Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1171: Genius and Madman

Xiao Fuzi dispatched people to search everywhere, but they still couldn't find the old man. In this boundless Sand Sea, if someone vanished, likely no one but the Prefecture Lord could easily track them down.

After a long, fruitless search, he turned back.

He had no choice but to report to Meng Po that the old man had fled into the Sand Sea and couldn't be found anytime soon.

Meng Po scoffed at the news. "I refuse to believe he won't show up."

She wasn't worried about the matter at all.

The Sand Sea was boundless. Aside from yin and death energy, it held not a single trace of spiritual energy. A cultivator here would either embark on the Way of Ghost Cultivation or simply wander lost in the dunes forever. Every dead soul in the Sand Sea shared the exact same destiny: to drink this bowl of soup and step onto the bridge beyond.

At that moment, Zhong Zhengyuan was wandering aimlessly through the yellow sands. The blowing grit stung his eyes, blurring the path ahead. He tried to head back to the shore, but no matter how hard he searched, the way back was gone.

This realm was beyond his ability to fathom.

Zhong Zhengyuan let out a long sigh, only to suddenly hear a voice behind him.

Startled, Zhong Zhengyuan turned around.

A man lay sprawled on a sand dune, half his body buried in the grit.

The man yawned and said carelessly, "This is the Netherworld Underworld. Once you enter, there's no turning back. Aren't you just wasting your energy?"

Zhong Zhengyuan walked over and cupped his hands. "I am Zhong Zhengyuan. May I ask this Fellow Daoist's name?"

"Me? My Daoist title is Chidi. I don't know if you've heard of me."

Zhong Zhengyuan paused in surprise before asking, "Perfected Chidi of Nine Flames Mountain?"

The man blinked and turned his head. "You actually have heard of me."

"During the Immortal-Demon War, I had the honor of witnessing your greatness," Zhong Zhengyuan said.

Chidi opened his mouth, then sighed. "What does it matter? I still died at the hands of those demonic cultivators."

He had perished during that very era.

Right as the Underworld was being completed, he thought he would come down to try his luck. Instead, he tumbled into this inescapable trap. Over time, he embarked on the Way of Ghost Cultivation. Now he just wandered the Sand Sea, spending most of his time either cultivating or sleeping.

Zhong Zhengyuan sat down. "You just said there's no way out of here?"

Chidi nodded. "You can come in, but you can't leave."

Zhong Zhengyuan's expression shifted.

"You're quite something, Fellow Daoist Zhong," Chidi said. "This place is under the control of the demonic path now, yet you actually managed to bring your physical body inside. That takes real skill."

Zhong Zhengyuan's heart skipped a beat. "The Underworld's Reincarnation is being controlled by demonic cultivators?"

Chidi nodded. "That's right."

"Wasn't it Mister Chen?"

"How should I know? It was already like this when I got here. I got a clear look at those demon monarchs—they're the same ones from the Immortal-Demon War. My guess is that the mister went to war with the heavens and the earth, and the demonic cultivators swooped in to play the fisherman who profits from the quarrel."

Zhong Zhengyuan's chest tightened and his brows locked together. "I have to get out of here right away."

Chidi just scoffed. "Don't even think about it."

"This place must have a flaw," Zhong Zhengyuan insisted. "There has to be a way out."

Chidi smiled and gave him a thumbs up. "Good luck with that, Fellow Daoist. I'm going to take a nap."

Seeing his attitude, Zhong Zhengyuan didn't bother trying to persuade him otherwise.

Gathering his thoughts, he resumed his search across the Sand Sea.

Chidi only thought he was wasting his energy. This boundless Sand Sea was incomprehensibly vast, to say nothing of the nature of the realm itself. It wasn't a place one could just come and go as they pleased.

As far as he was concerned, Zhong Zhengyuan's ultimate fate would be exactly like his own: turning into a ghost cultivator who survived by absorbing yin energy.

Either that, or he would end up drinking that bowl of soup!

Meanwhile, in the outside world.

Su Junhan was still fraught with anxiety over Mister Chen's situation.

No matter how he looked at it, he couldn't figure out why Mister Chen had vanished so bizarrely, nor could he make sense of the place Mister Chen's remnant soul had told him about.

Was he really in the Underworld?

Just as he was at his wit's end, Xiao Dongxu suddenly sought him out.

"I have an idea!"

Su Junhan looked at him. "Please speak, Fellow Daoist Xiao."

"Back then, that demon monarch managed to return from the Yellow Springs," Xiao Dongxu said. "That means we should also be able to bring someone back from the Underworld!"

Su Junhan was slightly taken aback. "But that demon monarch sacrificed a massive number of people to do so..."

Xiao Dongxu shook his head. "Listen to me, Fox Lord. I have studied that Altar extensively. For years, I never gave up on it—I've scoured ancient texts and hunted down ancient scripts. My sect traces its lineage back to Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain, which was once the cradle of the ancient-script cultivators. I understand these things deeply. After years of analyzing it, I finally realized that the Altar's primary purpose wasn't to summon souls at all. It was meant to shatter the blockade between heaven and earth."

Su Junhan froze. "Are you saying... if we act in harmony with the heavens and the earth, we wouldn't need a sacrifice?"

"The Heavenly Dao is no longer in control of the Yellow Springs," Xiao Dongxu said. "We won't be making an enemy of the heavens and the earth. Our only opponent is that demon monarch!"

"Right..."

Everything suddenly clicked into place for Su Junhan. He stared at Xiao Dongxu in sheer amazement. The man truly deserved his reputation as the prodigy who had deciphered the Immortal Mountain's hidden troves. His mind always worked in ways ordinary people could never grasp.

"We'll have to run some tests first..."

Xiao Dongxu's gaze suddenly grew distant as he muttered relentlessly, "Let me think, let me think..."

"Mister Chen, Mister Chen..."

"Mister..."

Xiao Dongxu suddenly froze. "Mister Zhong! Mister Zhong went to the Underworld!"

Su Junhan watched his frantic, near-mad train of thought, struggling to keep up with him.

But before he could even get a word in...

Xiao Dongxu sprinted off, leaving without another word.

Su Junhan marveled at his extraordinary way of thinking. Perhaps this was why the disciples of Tianji Mountain all hailed Fellow Daoist Xiao Xiao as a genius. His ideas were always like a heavenly horse soaring through the skies, and his actions were swift as thunder and fierce as wind—to the point where he almost seemed like a madman.

Unwittingly, Su Junhan found himself reflecting on his own capabilities.

When it came to sheer intellect, he truly couldn't match Xiao Dongxu.

"It really is just as Priest Chen said," he mused. "If Fellow Daoist Xiao Xiao put his entire heart into his cultivation, his name would already be listed among the supreme sovereigns of this world."

Su Junhan sighed. He couldn't quite wrap his head around it, which was likely why he struggled to keep up with Xiao Dongxu's racing thoughts. When a genius and a madman resided in the exact same body, common sense simply went out the window.

After running off, Xiao Dongxu sat alone beside the demonic cultivator's Altar to study it. The Four Treasures of the Study were laid out beside him, along with a massive pile of books.

In just a matter of moments, discarded parchment littered the ground around him.

"No, no..."

"It should be like this... Ugh, no, that's not right either..."

"The Yellow Springs belong to yin, taking the form of water, the Underworld..."

"The two are yin and yang... Yes, the alternation of yin and yang, the cycle of the sun and moon!"

"That's it! That has to be it!"
