The Demon Sovereign flew into a rage. He never expected the Heavenly Dao to use such underhanded tactics to launch a sneak attack out of nowhere.
"Didn't you say things could only go out and not come in?" he demanded.
Manyue replied, "That applies to people, but this is the Heavenly Dao Lightning Tribulation. You know as well as I do that I was originally part of the Heavenly Dao. How could I possibly stop it?"
The Demon Sovereign scratched his head and sat down.
He was thoroughly exasperated, resolving inwardly to exact vengeance for this.
...
Within Tianji Mountain.
Xiao Dongxu, having suffered the backlash, slowly calmed down. With Su Junhan channeling energy into him, his injuries gradually mended.
Fortunately, they were not severe.
Su Junhan offered a guess. "Could it be because Mister Chen usurped Reincarnation?"
"But Mister Chen is no longer the master of Reincarnation," Xiao Dongxu pointed out.
He stood up and took a deep breath. "I want to try one more time."
But Zhong Zhengyuan refused.
"That Purple Firmament Divine Thunder is extraordinary, and we still do not know exactly who it was aiming for. If we try again, I fear something else might go wrong..."
Xiao Dongxu argued, "Mister Zhong, I can feel it. That thunder tribulation wasn't directed at us. It was aimed at the other side of the Formations."
Zhong Zhengyuan sank into thought.
"Mister Zhong," Xiao Dongxu pressed, "just one more time. Only this once."
Seeing Xiao Dongxu so determined, Su Junhan knew his temperament. If they didn't let him try now, he wouldn't let the matter rest; he would simply attempt it later when he was alone.
It was better to do it now while everyone was present.
"I will stand guard for you," Su Junhan said.
Hearing this, Zhong Zhengyuan could only nod. "If the Fox Lord is standing guard, there shouldn't be any major issues. Let us try one more time."
Xiao Dongxu quickly expressed his gratitude. "Thank you, Fox Lord. Thank you, Mister Zhong."
Zhong Zhengyuan took a deep breath. "Silly child, you really should consider your own safety more."
Xiao Dongxu merely smiled and offered no reply.
Before long, Xiao Dongxu laid down the Formations once more.
Su Junhan, Zhong Zhengyuan, and Elder Chen all stood guard. This time, none of them dared to be the slightest bit negligent, remaining wholly focused.
The gate of yin and yang swung wide open.
On the other side, the Demon Sovereign noticed the gravel trembling once again. Before his eyes, the vortex from moments ago reappeared.
"Don't—" The Demon Sovereign didn't even finish his sentence.
He watched as Manyue lightly waved her sleeve, and the vortex dissipated before it could even fully form.
Seeing this, the Demon Sovereign snapped, "What's the rush?!"
Manyue looked at him and simply asked, "What did you want to do? Deliver another strike of your Sword?"
The Demon Sovereign snorted coldly and fell silent.
Manyue glanced at him. "In your current state, if you take two more strikes of the Purple Firmament Divine Thunder, I'm afraid you won't even have the time to run!"
The Demon Sovereign shot her a glacial look. "I won't have time to run? What a joke. I am the grand Demon-Summoning Divine Lord. Why would I fear a paltry thunder tribulation? In the past, I could summon this Purple Firmament Divine Thunder with a wave of my hand. What is there to fear?"
Manyue, however, calmly replied, "That was the past."
The Demon Sovereign's mouth twitched, his grip tightening around his Sword.
Manyue raised an eyebrow. "What are you doing? I am the one in charge here now!"
The Demon Sovereign reined in his temper. "I'm just wiping my Sword."
Manyue turned her head away and went back to reading her book.
The Demon Sovereign sighed softly, muttering under his breath, "Your temper really is just like hers."
Manyue didn't reply, nor did she look at him.
Perhaps she thought he was simply unhinged.
...
The gate was blocked before it could even fully open.
The ancient characters of the Talisman before them burned to ash at that very moment.
Xiao Dongxu looked slightly bewildered. He opened his mouth and said, "I'll try again."
But when he tried again, the result was exactly the same.
The ancient characters dissipated halfway through. It was as if the Arts and Techniques had been intentionally snuffed out by someone.
He tried a third time, but nothing changed.
Xiao Dongxu couldn't help but sigh. He realized that someone must have noticed his actions—likely the fiend who had taken control of the Underworld.
"There's nothing else we can do..."
The group sat down, left with no choice but to discuss a new strategy.
"Does this mean our only option is to make another trip to the Underworld?"
Zhong Zhengyuan shook his head. "From my perspective, that would be a terrible idea, unless..."
Su Junhan shifted his gaze to Zhong Zhengyuan. He raised an eyebrow, having roughly guessed his line of thought.
"Mister Zhong, isn't it still too early for that? Moreover, the major Immortal Mountains are currently hesitating and unable to make a decision. They won't necessarily cooperate."
Hearing this, Zhong Zhengyuan nodded helplessly. "That is precisely the problem."
Even though demonic cultivators were currently wreaking havoc upon the world, they hadn't actually caused any real harm to these sects of the immortal path. In the Cultivation World, Dao Cultivation reigned supreme, and one's life was even more precious. A single word from them wasn't enough to ignite the conflict between the righteous and demonic paths.
Standing off to the side, Chen Daoqiu spoke up. "We will have to make other plans."
The situation had fallen into a stalemate once again.
Zhong Zhengyuan was well aware of what they were about to face, but the current stance of the major Immortal Mountains was to sit back and watch how things played out. If he were ignorant of the truth, he would likely do the same. He couldn't really blame anyone.
...
Meanwhile, down in the Mortal World.
Glad tidings arrived at the Minister's Residence.
Young Master Tong, hailing from Minister Tang's residence, had his name on the golden scroll for this metropolitan examination, securing the esteemed rank of Tanhua.
"Excellent, excellent! Rewards for everyone!"
Tang Mingjing was extremely generous, rewarding the messengers who brought the good news with quite a few silver taels.
As for Tong Nianyi, she stayed inside the estate, not daring to wander around.
According to Uncle Tang, this was to prevent people from trying to snatch up a successful candidate as a son-in-law beneath the announcement board. If she were dragged off like that, it would truly be a massive joke.
The steward rushed over excitedly, shouting, "Young Master Tong, Young Master Tong! You passed! You are the Tanhua on the list! Congratulations, Young Master Tong!"
Tong Nianyi stared blankly for a moment. She opened her mouth. "Tanhua..."
Then, she asked, "Steward, who took the titles of Huiyuan and Bangyan this time?"
The steward replied, "The Huiyuan is Young Master Xie Huan from Shangjing City. The Bangyan is someone from Jiangnan, but I haven't caught wind of their name yet. I will go and inquire further right away."
Tong Nianyi retrieved some silver taels from her sleeve and handed them to the steward. "I've troubled you, Steward. Here is some lucky money, please accept it."
The steward frantically waved his hands and stepped back. "I couldn't possibly! Young Master Tong, you have brought immense honor to our Tang Manor this time. How could I accept your lucky money? Just wait, Young Master—the Master will definitely bestow substantial rewards."
With that said, the steward hurried off in high spirits.
Watching him go, Tong Nianyi gathered her thoughts.
After years of hard work, she was one step closer.
The title of Tanhua had now fallen upon her shoulders. The entirety of Shangjing City knew of her now, which meant that she could no longer appear before the world as a woman. She couldn't afford a single slip-up.
Next up was preparing for the Palace Examination.
This would be the hardest hurdle of all.
The Palace Examination was just a month and a half away.
"Xiao Nianyi, Xiao Nianyi!"
Tong Nianyi snapped back to reality and looked over, only to see Aunt Ruyi arriving to deliver the good news, bringing Lihua along.
"Aunt Ruyi, how did you get here so quickly?"
Ruyi crossed her arms and said, "Didn't I follow the messengers? Bah, they ran faster than me. Someone else claimed the lucky money."
Hearing this, Tong Nianyi smiled and said, "I have some here."
"I was just saying that. I don't actually want any lucky money."
Ruyi sat down and began to chat with her.
"By the way, there were quite a few experts this time, huh? I noticed you've always been at the top of the list before."
Tong Nianyi sighed softly. "Just down on my luck."
"Why is that?" Ruyi blinked.
Tong Nianyi explained, "On the very last day, I wasn't feeling well. My mind was a mess, and my answers weren't good."
"Ah? Where were you feeling unwell?" Ruyi pressed.
Tong Nianyi opened her mouth, but her face simply flushed red as she held her words back.
Seeing her like this, Ruyi blanked for a moment.
"Your time of the month?"
Tong Nianyi nodded, unable to help but lower her head.
Ruyi let out a sympathetic sigh, muttering, "Then you were indeed down on your luck."
