the chaos, or where they might have fled.
If necessary, Subai could claim to be a lost descendant of the Yu Family.
However, no one knew if the Yu Family’s annihilation had been secretly plotted by their enemies. It was best to avoid using this identity if possible.
"Next, we will go to that small human town nearby and live there for a few years. We’ll use the humans’ Heaven and Earth Sealing Spirit Array to completely purge the residual Demonic Power from your body. After that, you can enter a human sect to begin your Cultivation."
Granny Mei said.
Human sects have various methods for detecting Demonic Power to prevent spies from the Demon Race from infiltrating.
Until her Demonic Power was completely gone, Subai could not enter a human sect.
Normally, it would not be easy for Subai to completely disperse the residual Demonic Power in her body, but with the Human Race’s Guardian Array, the Heaven and Earth Sealing Spirit Array, the matter became much simpler.
Subai could also use these few years to learn human customs and etiquette, lest she give herself away and arouse suspicion after joining a sect.
"Is the Human Race’s Guardian Array really as formidable as the legends say?"
Subai couldn’t help but ask, her curiosity piqued.
