I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 55: One Punch and It’s Done"What, are you surprised? Ready to give up?" Titus grinned, clearly enjoying himself at the sight of the kid’s stunned face.
"Just give me a second, I’m thinking." Magna replied, still trying to make sense of whatever law of physics had just been broken in front of him.
He had one real shot at forcing Titus to use a spell, and it had come down to a single surprise attack at top speed.
But now that even that hadn’t worked, he had to rethink his whole plan from scratch.
’Should I just ask him directly?’ If he asked, there was a good chance Titus would show him how to use a spell anyway.
In the end, what they wanted was for Magna to want to become a Shadow, so they would take any chance to impress him or leave him in awe.
But somewhere deep inside, Magna’s competitive streak wouldn’t let him take the easy way out. He didn’t want to give up that easily.
’Okay, just one hit. Even a scratch would do.’ He finally made up his mind and got back into position.
"So you want to try again... Come on then." Titus said, satisfied. He would have been genuinely disappointed if the kid had just given up.
So far, Magna had four mutations that directly affected his combat ability.
In order, they were, doubling all his senses, gaining every trait of an assassin, boosting his stamina and endurance five times over, and finally, the speed of a red lizard.
All he needed to do now was combine them properly into his fighting style.
Instead of attacking right away, he first used every one of his senses to scan his surroundings.
The sun was coming in at a slight angle from behind him, the soft wind carried a light chill that quickly cooled the sweat on his skin, and the ground beneath him felt firm, packed hard, but soft enough that his feet could still kick up dirt.
Only once his mind was fully ready did his body move.
Just like before, he lunged forward, appearing in front of Titus in an instant.
"Same tactic? I expected more from you." Titus muttered, sounding disappointed as he raised his right hand again, aiming to grab him by the throat.
The same scene played out just like before, Magna’s dagger stopping an inch from his chest as Titus’s fingers were already closing in around his thin neck.
But this time, something different happened at the very last second.
Just like before, Magna froze his own movement at the last possible moment. But instead of pulling straight back, he spun his body, slipping past the hand reaching for him, and redirected his other dagger straight at Titus’s exposed leg.
Seeing this, Titus’s blue eyes lit up, a grin spreading across his face.
He immediately moved his other hand, trying to catch the dagger heading for his leg.
But at the last second, Magna cut his motion short again, in a way that felt almost impossible. He took another half step back, slipping free of that hand too, but instead of retreating fully, he kept his body’s momentum going, spun again, and lunged with his other dagger, this time aiming for the opposite leg.
When Titus’s fingers closed around empty air again, his grin only grew wider, shifting into something closer to pure excitement.
He pushed his speed up another notch and tried again, this time reaching for the arm holding the dagger aimed at his left leg.
But the same thing happened all over again.
It was as if Magna could predict a full second ahead of time.
Every single time, he stopped his attack at the last possible moment, pulled back half a step to slip out of Titus’s reach, spun his body around, and lunged again with the other dagger, only to repeat the exact same pattern.
To Celeste, watching from the sidelines, the fight had already started to look like Titus trying to catch a fly buzzing through the air, while Magna’s small body kept blurring back and forth, his daggers always stopping just an inch away from actually cutting him.
Even in her serene state, she was struggling to keep up with his movements with her eyes alone.
Still, she managed to catch two things clearly, and both left her genuinely stunned.
’He’s using the sun’s position to partly block Titus’s line of sight. And the way he’s using the ground itself...’
Every time Magna moved, he made sure to position himself right in line with the sunlight hitting Titus’s view, keeping him constantly distracted by that glare from above.
As for his footwork, he wasn’t really stepping anymore. His feet were sliding smoothly across the dirt instead, letting him react and move at an incredible speed without ever wasting a single second lifting them off the ground.
Then Celeste noticed something else, something that wasn’t just shocking this time, but genuinely terrifying.
As Titus kept reaching for Magna, the grin on his face kept growing, and his eyes kept widening more and more.
’This is bad. I need to stop him now.’
But it was too late. She had been too focused on watching Magna, and she realized it a moment too late.
A loud BANG suddenly echoed across the entire training ground, and the next thing she saw was Magna’s body flying backward through the air.
He was hit so hard by Titus’s fist that his body bounced across the ground several times before finally crashing into a training dummy and coming to a stop.
"Titus!" She screamed, finally breaking into a run toward where Magna had fallen.
The incantation was already flowing from her lips, ensuring the life-saving spell would be ready by the time she reached his side.
Titus froze too, the wide, excited grin on his face suddenly disappearing as he realized what he had just done.
"Shit..." He muttered, breaking into a run as well, though somewhere in the back of his mind, he was already almost certain the kid was done for.
