The Old Sword Cultivator stubbornly insisted on being called Master.
Yu Hongdou flatly refused to acknowledge the relationship.
Yet the Old Sword Cultivator was genuinely teaching him.
Aside from that very first time he offered to find him a sword...
Jing Wuya led him around the mountain, eventually stopping beneath a tree.
"This is it."
"Dig."
Yu Hongdou stared blankly. "Dig for what?"
"Treasure, of course!"
"I said dig."
"I won't."
Jing Wuya drew his sword. "Are you digging or not?"
Yu Hongdou's mouth twitched, and he let out a long sigh.
"I'll dig."
Being so small, Yu Hongdou dug for ages without unearthing a single thing.
To his surprise, the Old Sword Cultivator suddenly stopped him.
"Hold on."
The Old Sword Cultivator leaned down and plucked a single strand of hair from the dirt.
Seeing him treat it like a precious treasure, Yu Hongdou paused. "Just this strand of hair?"
The Old Sword Cultivator swatted him lightly. "What do you know? This is no ordinary hair. Come on, let's go get a sword forged for you."
"Are you serious?"
"Otherwise?"
Yu Hongdou smacked his lips, thinking to himself.
He really is an old fraud.
The whole ordeal had been so absurd from the start that he could hardly think otherwise.
But the events that followed made him realize this old man genuinely possessed some skill.
"The sword technique I'm teaching you is drawn from the Six Desires Sword Canon. You'd best learn it well."
Yu Hongdou did not understand a word of it, but stubbornly refused to bow his head, remaining locked in a stalemate with the Old Sword Cultivator.
Neither was willing to yield.
The Old Sword Cultivator did not care whether he wanted to learn; he was going to teach him anyway.
...
Autumn gave way to winter.
Snow began to fall across the north.
Even Shangjing City was blanketed in heavy snow.
The war did not halt for the natural disaster. Seventy percent of the demons in the Immortal-Demon Temple had been summoned out; most of these demons had come for the human dao qi fortune to become celestial officials, and now it was time for them to put in the effort.
Yu Hongdou was among them. He had no choice; with so many leaving, there was no one left to block his figure, and he drew particular attention the moment anyone glanced his way.
He had never wanted to go, but the Old Sword Cultivator forced him along, insisting he needed to experience it and see the brutality of war, as well as the malefic energy, the aura of death, and the resentment.
He claimed their lineage's sword arts were deeply tied to the energies of this world, and that he had to experience them firsthand.
With a sword resting on his neck, Yu Hongdou could not refuse, and could only go along.
But only upon arriving at this place did he finally feel what it meant for the aura of death to wash over him...
Beneath the heavy snow, the land should have been a vast expanse of pure white.
Yet before his eyes was a scene from purgatory. The white snow was dyed red, and corpse after corpse lay uncollected on the ground. In the bitter cold, some of the wounded soldiers had already frozen numb, their stiff legs festering and rotting, claiming their lives from that alone.
Amidst the expanse of blood-red, a single glance was enough to imagine the brutal slaughter that had taken place here.
Yu Hongdou stood frozen for a long time. He had often heard the other demons in the Immortal-Demon Temple talk about how many people had died and what it was like, feeling nothing at the time. Only now, seeing it for himself, did he realize what kind of scene it was, leaving him trembling...
"Stop looking," a demon beside him said. "It's not our turn for these matters yet. We have other things to do."
Yu Hongdou blinked. "Other things? We don't have to go up and fight?"
"Go try killing one. The moment you step up and kill an ordinary mortal, a celestial official will be knocking on your door tomorrow. Crippling your Cultivation Base would be a light punishment."
"A celestial official?"
"Why do you think the Human Sovereign appoints celestial officials? Never mind, forget it, stop worrying about these things. Just stick with us tomorrow. With you being only the size of a palm, you might just have a miraculous effect."
"Oh..."
Yu Hongdou followed them, only to discover their task was actually to infiltrate the Yu Territory and burn grain storehouses, followed by destroying bridges to delay the arrival of Yu Territory reinforcements.
The operation went surprisingly smoothly.
Since the demons were born of nature, they utilized their Escape Arts and Arts and Techniques to silently ignite a roaring fire in the grain storehouses.
But just as they were about to leave, things took an unexpected turn.
"I can't cast my Escape Art..."
"Me neither..."
"There's an expert here. We have to run!"
"Split up!"
All five demons, including Yu Hongdou, fled in different directions.
Yu Hongdou held his breath.
Coupled with his tiny stature, he managed to slip away completely unseen.
But the other few met a tragic end.
A Restrictive Seal had been cast over the area, leaving the other four demons unable to cast their Escape Arts to flee, while a swarm of robed Daoists suddenly surged out from the woods.
Only then did Yu Hongdou realize what was happening.
They had become a turtle in a jar.
He couldn't stay here; he had to run!
Surrounded by the Quanshan Cultivators, the four demons had nowhere to hide. In the blink of an eye, they were all captured.
One of them was even slain by a sword on the spot.
"Quanshan!!"
"Fine! No wonder you refused the invitation back then. You've sided with Prince Yu! Good, good, good..."
The Quanshan disciples paid him no mind.
A moment later, someone came to report, "Senior Brother, it seems one got away."
"One got away?"
Yu Hongdou ran through the night until he reached a densely populated area. Slipping into a household's rice vat, he finally settled down for a while.
To fall into a trap on my very first time out... such terrible luck...
Yu Hongdou muttered to himself, and combined with his exhaustion, he simply fell asleep inside the rice vat.
A long while later, a sudden cry of alarm jolted him awake.
The owner of the house had found him.
Still groggy, he was grabbed in the palm of someone's hand.
"A tiny person?"
Yu Hongdou struggled, feeling that a mere mortal could do nothing to him.
But a moment later, he was left utterly dumbfounded.
With a single thought from the person before him, his Magical Power was sealed, and his body lost all its strength.
"A demon, as expected."
Master Wei muttered, then asked, "Why did a demon like you run into a commoner's rice vat to sleep?"
Yu Hongdou blinked. "I was tired, so I fell asleep."
Master Wei smiled, then asked, "Is that so? Are you a shapeshifted demon? Why are you so small?"
Yu Hongdou paused. "I've always been like this."
"Oh?"
Master Wei blinked, unable to help but feel curious.
After a moment's thought, rather than casually letting the tiny person go, he asked, "Are you registered in the Demon Bureau?"
Yu Hongdou asked in confusion, "What Demon Bureau?"
"Then you're a demon from outside?"
Yu Hongdou did not know how to answer; he had no idea where this was.
Master Wei smiled and said, "Never mind, I won't make things difficult for you, but you still have to come with me to the Demon Bureau. This matter must be decided by the market lord. If nothing is wrong, you may leave freely."
Yu Hongdou opened his mouth and protested, "Why?"
Master Wei said, "Under the law, trespassing in a private residence carries suitable punishments, including but not limited to flogging, fines, or even exile."
