"It’s cold..." Magna muttered in bed, his consciousness slowly coming back to him.

He was practically freezing right now, unable to move his body freely at all. Still, he forced his eyes open and tried pushing himself up in bed.

’Why does it feel like my body is freezing?’ The whole mutation had started with heat burning through him. Now that it was over, it felt strange to have the exact opposite, a cold sensation wrapping around his entire body instead.

Other than that, he couldn’t feel anything else different about himself.

Wanting to confirm the mutation had actually worked, he called up his status panel.

Mana 0%

"0 percent?" He muttered, confused, before realizing it was just showing his current mana reserve.

Then a frown crept onto his face as a bad feeling started building inside him.

He waited a while, hoping it would start rising on its own. From what he had learned, Witches naturally regenerated their mana over time, even if slowly.

But as the minutes passed, and a full hour went by, that number just sat there at zero, painfully unmoving.

’No, no, this can’t be right. Was all of that for nothing?’ He thought, unable to accept that all the pain he had just gone through had been for nothing, just so the status panel could add a useless indicator.

Thinking back on the whole process, the feeling of his internal organs burning, followed by new ones forming in their place, he was certain none of that had been some kind of hallucination.

But aside from that strange cold wrapped around his whole body, there was still nothing else he could actually feel.

If the system hadn’t given him an organ capable of producing mana, then what was even the point of showing it on his stat panel at all?

For a small chance, he thought maybe he could gain mana through mana-rich food, but again, that was something so rare. How could he even find it?

Ask Celeste? What could he even say? I need to regenerate my mana, so give me some of those valuable herbs?

Then, as if mocking him, his stomach growled, reminding him he had just burned through every bit of energy for nothing, and now it wanted him to fill it right back up.

Accepting the harsh reality that he might have just gotten scammed out of all that energy, he dragged himself out of bed and started walking toward the door.

Even his joints felt frozen solid, stiff, and painful to move, as if the feeling might never fully go away.

’It’s not just a scam. Did I actually give myself a permanent debuff?’ He sank deeper into despair, wondering if he had just messed up his own anatomy for good.

He cracked the door open just enough to show part of his face and spoke to the maid waiting outside. "Can you bring me some food, please?"

Maybe, just maybe, if he ate something, his body would at least return to normal.

After ordering his food, he went back to bed and pulled the blanket over himself, hoping to feel even a little warmer.

A few minutes later, there was a knock at his door again, and the maid returned, pushing in a large trolley.

"Thank you." Magna got out of bed, careful not to let the maid notice how sick he currently looked, since he didn’t want word of his condition reaching Celeste.

Once the door closed behind her, he wrapped the blanket back around himself and walked over to the trolley to eat.

He picked up a spoon and dipped it into the soup, its steam rising invitingly, hoping it might help push back the freezing feeling at least a little.

The warm soup slid down his throat, and for a moment, the sensation left him feeling relieved. Then Gaia’s mechanical voice cut through that relief, turning it into pure confusion.

[Energy particles detected...]

[Converting nutrients into mana...]

The message had changed. What usually said energy now said mana instead.

Shocked, Magna said out loud right away. "Status."

There it was. His mana stat had actually gone up.

He immediately dipped his spoon back in and kept eating, wanting to make sure it wasn’t just some one-time fluke.

As he ate, he kept an eye on his status screen, watching his mana stat climb steadily with every spoonful of warm soup that went down.

The freezing sensation in his body also started fading the more he ate, though he couldn’t tell if it was the warm soup helping, or the rising mana causing it.

By the time he finished the whole bowl, his mana had already reached 0.4%, and his body temperature had nearly returned to normal.

"So now I convert nutrients into mana instead of energy, or..." He muttered, tossing the blanket off to the side.

He tried to make sense of what was actually happening.

The current situation had one bad side and one good side.

Being able to gain mana from ordinary food was definitely a good thing. But it also meant he was no longer gaining the regular energy he needed to charge Gaia and trigger new options.

Actually he could faintly feel that familiar energy building inside his body while eating, which made him guess he was actually gaining both at once.

’Hmm, maybe it just changed its name from energy to mana.’

To be more sure, he quickly finished off the rest of the meal.

He could genuinely feel that same familiar energy building inside him just like always, which confirmed he had been right.

Once he finished everything, he checked his current mana one more time.

While his mana sat at 1.5, the energy he could feel building inside him had also filled up, just by a small amount.

He usually ate 5 or 6 meals like this a day, which meant it would take him about 13 days at most to reach 100%.

If he was right, mana and energy really were the same thing after all, so he could trigger another one of Gaia’s options once it reached 100%.

Keeping that thought in mind, he decided it was finally time to try something he had been waiting a long time for.

Now that he actually had enough mana built up inside him, he could finally attempt to cast a spell.
