Immortal Cultivation: Starting from a Pharmacy Apprentice
Chapter 241: Commotion in the CityChapter 241: Chapter 241: Commotion in the City
Qin Wen was rather baffled.
"Old sir, we’re swamped with work all day long here."
"Where would we find the energy to raise a dog?"
The old man shivered as a gust of wind blew past and quickly ducked into the shop.
"That’s where you’re wrong."
"This pup of mine is no ordinary dog. It can identify medicinal herbs."
"A dog’s nose is nothing like a human’s. Just think, taking it into the mountains with you from now on... that would be incredible."
The old man said, a smug look on his face.
But Qin Wen gave him a faint, unreadable smile.
"Then may I ask, old sir, how much are you selling this dog for?"
"One hundred Spirit Stones. I won’t sell for less than that!"
"Not worth it," Qin Wen said, shaking his head.
’What are the conditions in Celestial Barrier Mountain?’
’Demon Beasts run rampant, and it’s teeming with snakes, insects, rats, and ants.’
’Bringing this pup into the mountains... whether it can find any herbs is one thing, but what if it gets frightened to death by the aura of a Demon Beast? That would be a disaster.’
The old man looked at Qin Wen’s firm expression and hesitated.
"Then what price do you think is fair, sir?"
"Twenty."
A nameless rage suddenly ignited in the old man. His stooped back straightened, and his whole body trembled.
"What a heartless lowball!"
"Sir, that price is just insulting!"
Just as Qin Wen was about to speak, he suddenly saw Xu Ruyuan strolling over from outside with his hands behind his back, looking quite leisurely.
"What’s all this fuss about?"
"Why such a temper?"
The moment the old man saw Xu Ruyuan, he immediately pulled him into the shop.
"My friend, you be the judge!"
Xu Ruyuan was completely bewildered. He only registered that this old fellow was surprisingly strong before he was yanked into the shop.
After learning the whole story, his eyes lit up.
"This is a fine dog."
The old man clapped his hands, saying excitedly:
"Isn’t it just?"
But Xu Ruyuan rubbed his chin, exchanged a glance with Wei An, and then added:
"However... that price, my good man, really isn’t fair..."
The old man, holding the puppy in one arm, pulled everyone further into the shop.
"Come, come, let me tell you all about this dog. Wait ’til you hear, and you’ll know it’s really worth the price..."
「At the same time.」
Bai Mo had finished explaining the Winter Storage Skill.
The group of men, some standing and some sitting, furrowed their brows, struggling to memorize and comprehend it.
Bai Mo watched them without a word, raising his teacup and draining it in one gulp.
SLAP!
A man who had been deep in thought with his head down suddenly slapped his thigh.
"This just goes to show why Alchemist Bai could enter a great sect! His brain just works better. A simple guy like me, Old Zhang, just can’t wrap my head around it!"
Someone else nodded in deep agreement.
Bai Mo just smiled.
"There’s no rush. As long as you’ve gained something, you can reflect on it on your own later."
"Right, wait here with peace of mind. In half a year, people from the sect will come to escort you all to the gates of the Xuandao Sect."
Hearing Bai Mo’s last words, everyone’s expression turned solemn.
"We will wait respectfully in the city."
Lanshan waved his hand and glanced at the sky.
"I know you’re all busy men, so I won’t keep you."
"Hurry up and get going. I don’t have anything good to offer you here."
The men laughed and called him stingy, but they still left one after another.
Lanshan then turned to Bai Mo.
"It’s getting late. Allow me to escort Shopkeeper Bai back."
Bai Mo gave him a surprised look.
"Why the need?"
Lanshan shook his head.
"Things haven’t been peaceful outside the city lately. You may not know, but even within the city, a prominent family was investigated and had their assets seized by Cultivators from Mountain View Tower."
"What happened?"
"I heard it was out of greed. They assisted in the Zhu family Castle matter, providing the culprits with many materials and conveniences."
"Right, the Zhu family Castle is..."
Bai Mo cut him off. "I know of this matter."
"I just didn’t expect the trail to lead back into the city."
Lanshan said calmly:
"That family didn’t know the other party’s background, but they probably suspected something was wrong. Their downfall was their greed; they were too bold."
"Now, all their former Dao slaves have been divided up among others."
As the two walked, Lanshan thought for a moment, then asked about some of his own lingering questions.
"Actually, there were a few things from just now that I didn’t quite understand..."
Lanshan’s courtyard wasn’t far from the shop.
The short journey left Lanshan with a sense of regret that it was over too soon. He managed to throw out only a few key questions, seeking answers from Bai Mo.
Bai Mo explained in detail, and Lanshan listened intently.
The fog of confusion in Lanshan’s mind regarding the Winter Storage Skill gradually cleared, and he couldn’t help but nod repeatedly.
BOOM!
The loud noise came suddenly. Lanshan straightened up in an instant and saw fireworks exploding high in the sky, a distinct mix of purple and yellow that lingered for a long time.
He glanced left and right; thankfully, there was no one nearby.
Bai Mo stared intently at the sky. He saw a crimson shadow rise up right after, which then suddenly transformed into snake-like things that wriggled away in all directions.
But before they could get far, a beam of white light swept over them, and the unsettling things were instantly purged from existence.
Lanshan saw this as well and said softly:
"Have Demon Dao disciples entered the city?"
Bai Mo’s heart tightened. But then he remembered this was the heartland of the righteous path; it was impossible for a Demon Dao sect to cause a major disturbance here, so he relaxed.
"It’s probably nothing major. Let’s keep moving. We can ask the people at Mountain View Tower what happened tomorrow."
A moment later, Bai Mo’s shop came into view, and Lanshan said:
"Should I arrange for a few men to keep an eye on things for you?"
Bai Mo smiled and shook his head.
"I’ve traveled with my fellow disciples and seen a thing or two. I’ve been through some major situations."
"There’s no need to trouble anyone."
Lanshan nodded. "Alright."
Only then did he bid farewell to Bai Mo.
Bai Mo walked back toward his shop. After a few steps, he turned and saw Lanshan knocking on the door of a nearby house.
He remembered that a few men from a Demon Hunting Team lived there.
A smile touched his lips. Bai Mo turned back, a question surfacing in his mind.
’Why is there still candlelight in the shop?’
’We should have closed up long ago at this hour.’
When he reached the shop’s entrance, Bai Mo saw Wei An, as well as that old fellow, Xu Ruyuan, inside.
An old man was pointing at the puppy on the counter and saying something.
"What’s going on?"
Bai Mo stepped into the shop.
"Ah, this young gentleman must be Shopkeeper Bai."
The old man turned around abruptly, a look of pleasant surprise on his face.
Wei An hurried over.
"Shopkeeper, it’s like this..."
He quickly and quietly explained the situation.
Understanding dawned on Bai Mo, and he looked at Xu Ruyuan.
"Fellow Daoist Xu, you also think this dog is worth buying?"
"Of course it is! Sometimes, there are hidden places where herb gatherers don’t know if there are any herbs. This dog would be a great help."
"Then let’s buy it," Bai Mo nodded.
But just as a joyful look appeared on the old man’s face, he saw Bai Mo point to the puppy.
"But doesn’t this dog need some treatment? Otherwise, I’m afraid it won’t make it, and buying it would be pointless."
The old man looked down and saw the puppy twitching slightly, its breathing labored.
"Oh! It must have been frightened by the commotion just now."
He picked up the puppy, ready to hurry back.
"I’ll take it back and treat it. It’ll be lively and bouncing around again by tomorrow!"
The old man was about to leave in a rush.
BANG!
Just as he reached the doorway, the wooden door was suddenly pushed open, swinging right past his face.
The old man’s temper flared, and he was about to curse, but when he looked up, his anger died down.
The newcomers were several Xuandao Sect disciples. The leader was breathing heavily, his face slightly pale.
"Junior Brother, did any unfamiliar Cultivators pass by just now?"
"No."
Bai Mo walked over, shaking his head slightly.
"Did something happen?"
"Yes. It’s not convenient to explain in detail right now, Junior Brother. Just be extra vigilant these next few days."
The lead disciple said, "Those Cultivators are vicious and depraved. They’re easy to recognize."
He took a human head from behind his back and held it up.
"Take a good look."
