I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 45: Is a Red Lizard’s Life Really That Dramatic? The bluish moonlight shone from high above, filling the whole Winterborne estate below with its glow. Only one room stayed dark, its curtains pulled shut against the light.
In his new room, lit only by a few candles, Magna couldn’t force himself to sleep on his first night there. He was already growing paranoid, feeling like danger could appear at any moment.
His heightened awareness of nearby presences only made things worse.
He could clearly feel the maid standing right outside his door.
Just an hour ago, the one keeping watch had left, and someone else had taken over for the night shift. That meant Magna would have to try sleeping with this feeling until morning came.
At least the presence that had been outside his window hadn’t returned. That much was a small relief.
There was no switch to turn this ability off. But he did find that thinking about something else could distract his mind, and it worked fairly well.
This time though, he found himself sinking into deep thought instead. There were too many things about this world he wanted to think through and figure out, and it ended up keeping him awake all the same.
After tossing and turning in bed for a few hours, he finally decided it made no sense to waste the whole night like this. He got up.
He looked at the key sitting on the table beside his bed, picked it up, and left the room.
The moment he opened the door, the maid standing attentively outside noticed him and bowed her head. "Young Lord."
The title felt strange to Magna, though not too strange. He was fairly used to hearing titles like that from the story-based games he used to play.
"Hello. Nice night, isn’t it?" He had no idea how to respond properly, so he just started a casual conversation instead.
The maid seemed thrown off by the pointless question, but answered anyway. "Yes, it is. Is there anything I can help you with?"
She looked quite young, maybe in her early twenties, and clearly inexperienced. That worked in his favor.
"I want to leave the mansion." Magna said bluntly, testing the waters with his real intention, curious how she would react.
To his surprise, the maid answered without hesitation. "Sure. Would you like me to show you the way?"
’So I really can leave whenever I want?’ The maid clearly wasn’t here to keep him under watch, since she made no attempt to talk him out of it at all.
He turned to his second goal, holding up the key in his hand. "Actually, I want to visit the study first. Where is it?"
The maid answered again without any objection. "Lady Celeste’s study, right? Please follow me." She started walking down the corridor.
She had clearly been given instructions about this beforehand.
Magna followed quietly, staying one step behind her, as the two of them passed through long corridors lit with candles and moonlight coming through the windows and finally stopped in front of a door on the same floor.
The door looked just like any other wooden door in the mansion. The only difference was that it had no handle, just a keyhole. It made Magna pause for a moment. "Is this really a Witch’s study?"
The maid didn’t mind the odd question. "Yes, this is Lady Celeste’s study."
"Is she inside? Or anyone else?"
The maid shook her head slowly. "I don’t have that information."
Magna didn’t want to run into anyone once he stepped inside, so he tried to sense any presence within, and listened closely for any sound. Only once he was sure no one was there did he take the key out of his pocket.
"Thank you for your help." He thanked the maid, then slid the key into the lock and turned it.
With a slow creak, the door opened, revealing a room a little bigger than his own bedroom. Wasn’t as big as he expected.
Both walls were lined floor to ceiling with shelves, packed almost completely full with books.
Directly across from the door stood a desk, facing it, covered in books of its own. Behind the desk was a floor to ceiling window, and the azure moonlight outside poured in through it, lighting up the whole room.
In front of the desk sat a wide sofa, and on it sat a small figure, holding a book.
’Is my presence sense actually not working well?’ Magna thought, frowning as he looked at the small figure.
It was Faye, so focused on her reading that she hadn’t even noticed him come in.
Until he opened the door, Magna hadn’t been able to sense her at all. Only now could he feel her presence, and it made him wonder if his last mutation had failed, or if the room itself was shielded by some kind of spell.
Since he didn’t want to turn back now, he simply stepped inside and closed the door behind him, right in front of the maid still waiting in the hall.
He turned to look at Faye again. Her eyes were still glued to the book.
’Should I just ignore her?’ Magna thought, turning his attention to the shelves instead.
There were plenty of books, but fewer than he had expected from a Witch’s study. Only around two or three hundred lined the rows. Most had blue covers, though a few rows held red, yellow, or white ones as well.
Luckily, he didn’t need to open each one to figure out what it was about. Every spine carried a single sentence describing its contents.
He looked at the first book on the first row. It read Theoretical Principles of Spellcasting.
It was the same book he had read back in the cave, which left him both surprised and relieved.
Back then, he had only gotten through a few pages, never finding the time to finish it. Now he could spend the night reading the rest.
He picked up the book and turned around, looking for a comfortable place to sit and read.
But his attention was pulled away by a weeping sound coming from Faye.
When he looked over, he saw she was crying quietly, tears falling from her eyes.
’Is she reading some kind of drama novel?’ He couldn’t make sense of it at all. He walked over quietly, stepping around behind the sofa to see what was written on the pages.
Faye was still too caught up in her reading and her crying to notice him at all.
When Magna finally saw what the book was about, he raised an eyebrow. It was about red lizards.
Their daily habits, their anatomy, their strengths and weaknesses, all of it was explained in careful detail, alongside beautifully drawn illustrations.
’What is there to get emotional about?’ Magna still couldn’t understand why the girl was crying.
But the way she quietly tried to hold back her sobs, her eyes slowly turning red, looked so pitiful that he found himself starting to feel bad for her.
Remembering her jelly cookies too, and still feeling like he owed her an apology, he decided to at least ask what was wrong.
"Hey." He called out from behind her, just to catch her attention.
The moment Faye heard his voice, she let out a small shriek and shot up off the sofa, tripping over her own feet and landing flat on the floor with a loud thud.
