I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 80: You’re hiding something"Is this the boy?" Rowena’s eyes scanned Magna from head to toe, taking in every detail, which seemed like trying to carve it into her memory.
For a moment, Magna felt his instincts screaming at him to back off and run from that intimidating stare.
Renna’s gaze wasn’t much different, studying him carefully beneath her wide hat, her arms crossed over her chest.
Even though Magna felt intimidated, he didn’t back down, and he started studying them right back with his own eyes.
His eyes lingered on Renna a little longer than the rest.
’She’s pretty hot.’
Even as an antisocial person, he was still a man, so he wasn’t completely unmoved by seeing a woman around his age. At least his mental age.
Her earrings especially gave her fierce look an extra bit of charm, and the small star-shaped mark under her eye was the perfect finishing touch.
If Magna had seen someone like her in his previous life, he would have definitely designed a character in one of his games based entirely on her.
"I still had my doubts, but..." Rowena finally finished sizing up the boy, her warm demeanor returning as she spoke. "Now that I see you, I definitely believe you’re a brave child."
"Thank you." Magna replied, though he felt a little lost, not having been part of the conversation before this.
Seeing his casual reaction, Rowena burst out laughing and turned to her granddaughter. "You see him, Renna? What do you think? Would you go for someone like him?"
Still studying Magna, Renna lowered her head at the words, hiding her face under her hat again. "Your jokes keep picking the wrong moments, grandmother. And what makes you think I need a Shadow at all?"
Rowena waved her hand, clearly displeased by the response. "It’s not my fault you’re so picky about men."
Renna was already a 5th Trial Witch at twenty years old, but she still hadn’t found a Shadow to contract with.
So her grandmother kept trying to push her toward someone whenever the chance came up, not caring about the place or the timing at all.
Rowena’s gaze drifted back to her daughter lying on the bed, her eyes softening. "You are just like your mother. Look what her stubbornness turned her into. If only she hadn’t insisted on facing danger alone."
Morrigan, after losing her Shadow years ago during her last trial, had refused to form a contract with another one ever since.
While the two Cinders were caught up in their small family drama, Magna took slow steps toward Faye and leaned in to whisper in her ear.
"Hey, do you know what their bloodline trait is?"
He had already figured out the Cinder family specialized in fire spells, tied to the Matriarch of Death.
Knowing that every family had its own distinct bloodline trait, it made him curious.
While he waited for an answer, Faye only looked at him with furrowed brows and shushed him to keep quiet.
’Seriously, what’s wrong with her?’ Magna felt his pride take another hit, being treated like a child by her for the second time in one day.
He also noticed Faye occasionally shooting a tense, pointed glance toward Renna, which made him wonder if there was some kind of history between them that he wasn’t aware of.
"So, Magna." Rowena’s attention turned back to him. "I’ve already heard most of it, but there are still a few things I can’t quite piece together. Could you tell me your side of what happened as well?"
Under her stare again, Magna felt that same intimidating pressure, though he could tell it wasn’t really aimed at him personally.
He began explaining everything in detail, starting from the moment he found himself in that dimension after touching the hat, all the way to when he walked out through the hut door carrying both Faye and Morrigan’s bodies on his shoulders.
As interesting and praiseworthy as his story was, there was still one part that Rowena and the others couldn’t quite make sense of.
It was Renna who finally voiced it. "So you want us to believe you just ran off carrying two people in your arms from that monster?"
Her crimson eyes stared at him fiercely, the words sounding far more like an accusation than a question.
Though her tone and the way she asked it clearly weren’t appropriate, everyone in the room still wanted to hear his answer.
According to Faye, the last thing she remembered before losing consciousness was the Faceless Witch closing in on them, close enough that they were about to be caught any second.
Then came Magna throwing them aside, and after that her mind had gone completely blank.
"Like I said, once I felt we were about to get caught, I threw them aside and made a split second decision to face her myself." Magna explained again, shrugging his shoulders, sticking to half the truth while leaving out the part about casting a spell.
"Liar." Renna had no reason to believe that.
Her mother had been a 9th Trial Witch, and even she had lost to the Faceless Witch and ended up captured and trapped in that dimension. There was no way a child like Magna, who wasn’t even a Shadow yet, could have fought a monster like that one on one and then escaped.
"I’m not lying. I don’t know if the Faceless Witch was just weakened from being hit by Lady Morrigan’s two spells, or if she just wasn’t taking me seriously and was toying with me, but somehow I made her retreat, and then I ran."
Magna had started breaking into a cold sweat, though he tried not to show it, since lying was never something he was good at.
’What more is there to question, just believe it already,’ he thought to himself.
While everyone else stayed quiet, choosing just to listen, Renna pressed him again.
"Even weakened, even just toying with you, a Witch at that level isn’t someone you can fight and force to retreat. You’re hiding something."
