I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World

Chapter 65: Going to the Forest with a Troublemaker

After eating with the maids in the kitchen, Magna returned to his room to practice some more.

With his mana sitting at 12.6% after eating his fill, he had plenty to spare for practice.

He didn’t want to spend too much though, since he still needed mana to trigger Gaia’s options again. He kept it to a minimum, only burning through another 0.6% before he finally went to sleep.

The next morning, he woke up early with plans to head into the forest.

He took care of his morning routine, showered quickly, changed into fresh clothes, and went straight to the kitchen to grab breakfast, planning to ask about the trip while he was there.

When he arrived, the usual maids were there, along with a middle-aged man he didn’t recognize.

"Young Lord, we were waiting for you." Victoria, the headmaid, walked over right away, then gestured toward the man. "This is Harlan. He lives in the village north of the city. He’s a very experienced hunter, so today he’ll be taking you into the forest."

Magna looked the man over.

He carried every trait you’d expect from a real hunter.

Black hair, dark brown eyes with a sharp, alert look, tanned skin that clearly came from long hours spent under the sun, and clothes that fit the part too, leather boots, dark pants, and a slightly worn, yellowed white shirt.

He even had a bow and arrows hanging from his back, as well as a dagger at his waist.

"Young Lord." He bowed his head respectfully, though it did nothing to soften his imposing hunter’s presence.

"Hello, please call me Magna." He said, offering his hand for a handshake.

Harlan seemed to find the gesture a little strange, hesitating for a moment before laughing and shaking his hand in return.

"I heard you want to go hunt for some fruit in the forest. Hunting’s my specialty, so you can trust me on this." He seemed friendly enough.

"So when do we leave?" Magna didn’t even bother to hide his childlike eagerness.

"Not so fast, eat your breakfast first." Victoria said with a laugh, then added. "Lady Celeste is already arranging a carriage for you so you can eat while it gets ready."

Of course Celeste already knew about this.

Magna didn’t mind, though, as long as she wasn’t going to stop him from going out whenever he wanted.

If anything, this actually worked in his favor, since it meant free transportation and protection, courtesy of the Winterborne family.

That protection, of course, only counted as long as it didn’t come from Titus.

With that man around, Magna would have a much harder time freely wandering the forest in search of mana-rich food.

After finishing breakfast and hearing the carriage was ready, Harlan and Magna made their way out of the mansion toward the outer garden.

At the estate’s entrance stood a large carriage, pulled by two white horses, already waiting for them.

Luckily for Magna, neither Titus nor Celeste was anywhere in sight. There was, however, an uninvited guest joining them instead.

"Hey, hey, I heard those fluffy white rabbits come from the forest. Do you think we’ll find one?" Faye was hopping around beside him, as hyperactive as ever.

She was wearing her blue Witch robe, her long blonde hair flowing freely behind her.

She also had some kind of pink backpack strapped to her back, its contents something Magna could only guess at.

’Why does she have to come along?’ He felt genuinely helpless, wondering if Faye might end up being even more trouble than Titus.

Still, watching her bounce around, unable to stand still from excitement, he couldn’t quite bring himself to be annoyed at her.

She was just a sheltered kid who had spent most of her life inside the mansion walls, so apart from her trial, this was probably one of her rare chances to actually get outside.

Using his presence sense and every enhanced sense he had, Magna tried to check if Titus was lurking nearby too, fairly certain the psychotic father had to be hiding in the shadows somewhere if Faye was coming along.

But he couldn’t sense him anywhere at all.

Turning back to Faye, he said. "We’re not going hunting, just collecting fruits and vegetables."

That didn’t dampen her excitement one bit. "What about those walking birds? The ones too dumb to even fly?"

While Harlan tried to figure out what animal she was even talking about, Magna answered. "Those are dodo birds, and they can’t fly, not because they’re stupid, just because their wings never evolved for flying."

Faye’s face lit up with an "Ohh" of understanding, though she clearly had no idea what evolution actually meant.

"Young Lady, Young Lord, should we get going now?" Harlan urged them, since the sun was already starting to climb higher in the sky.

He was feeling a bit tense too. Being responsible for Magna alone had already been enough pressure, and now having another noble child tagging along only added to his stress.

Still, thinking about the reward waiting for him at the end of this job, enough to support his family for months, was enough to push that stress down and replace it with a sharp sense of duty instead.

"Right, sorry. Let’s go." Magna smiled apologetically, nudging Faye toward the carriage before climbing in himself, with Harlan following last.

Once the driver shut the door, he climbed up to his seat and gave the reins a gentle shake, setting the horses off toward their destination.

From one of the mansion’s windows, Celeste watched the carriage pull away, a warm smile on her face.

As happy as she looked seeing her daughter so excited, there was still a small worry sitting inside her.

This was the first time she was letting her daughter go this far from her.

Part of her wanted Faye to start standing on her own feet and finally get out and explore the world. But another part of her, the part still guided by pure motherly instinct, still saw her as nothing more than a defenseless child.

She let out a sigh, trying to ease at least some of that lingering worry. "Titus will be there, so I don’t need to worry this much."

No matter how dense the man could be sometimes, he was still a powerful Shadow and a reliable guardian. Whatever danger they might run into out there, she was confident her husband would handle it without any trouble.

Still, for some reason, she couldn’t quite shake that faint unease sitting in the back of her mind.
