Zhang Baoyi looked at his three sworn brothers sleeping in the cell. He pursed his lips, his heart aching with reluctance to leave them.
Chen Changsheng looked at the underworld deputies and cupped his hands. "Please wait a moment. Just a few words; he won't run away."
The two underworld deputies exchanged a glance, then looked at the man in the blue shirt. Unsure of his background and seeing no malice in him, they agreed.
"Be quick."
"Thank you both."
Chen Changsheng turned to Zhang Baoyi. "You must have been watching when Tang Xun was interrogated just now. Was he the one who struck?"
Zhang Baoyi nodded. "It was him! He confessed! He threw the knife down right after he struck, and the officials found the bloody Short Blade in the tavern. But in the end, he claimed the knife wasn't his, that he didn't know how it ended up in his hand."
"He didn't see who handed it to him either, right?"
"Yeah, he said it was too chaotic."
Chen Changsheng interrupted him. "It no longer matters who it was, and that isn't what truly worries you anyway. Rest assured. This Chen will keep an eye on your three brothers for now. You can go in peace with the underworld deputies."
Zhang Baoyi lowered his head and murmured in agreement.
He then stood up, and the two underworld deputies tossed out their Binding Chains, shackling his soul.
Zhang Baoyi looked back at his three brothers.
His eyes were full of reluctance. He only wished that they would remain safe and enjoy a future bright as brocade.
"Let's go."
The underworld deputies led Zhang Baoyi's soul away.
Chen Changsheng let out a yawn. The cell was dead silent. He decided to catch some sleep right there, wait for morning to attend the coronation ceremony, and then head down into the Yellow Springs.
But the guards arrived in the middle of the night.
"Creak..."
The cell door was opened.
"You're free to go."
Chen Bin and his two brothers woke up.
They hurriedly asked, "Sir, is the case closed?"
The guard nodded. "The murderer was a man named Tang Xun from Xu Ye's group. He was drunk, and someone handed him a Short Blade. The magistrates found the blade, compared it with the evidence, and confirmed it belonged to a man named Gao Wugu. Even though these men hold military merit, this is Shangjing City—drawing a blade and killing someone makes it an entirely different matter. Xu Ye was convicted of incitement, sentenced to three years in prison, and stripped of his military rank. Tang Xun will hang, and Gao Wugu will be beheaded."
Chen Bin clenched his jaw, simmering with frustration.
The guard patted their shoulders. "I know you're frustrated, but this is the time you've finally made it through the hardest part. Don't ruin your future over it—it wouldn't be worth it."
The guard then looked over at the sleeping Chen Changsheng and the 'Old Sword Cultivator'.
"Hey, hey, wake up."
The guard shouted, saying, "You're in a cell, how can you sleep at all!"
Chen Changsheng let out a yawn and slowly woke up, then cast a Daoist art to make the 'Old Sword Cultivator' stand up.
"Get going!"
The guard shouted, urging them to leave.
Chen Changsheng pushed the Old Sword Cultivator outward, and the group left the prison just like that.
The tavern keeper's heart only settled a bit after leaving the prison. He hadn't fallen asleep at all, merely squinting his eyes; the worry in his heart kept him awake no matter what.
Chen Bin and his two brothers were the same; they simply couldn't sleep.
Only Chen Changsheng and the Old Sword Cultivator had slept dead away.
Chen Bin looked at Chen Changsheng's group and saw they were short one person, so he asked, "Where is that old gentleman...?"
"He went on ahead. Don't worry about him," Chen Changsheng said.
Chen Bin nodded, then said to Chen Changsheng and the tavern keeper, "I feel deeply guilty for implicating you today, but fortunately it didn't lead to any severe consequences. My brother has passed away, and my heart is filled with sorrow. After some time, I will come to make amends. I hope the two of you won't take offense."
The tavern keeper let out a long sigh; there was nothing much left to say now. "It's good enough that we're out..."
Chen Changsheng nodded slightly, but said nothing.
"I'll take my leave first." Chen Bin cupped his hands in farewell.
But Chen Changsheng stepped forward and said, "My surname is also Chen, so we can be considered part of the same family. Little Brother Chen, you are a man of profound loyalty and righteousness; I admire you."
Chen Bin opened his mouth and said, "I don't deserve that. You call me loyal and righteous, but in the end, I couldn't even protect my own brother."
His two brothers also covered their faces in sorrow and lowered their heads.
Chen Changsheng stepped forward, arriving by Chen Bin's side, and said, "There is something This Chen wishes to ask you. Could you lean in and lend an ear?"
Chen Bin hesitated for a moment before answering, "Why not?"
With that, he stepped forward and leaned in to listen.
Chen Changsheng said, "Do you know a saying? It goes: If you want a deed kept secret, do not commit the deed."
Hearing this, Chen Bin's heart suddenly jolted in shock. He narrowed his eyes and looked at Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng patted his arm and said, "Since childhood, This Chen has possessed a pair of yin-yang eyes, able to see the dead. Just now in the cell, who do you guess I saw?"
Chen Bin's lips trembled, somewhat at a loss.
Chen Changsheng said, "What's rather laughable is that Zhang Baoyi didn't even know who handed over the knife. When he was taken away by the underworld deputies, he was still pleading with me, asking me to persuade you all not to seek revenge and ruin your futures."
After speaking, he took two steps back.
Chen Changsheng cupped his hands, and a smile surfaced on his face as he said, "I won't say any more. This Chen wishes the three of you a future bright as brocade."
Chen Bin kept his eyes on Chen Changsheng, simply watching as he turned and walked away.
He had thought he did it flawlessly, but in the end, it was still seen by someone's eyes.
He panicked slightly, terrified that this person would speak of the matter.
But on second thought, he felt slightly relieved. If this person had wanted to tell, he probably would have done so just now. Why wait until now to bring this matter up with him?
This person, most likely, was not afraid of him.
Seeing their older brother standing in a daze, the two brothers asked, "Brother Chen, what did that person say to you?"
Chen Bin shook his head. "N-nothing. He didn't say anything..."
Mister Qingshan's figure vanished around the corner of the alley.
Chen Bin looked at his two brothers beside him. Perhaps finding his conscience, he spoke, "Let's not take revenge anymore, let's not..."
...
Chen Changsheng came to a pavilion to look at the moon.
He was waiting for dawn.
The Old Sword Cultivator arrived on his flying sword, carrying the scent of Rouge and musk.
Chen Changsheng said, "You could actually bear to leave that den of pleasure?"
The Old Sword Cultivator said, "What kind of talk is that? No matter how good it is, I can't just keep sleeping."
Chen Changsheng shook his head helplessly and said, "You're going to completely drain yourself sooner or later."
The Old Sword Cultivator smiled, but did not answer.
He asked, "Released this quickly? I thought it would take a few days."
Chen Changsheng said, "Of course it had to be fast. After all, the coronation ceremony is right at dawn. If they didn't close the case quickly, it would mean they didn't want their official hats anymore."
The Old Sword Cultivator smacked his lips and nodded. "The human heart is truly unfathomable."
"Indeed," Chen Changsheng said.
The Old Sword Cultivator then asked, "By the way, why didn't you save that guy? What was his name, Zhang something?"
"Why didn't you save him?"
"Wasn't it because I saw you didn't make a move either?"
Chen Changsheng slapped his hand on the railing and asked in return, "If I had saved him, then no one else would have died?"
The Old Sword Cultivator chuckled and replied,
"Maybe even more people would have died."
