Chapter 253: Chapter 253: Night Action

It was a rare day that Alchemist Bai had need of them.

Lanshan secretly put out the call, gathering quite a few people—sixty or seventy men in total.

Bai Mo was very surprised. "This is too many, too many," he said. "Don’t go to so much trouble."

Lanshan chuckled.

"They all came voluntarily. They’re locals, born and raised, people we know through and through. I couldn’t turn them away. Besides, there’s safety in numbers."

"Right, right."

The group of men nodded in agreement.

Big or small, it was a favor owed.

Heaven knew when one of them might need to knock on Alchemist Bai’s door for help.

With the goodwill they were building today, it would be easier to ask.

「That night.」

When he saw a night owl fly overhead, Bai Mo waved his hand, and the group set out.

The men traveled light. Combined with their experience navigating Celestial Barrier Mountain, the sixty-to-seventy-man force moved without making a single sound.

Every intersection and alley on the entire street was blocked off.

Shadowy figures flickered in the darkness. After a few streaks of brilliant white sword light flashed past, the shadows vanished.

Only stains of flowing blood remained where they had been.

It was the Sect Disciples taking action, clearing out the sentries on the perimeter.

A chill ran down the men’s spines as they watched. Lanshan barked in a low voice:

"Everyone, pay attention! Don’t get close to them. If you see someone, just greet them with iron nets and flying hammers!"

"If you’re forced into close quarters, swarm them! Make sure you hack them to death!"

The men responded in affirmation and quickly took up ambush positions in the corners, their eyes glued to the intersections.

Bai Mo and Lanshan, guided by memory, crept toward Uncle Mo’s residence. The old dog keeper was staying there as a guest.

Before they even got close, they saw the courtyard was shrouded in a black curtain, as if someone had draped a dark cloth over it, obscuring the scene within.

Bai Mo stopped and sucked in a cold breath.

’Such an elaborate setup?’

Just then, a few more Xuandao Sect Disciples leaped over, their Longswords stained with blood.

"The Mola Cover, famed for absorbing all sound and breath?"

"They really spared no expense."

With that, the few of them charged in.

Bai Mo was about to move when he heard low roars from not far behind him, accompanied by the angry shouts of the Demon Hunting Team’s men.

He glanced back, then, without further hesitation, led Lanshan and charged into the courtyard.

Their figures disappeared into the gloom. Everything before them went black, then settled into a murky gray.

A flash of light appeared. A Senior Brother who had rushed in lit up his sword, illuminating an empty dog kennel to the side.

The figure of a Demonic Cultivator flickered and vanished. The Xuandao Sect Disciples fanned out in pursuit.

Bai Mo glanced at the ransacked kennel and understood.

’They really are looking for something!’

In that brief pause, the two of them had already adjusted to the dimness.

After a quick scan, Bai Mo headed for the master bedroom.

Inside the master bedroom, Uncle Mo was clutching a simple saber, its blade already showing spots of rust. He was trembling uncontrollably.

There wasn’t a single sound from outside. Normally, the old man’s dogs would be making noise, but now it was frighteningly quiet.

The scene before him was as if mixed with black sand, making it nearly impossible to see clearly.

Suddenly, the wooden door trembled. For an instant, a crack was forced open before it snapped shut again. Uncle Mo clearly felt the vibration.

His heart quivered. He didn’t even bother to wipe away the dust falling on his head, simply frozen in place.

After a moment, the wooden door opened.

The figures of Bai Mo and Lanshan appeared. Behind them lay a mangled corpse.

"Uncle Mo, we’re here to save you."

The words had barely left his mouth when Bai Mo realized no sound could escape in this place.

With no other choice, Bai Mo went forward and pulled at the dazed Uncle Mo.

The old man snapped out of it and quickly followed Bai Mo and Lanshan out the door.

In his panic, he even left the rusty saber behind.

Lanshan glanced at it. He had no idea where the man had picked up the blade. Its edge was dull; it could only offer a false sense of security.

When Uncle Mo stepped out of the courtyard, the night wind rushed to meet him. For a moment, it was as if he had entered another world.

He was deeply moved. With a cry of "Aiyah!", he became a blubbering, grateful mess.

"Thank you, you two! If not for you, these old bones of mine would’ve met their end."

"I’ve worked hard my whole life. It wouldn’t be right to get a bit of money only to die before I could enjoy it."

Seeing his state, Bai Mo didn’t say much. He pointed him in the right direction and asked:

"Where is that old man staying?"

Uncle Mo turned to point, but all he could see was his own pitch-black courtyard, the scene within completely obscured.

Panicked and helpless, he could only describe the location to Bai Mo.

"That was my old storage room. That old fellow wanted to live in it, so I cleaned it up for him..."

Parting ways with Uncle Mo, Bai Mo and Lanshan headed straight for the storage room.

As they drew near, they saw ghostly figures flickering outside the room.

The Sect Disciples had already engaged the Demonic Cultivators.

Bai Mo estimated that the small room, aside from a bed, could only fit two tables.

It was strange. The old man had specifically requested this room, not asking for a more comfortable and well-lit one.

VMMM!

In this soundless environment, the hum of metal was exceptionally piercing.

The moment he heard it, Bai Mo froze and pulled Lanshan to a stop.

The hems of their clothes fluttered. A moment later, the few farming tools and brooms standing beside them abruptly broke into several pieces.

Lanshan’s eye twitched. Seeing several figures that leaped like beasts get sliced apart like stalks of rice by a blade’s edge, he fully grasped the danger of this place.

He dashed to the side, intending to push open the door to the side room.

Dust plumed up.

But when his large hand struck the door, Lanshan only felt a jarring pain.

The door wouldn’t open.

He turned his head and saw that the doors to the latrine, the cellar, and other places being assaulted were all shut tight.

This must be why no one had found the old man’s hiding place yet.

Lanshan tried several more times without success.

"Strange. Uncle Mo’s bedroom door opened after just a couple of pushes."

He was out of options. He pulled Bai Mo to a corner, watching their surroundings warily.

The Xuandao Sect Disciples spent little effort killing the Demonic Cultivators’ inhuman Beast Slaves.

It was like chopping melons and vegetables; blood and guts flew everywhere.

Only the occasional Demonic Cultivator, covered in dark blood, who charged out from an oblique angle and attacked ferociously, managed to injure the Xuandao Sect Disciples.

Bai Mo repeatedly pointed his finger. With each point, a Pill Furnace would appear above the head of a corresponding cultivator and slam down over them.

The Sect Disciples would then seize the opportunity to kill their opponents, subtly shifting their positions to shield Bai Mo from view.

A Beast Slave charged at Lanshan. He slammed it to the ground, swung his fist, and smashed its head open.

He glanced at Bai Mo out of the corner of his eye.

This Shopkeeper Bai now possessed unfathomable methods. Even with Lanshan’s experience, he couldn’t make heads or tails of it.

It was a far cry from when they first met, when he had no means of self-defense at all.

Unlike the silence outside, the storage room was filled with the chaotic panting of various dogs.

The old man was kneeling on the floor, kowtowing to an ancient painting hanging on the wall.

"Sect Leader, oh, Sect Leader, this old man can’t protect you anymore!"

He wept sorrowfully.

"Vicious wolves run rampant outside! Why did you have to fall into my hands back then? I don’t have an ounce of strength!"

He looked at the dogs around him. They were placed in various positions, and their auras were rapidly weakening.

The old man was silent for a moment, his sorrowful expression heavy with gravity.

"These special dogs can’t hold on for much longer. What happens next will depend on your fate, Sect Leader!"

He stood up, rolled up the ancient painting, and walked over to a black dog.

Prying open the dog’s mouth, the old man stuffed the scroll inside.

Strangely enough, despite the black dog’s small size, it completely swallowed the scroll without any sign of difficulty.
