Once her makeup and dressing were finished, the maid withdrew, carefully pulling the door shut behind her.
Guards were stationed outside, seemingly to keep Dong Chiyu from escaping.
Dong Chiyu sat before the bronze mirror. Looking at her reflection and the red bridal makeup on her face, a surge of resentment welled up in her heart.
Was it the First Branch, or the Second Branch...
It could be either of them.
In her early years, neither branch had ever treated her and her mother well. Later on, Dong Chiyu had offended the Second Branch quite a bit herself. There were some things she simply couldn't endure—one day, she had even harbored murderous intent and taken up her spear, though she had ultimately been stopped.
Those people saw her as a nail in the eye, a thorn in the flesh, and had probably long wished her dead.
They were just waiting for her to marry over and cause a scene. Once that happened, the Yun Family would certainly refuse to tolerate her. With husband and wife at odds, she would never be able to clear her name.
Dong Chiyu sighed softly, feeling truly foolish. Even now, she still didn't know who was scheming against her.
A pang of regret struck her. Had she known it would come to this, she should have just killed them all and left. Fleeing to the ends of the earth would be better than staying here.
"Tap, tap..."
A faint knocking sound echoed.
Dong Chiyu looked up, just in time to see a tile being lifted from the roof.
A pair of eyes was staring down at her.
Of course, she recognized them.
It was Ruyi.
Ruyi glanced at the guards in the courtyard, dropped down lightly, and knocked the two of them out with a couple of swift chops to the neck.
Then, she pushed the door open and stepped inside.
When Ruyi saw Dong Chiyu in her red bridal dress and full makeup, she paused in surprise. "You're getting married?"
Dong Chiyu looked at her in astonishment. "Why are you here?"
"I noticed you hadn't come to see me for a few days, so I figured something might have happened and came to take a look," Ruyi said. "What's all this about?"
Dong Chiyu sighed softly. "Someone schemed against me."
"Huh?"
Ruyi stepped forward and took a seat.
"Tell me the details."
Dong Chiyu quickly gave her a rough summary of the situation.
Ruyi frowned as she listened, finding it strange. "That doesn't make sense. Why would they go to such lengths? Even if they despise you, couldn't they just kick you out of the estate? Why go through the trouble of scheming like this?"
Dong Chiyu shook her head. "I can't figure it out either."
Ruyi stroked her chin, deep in thought.
Suddenly thinking of a possibility, she asked, "Could it be that they aren't targeting you at all?"
"Not targeting me?"
Ruyi nodded. "Maybe someone is taking advantage of the situation. They orchestrated this on purpose to stir up conflict between the Dong Family and the Yun Family."
She paused, then asked, "If you waited until your strength recovered, what would you do?"
Dong Chiyu realized what she meant. "On the wedding night, the young master of the Yun Family would probably end up dead."
"Exactly!"
Ruyi said, "I'm more and more convinced an outsider did this. They used not only you, but the Dong Family as well. Otherwise, the motives simply don't add up."
Only then did Dong Chiyu fully grasp the gravity of the situation.
Ruyi asked, "What are your plans?"
Dong Chiyu pursed her lips and shook her head. "I don't know."
She paused for a moment before adding, "I want to leave."
Ruyi looked at her. "Why didn't you ever think of leaving the Dong Estate before? Your martial arts aren't bad. Where couldn't you go?"
Dong Chiyu lowered her head. "My mother..."
"Your mother?"
"Yes," Dong Chiyu said. "My mother was murdered. I've found a few clues over the years, but it's still not entirely clear who did it."
Ruyi blinked. "So that's how it is."
"Then what do we do? We can't actually let you marry into that family, that won't do."
Dong Chiyu took a deep breath. "Regardless, I don't want to stay here anymore."
Ruyi shook her head, sighing. "You're just the fish caught in the moat when the city gates catch fire. Oh well."
"I'll take you away."
Saying that, Ruyi immediately grabbed Dong Chiyu's hand.
"Why are you still sitting there?" Ruyi asked.
Dong Chiyu replied, "I... don't have any strength."
Ruyi let out an exaggerated sigh. "You're such a hassle."
Saying that, she stepped forward and scooped her up into her arms.
Dong Chiyu was stunned for a moment, but she quickly calmed down.
Carrying her, Ruyi vaulted over the walls of the Dong Estate.
The journey was a bit bumpy.
Under the moonlight, Dong Chiyu looked at the sharp, distinct contours of the other girl's face, and couldn't help but blush and lower her head.
They hurried along, keeping out of sight.
Ruyi finally brought her back to the Tang Manor.
They happened to run into Tang Yuerong, who had just returned. Startled by the sight, she asked, "Where... where did you abduct a bride from?"
Ruyi blinked. "Don't talk nonsense. I went out to save someone."
She set Dong Chiyu down and helped her stand steady.
"Isn't that right?"
Ruyi looked at Dong Chiyu.
But Ruyi suddenly froze. She saw Dong Chiyu's cheeks flushed crimson, her head bowed as if she didn't dare meet her eyes.
"Why are you blushing?"
Ruyi blurted out, suddenly feeling a bit spooked.
Dong Chiyu turned her head away, remaining silent.
Ruyi opened her mouth, momentarily at a loss for words.
Tang Yuerong blinked, her curiosity piqued. "Hey, are you two..."
Ruyi knew Tang Yuerong was bound to say something outrageous.
She hurriedly cut her off. "Don't go imagining things! She's my disciple. She's just feeling hot. Ugh, never mind, let me settle her in first. Little sister, don't let anyone know she's here."
Tang Yuerong nodded, watching as Ruyi supported the bride and led her away.
Staring at their retreating figures, she couldn't help but shake her head, murmuring, "Sister Wang is truly a charmer..."
After saying that, she paused. Mulling it over, she felt that something was odd.
Wait a minute!
It was completely odd!
Which family did that girl belong to again?
Who in Shangjing City was getting married?
Once Tang Yuerong's curiosity was sparked, it couldn't be stopped. She actually sent people out overnight to investigate.
Once they reached a secluded area, Ruyi lightly slapped Dong Chiyu's arm and said, "I mean, why were you blushing just now? You're giving people the wrong idea! The wrong idea!"
Dong Chiyu opened her mouth, let out a soft cough, and stammered, "I'm just feeling a bit unwell. I'm... I'm sorry."
"I swear, I'm done with you."
Ruyi massaged her temples with a sigh. "You can stay here at the Tang Manor for the next few days. We'll figure everything else out later."
Dong Chiyu nodded and was promptly ushered into the room by Ruyi.
Who could have expected that Lihua would suddenly appear, catching sight of this exact scene.
"Ah!"
"A bride!"
Lihua trotted over excitedly.
But Ruyi had already shut the door.
"?"
Lihua looked up at Ruyi and asked, "Why did you hide the bride away?"
Ruyi replied, "Your eyes are playing tricks on you. There's no bride."
"No way!" Lihua said. "My eyesight is great! I clearly saw a great big bride just now!"
"There is no bride."
"There is, there is!"
"Ahhh! Stop hitting me, Ruyi! Stop hitting!"
Lihua fled in a panic, with Ruyi hot on its heels.
"I won't ask anymore! I won't ask! Stop chasing me, Ruyi! I didn't see a bride! I didn't see anything!"
