Immortal Travel of Longevity
Chapter 1009: Loud Thunder and Small RaindropsLu Shan's words gave Xiao Dongxu pause.
A cultivation method...
What kind of method?
Xiao Dongxu looked again at the gathering heavenly might. Truthfully, it was his first time witnessing such a spectacle.
In an era of declining cultivation like this, creating a method capable of drawing down a Heavenly Tribulation was practically impossible. Let alone one like this—a method that commanded the attention of heaven and earth...
"It all depends on whether Mister Chen can withstand this Heavenly Tribulation. Otherwise, this creation will never see the light of day..."
"Uh..."
Xiao Dongxu hesitated for a moment. He looked toward Mister Chen, who was bustling about at the mountain's peak, and said, "I don't think there will be any problems."
The two of them watched closely.
Aside from the Nine-Character True Words he had already deployed, he layered a Golden Light Incantation over himself.
As if that weren't enough, he summoned ancient characters, inscribing an Ancient Character Formation nearly a hundred words long on the ground beneath his feet.
Yet the gentleman in the green robe still seemed unsatisfied.
After hesitating for a long while, he invoked a layer of Divine Abilities to shield his divine sense.
"..."
In the eyes of Xiao Dongxu and Lu Shan, the barriers surrounding the gentleman only continued to expand—growing larger, and larger, and larger...
Layer upon layer stacked together, forming an incredibly dense shield.
"..."
For a moment, Xiao Dongxu didn't know what to say. He lowered his head, a surreal feeling washing over him.
This didn't seem like the Mister Chen he knew.
Wasn't Mister Chen supposed to be the kind of mighty cultivator who would catch a thunder tribulation and beat it back? Why had he wrapped himself in so many defensive layers before the Heavenly Tribulation had even fallen?
It gave off the distinct impression...
...that he was terrified of dying.
Lu Shan broke the silence. "Mister Chen is truly thoroughly prepared. This Heavenly Tribulation must be extraordinary."
"Ah, yes, yes, absolutely," Xiao Dongxu quickly agreed.
He hastily lowered his head and silently recited, 'Boundless heavenly honored one.'
'I really shouldn't secretly criticize Mister. Forgive me, forgive me,' he thought.
Chen Changsheng let out a breath. He surveyed his impenetrable defenses and gave a slight nod. "This should be safe."
Naturally, he had to take some precautions.
His Magical Power was running low these days, so he needed to set up as many contingencies as possible.
Otherwise, getting struck dead by that thunder tribulation would be a complete disaster.
Chen Changsheng looked up. By now, the thunder tribulation had fully formed.
He raised a hand, bracing himself to face the onslaught.
In an instant, the darkened sky seemed to ignite under the tribulation's glare.
The flash of lightning arrived first, immediately followed by the roar of thunder!
"BOOM!"
The thunder tribulation crashed down, carrying a suffocating heavenly might that struck fear into the soul.
The Tianji Mountain Disciples were shaken to their core. The sheer, overwhelming power of heaven and earth left them awestruck, pressing down on them like an insurmountable mountain.
In an instant, the blood drained from all their faces.
Xiao Dongxu broke into a cold sweat as he stared intently at the peak.
He watched as the lightning strike collided with the outermost barrier of the Nine-Character True Words.
"RUMBLE!!"
The deafening blast sent sharp spikes of pain through their ears.
Chen Changsheng had fully braced himself. His hand seals were already moving, and his Origin Spirit, the Immortal Sword, and the Gourd hovered at his side, ready to strike the moment the thunder tribulation shattered his defenses.
However, things didn't go as anyone expected.
The thunder tribulation only clashed against the Nine-Character True Words for a few breaths before it...
...simply vanished.
Vanished?
"?"
"?"
Lu Shan and Xiao Dongxu exchanged a look of utter bewilderment.
Deep within his impenetrable layers of defense, Chen Changsheng also froze.
His lips parted slightly in sheer disbelief.
Down below, the disciples stared blankly at the sky, their faces full of confusion.
"That's it? It's over?"
"Wait, this..."
It defied all expectations.
Still in a daze, Lu Shan muttered, "Are the Nine-Character True Words really that powerful?"
"Huh?" Xiao Dongxu snapped out of his trance.
Powerful?
As someone who had studied the Nine-Character True Words himself, how come he never knew these Divine Abilities were so formidable?
It made no sense!
A thunder tribulation of that magnitude should never have been stopped by the Nine-Character True Words.
Inside his fortress of barriers, Chen Changsheng looked just as baffled.
He hadn't the faintest idea what was going on.
No one knew better than him just how devastating a Heavenly Dao Lightning Tribulation was supposed to be.
Back when he wasn't lacking in Magical Power, he had once drawn one down upon Liuyun Temple. That thunder tribulation had been massive; it had taken everything he had just to barely block it.
There was absolutely no way it should be this weak.
While he was still turning it over in his mind, another roar of thunder split the air.
"BOOM!"
The second strike flashed and faded. It still completely failed to breach the Nine-Character True Words.
A blink of an eye later, "BOOM!" the final thunder tribulation fell.
It didn't even stir the hem of Chen Changsheng's robes.
And just like that, the dark clouds in the sky began to scatter.
"?"
Chen Changsheng was even more bewildered now.
It felt exactly like preparing for a massive undertaking, arming yourself to the teeth with swords, spears, and halberds, only to find out at the very end that you just needed to step on an ant.
As the thunder tribulation retreated, the suffocating pressure weighing on the world vanished with it.
The entire sequence of events was utterly baffling.
By the time Chen Changsheng snapped out of his daze, the Heavenly Tribulation had completely dissipated.
A profound Dao rhythm descended.
The characters carved into the cliff face gradually sharpened. Shrouded in the Dao rhythm, a surge of heaven and earth's qi destiny enveloped the peak, transforming it into an indestructible, unbreakable Green Mountain.
Yet in the very next instant, the brightly glowing characters suddenly twisted, becoming increasingly obscure.
The sudden change caught Chen Changsheng slightly off guard.
However, when he focused closely, he found that he could still comprehend the text, character by character, through mental visualization.
He stroked his chin, finding it all a bit strange.
'Methods are not lightly imparted?' Chen Changsheng mused. He figured it must have changed like this because he had carved the method openly onto a cliff face.
He didn't dwell on it.
His mind was far more preoccupied with the matter of that thunder tribulation.
It had been entirely too bizarre.
Without a doubt, heaven and earth had deliberately gone easy on him.
Chen Changsheng knew his own limits perfectly well!
But even if they were going easy on him, wasn't this a little too obvious?
Loud thunder and small raindrops.
It was almost as if they were afraid people wouldn't notice they were playing favorites.
While Chen Changsheng was lost in thought, Lu Shan and Xiao Dongxu hurried over. "Mister Chen!"
"Mister!"
"Are you hurt?"
Chen Changsheng shook his head to assure them he was fine.
Xiao Dongxu's gaze drifted over to the cliff face.
The surface was covered in obscure text. He stared at it, utterly lost.
"Can you read it?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Xiao Dongxu shook his head. The moment he blinked, the characters on the stone wall seemed to shift again, bleeding together into a jumbled mess.
"What exactly is written here?" he asked.
"It is a cultivation method," Chen Changsheng replied.
Xiao Dongxu fell silent in thought.
Chen Changsheng then asked, "Where are Mister Zhong and the elders?"
Lu Shan answered, "The elders went to deal with the fog obscuring the heavenly eyes."
"I see," Chen Changsheng said.
Lu Shan continued, "If they can clear it out, that demonic cultivator won't be able to run rampant anymore, and that sinister method of his will scatter to the winds. All of this is entirely thanks to you, Mister."
Chen Changsheng replied, "It was nothing more than stumbling upon it by sheer luck."
He honestly hadn't expected things to turn out like this.
