Chapter 210: Chapter 210: Encountering a Human Soul

Under the cover of night, Bai Mo arrived with his men.

A sharp screech echoed from ahead, and faint shadows darted about.

Lanshan, who was at the front, felt his expression change.

"As expected of Sect Disciples, to cause such a commotion."

As the group drew closer, they saw men lying on both sides of the road.

Their faces were deathly pale, as if they’d been drained dry in a brothel for two days straight.

Though it was unclear if they were dead or alive, the faces of the onlookers grew grim.

Just as they united against the powerful clans in the city, they relied on banding together when bullied by other groups in the wilds.

One of the men drew his bow. He let an arrow fly, its head whistling as it soared through the air and burst into a shower of sparks, shooting straight toward the mass of flickering shadows ahead.

POOF!

As the flames scattered, the shadows let out bloodcurdling wails that made one’s heart pound with fear.

But in just an instant, the shadows fled in disarray, scattering in all directions.

The sinister wind finally ceased, revealing several figures lying on the ground.

Some lay face-up to the sky, others were face-down on the ground. All were silent.

Everyone was shocked.

"What happened here?"

Only Bai Mo gave the tree stump a thoughtful glance before leading his men closer.

Lanshan rushed ahead and checked for breathing.

"They’re still alive."

With a wave of his hand, several men with ropes stepped forward and crudely tied the figures up.

Throughout the process, not a single one of them woke up.

"No external injuries,"

Lanshan said.

He then looked at Bai Mo. "What should we do with them?"

They were from a sect, and though they had their own schemes, they hadn’t attacked Bai Mo’s group.

The Loose Cultivators from the city didn’t have the nerve to dispose of Sect Disciples.

Bai Mo pondered for a moment, exchanged a look with An Caiwei beside him, and said:

"See if they have anything valuable on them. You all came out here, so you can’t leave empty-handed."

"We can just dump them somewhere far away afterward."

The men were overjoyed.

Even the most unremarkable belongings of a Sect Disciple could be a rare treasure for people like them.

Operating on the principle of leaving nothing behind, the men, in a flash, stripped the Sect Disciple Cultivators clean, leaving them in nothing but their undergarments.

A moment later, Lanshan returned with several books and a large banner, handing them to Bai Mo.

The books were clearly sect scriptures. Although the men coveted them, they knew they couldn’t touch such things.

If they did, and it was discovered later, someone might come looking for them to hold them accountable.

Beside them, An Caiwei excitedly took the large banner and waved it around a few times, but there was no response.

Unwilling to give up, she infused it with Spiritual Power, but besides summoning a few wisps of sinister wind, nothing else happened.

"It really is an unorthodox Magical Artifact. What a useless thing!"

she said in frustration.

Bai Mo flipped through the scriptures and found a name on the last page of a book titled *Yin Soul Scripture*.

Li Tianxin of the Yin Puppet Sect.

He thought for a moment but was sure he had never heard of this sect’s name.

Bai Mo let it go, casting a subtle glance back the way they came.

"Alright, that’s all. We shouldn’t linger at the foot of Celestial Barrier Mountain so late at night. Let’s head back."

This was something families in Immortal Arrival City often told their children.

Even a tough man like Lanshan still abided by it.

After dividing the belongings of the Sect Disciples, the men were content, feeling as though they’d just picked up some copper coins on a casual stroll.

As for the men lying by the roadside, those who recognized them would naturally carry them back.

"They’re not dead, but they’re in a pitiful state. With their backs aching and legs weak, they won’t be able to fight for a while."

"I’m afraid they’ll need at least two months to recover!"

The group departed, chatting and laughing.

As for the Cultivators from the Yin Puppet Sect, a few men carried them off and tossed them into the nearby wilderness.

They watched as the bodies landed in the calf-high weeds, their figures completely concealed.

"Don’t mountain wolves occasionally roam this area?"

one of the men suddenly said, scratching his head with a grin.

The others laughed as well.

"We’ll see if their luck holds out."

They also left, laughing and talking, and quickly caught up with the main group.

Little did they know, after they were gone, several yin souls emerged from the bodies of the Yin Puppet Sect Cultivators and lay in wait in the surroundings, perfectly still.

After walking some distance, Bai Mo saw Brother Wu hidden behind a tree by the road, laughing and talking with his fellow disciples.

Lanshan and his men were wondering who the two people were, appearing here so late at night, when they saw Bai Mo go up to greet them.

Their hearts skipped a beat as they looked at Bai Mo.

Bai Mo waved his hand.

"You all head back first. I’m going to stay and watch with my senior brother."

The members of the Demon Hunting Team immediately understood something was afoot. They turned, shouting amongst themselves as if nothing was wrong, and walked away.

An Caiwei handed the large banner to Brother Wu.

"Here, an unorthodox and evil artifact."

Brother Wu smiled.

"This thing is not as simple as it looks. It costs a small fortune to refine."

As he said this, he formed a blade with his fingers, slashed the banner’s surface, rolled it up, and handed it to a junior brother beside him.

Then, they all looked toward the distant tree stump.

After a brief wait, a blurry figure suddenly emerged from behind the stump. The figure was not tall, its back was hunched, and it held a wooden staff.

It was a mystery where he had been hiding; the stump, which was not even as tall as a person, had somehow concealed him completely.

After emerging, the blurry figure crouched down and fumbled on the ground for a moment before pulling a motionless person out from under it.

Judging by the clothes, it was another Cultivator from the Yin Puppet Sect.

An Caiwei was very surprised.

"What is that?"

Bai Mo also looked toward Brother Wu.

The latter pondered for a moment, then said softly:

"It’s a remnant soul. I can’t tell if it’s human or demon."

"However, its aura is pure and clear. It doesn’t seem to have committed any evil deeds."

Bai Mo hesitated, but still asked:

"So, should we..."

Brother Wu chuckled.

"We’ll just go over and say hello. We’re going to be neighbors from now on, so it’s best to get acquainted."

As he spoke, his body flickered and suddenly vanished from the spot.

An Caiwei exclaimed in surprise, "Ah!"

"Did Brother Wu really master the earth-burrowing technique?"

The disciple who had come with Brother Wu laughed.

"Don’t praise him too much. He’s only learned the basics, and already he’s too lazy to walk."

With that, he led Bai Mo and An Caiwei openly toward the figure.

「...」

The blurry figure took a breath, wiping nonexistent sweat from its brow.

He had an ancient face and seemed very weary.

"Youngsters these days are so clueless, so devoid of respect. Back in my day..."

Before he could finish his muttering, his eyes suddenly sharpened, and he swung the wooden staff in his hand behind him.

"Showing off your earth-burrowing tricks in front of this old man?"

The staff whistled through the air, crashing down just as Brother Wu emerged from the ground.

At the critical moment, Brother Wu arched his back, narrowly avoiding the overhead strike with a perfect backbend.

Seeing the blurry figure turn and prepare to swing again, he quickly shouted,

"Senior, please wait!"

"We are your neighbors, just here for a visit!"

Just then, Bai Mo and the other two arrived.

The blurry figure took two wary steps back, stopped, and scanned its surroundings.

When it saw Bai Mo, its ancient face softened slightly, and it gave a gentle nod.

"I recognize you. You’ve been here before."

Bai Mo was taken aback for a second, then quickly replied:

"This junior did indeed weave a grass ring when I came up the mountain before. It is my honor that Senior remembers me!"

The old man shook his head.

"I recognize everyone who crosses my path."

"You lot weren’t up to any good, watching the show from a distance."

"Did you think this old man’s eyes are so bad I couldn’t see you?"

Brother Wu laughed. "Senior jests."

"We didn’t arrive early enough to witness Senior’s magnificent display of power."
