Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1182: Entering a Dream

Before the Gate of Reincarnation in the Underworld.

The Demon Sovereign gazed into the profound depths of the gate before him.

To step inside was to enter Reincarnation; it was rebirth.

Manyue stood beside him and said, "It is getting late."

The Demon Sovereign returned to his senses. "Yes, it is."

He opened his mouth, then said, "Sometimes I truly feel I am a ruthless man, yet I have no choice but to do this."

Hearing this, Manyue raised an eyebrow. "Do not harbor any illusions of luck," she said. "It will ruin the great matter at hand."

"I know exactly what I am doing."

The Demon Sovereign said, "When it comes to ruthlessness, few hearts are as ruthless as mine."

"Mm."

He gave a soft murmur of agreement.

The Demon Sovereign stepped forward and waved a hand, saying casually, "We will meet again if fate allows."

Under Manyue's watchful gaze, the Demon Sovereign's figure was gradually swallowed by Reincarnation. As the master of Reincarnation, she knew the endless fortunes within it, but she also knew they were accompanied by countless risks.

When his figure vanished entirely, footsteps sounded behind Manyue.

A voice soon followed.

"Is he gone?"

Manyue paused for a moment, then nodded.

The newcomer was Meng Po of the Underworld, the young maiden who brewed soup in the Main Hall.

Meng Po fell silent, merely staring at the gate in a slight daze.

A long time passed.

Finally, a low murmur escaped her lips.

"May his wishes come true."

...

The Demon Sovereign traveled through that expanse of chaos.

Within the long river of Reincarnation, he searched for the gate that led to the Mortal World.

Time was short. He could not afford to linger.

He did not know how much time had passed before he found an unknown patch of chaos in a corner of Reincarnation. Driven by a certain person's thoughts, it had transformed into a great dream. Yet it was also narrow—so small that it was nothing more than that one person's solitary world.

And he stepped into that dream.

...

Qingshan City within the dream was peaceful and serene.

Many patrons came and went at the tea stall by the city gates. They were all unfamiliar faces; some did not even have faces or mouths at all. Within the dreamer's consciousness, these people were supposed to be like this. They were merely passersby, so why would they need features?

Yan Huanglou was boiling tea, heating two small kumquats alongside it.

He spoke, "Have a taste. See what you think of my new tea."

Chen Changsheng was naturally happy to oblige. He took the tea, took a sip, and praised, "Good tea. What was it smoked with? How does it have a peach fragrance?"

Yan Huanglou said, "Dried peaches. This tea is good to drink, but it doesn't keep well. Even roasted dry, it will still rot."

"What a pity. Tea is something that only becomes sweeter and more fragrant the longer it is kept," Chen Changsheng remarked.

Yan Huanglou nodded and said, "That's exactly why I say you just drink this one for a fresh taste."

As the two chatted, Yan Huanglou also sat down.

He let out a long breath and said, "Ah, these days really are comfortable."

Chen Changsheng smiled and said, "Is that a bad thing?"

Yan Huanglou collected himself and nodded. "Naturally, it's a good thing."

Chen Changsheng said, "Or should we make the world a little more chaotic?"

Hearing this, Yan Huanglou blanked for a moment, but shook his head. "No need for that. Tossing things around just for the sake of novelty isn't really worth the trouble."

"True."

Just as they were speaking, another voice chimed in.

"Why has Mister run off to this place again? I told you that you must eat breakfast first before drinking tea."

Following Chen Changsheng's gaze, a woman in a green skirt came over and sat down beside him.

Chen Changsheng smiled and replied, "Old Huang made some congee earlier, and I ate a bit."

Hearing this, Yunxiang nodded. "That's more like it."

The dream had everything.

There were the people he wanted to see, and endless things to talk about. He would not be lonely, nor would he be bored. He could pass through the four seasons like an ordinary man, watching the heavy winter snows and feeling the spring breeze.

In the midst of their idle chatter, Chen Changsheng suddenly froze.

The scene before him suddenly turned illusory.

The surrounding tables and stools seemed to shatter and fragment before his eyes.

Chen Changsheng couldn't help but rub his eyes. When he looked to the side, however, he saw the people beside him gradually fading away as well.

He leaped to his feet and gave a loud shout: "Who is it?!"

As his words fell, the entire dream shattered.

The grand dream seemed to recede at this moment. In a single breath, the surrounding tea stall, the city walls, and the green mountains and rivers dissolved into a deathly white expanse. It was completely empty, yet stretched boundlessly out of sight.

Chen Changsheng turned his gaze toward a certain direction.

There, he saw a person standing with an Opera Mask covering his face.

The greasepaint on the mask was a vivid crimson, giving off an illusion of something chilling and sharp.

The Demon Sovereign spoke: "Are the days in this dream carefree?"

Chen Changsheng's brow furrowed. He took a step forward, and in the next instant, he arrived right in front of the Demon Sovereign.

"Who are you?!"

The Demon Sovereign looked at him and said, "You don't remember me? You played quite the trick on me back then. Have you forgotten?"

Chen Changsheng narrowed his eyes, saying, "This Chen believed we would no longer have any ties between us."

Hearing this, the Demon Sovereign burst into loud laughter.

"No ties?"

He said, "Have you forgotten what I told you? You... are me. How could there be no ties between us?"

Chen Changsheng's thoughts returned, and he said, "You truly have great ability. Who could have imagined that a demon like you would hide in the depths of the Yellow Springs?"

The Demon Sovereign said, "The affairs of the world are impermanent. If I did not do this, how could I have survived until now?"

Chen Changsheng did not want to waste words on him, speaking directly instead: "Why have you come here? This Chen does not want to waste words on you. Of course, This Chen also hopes you are better off saying nothing at all."

Hearing this, the Demon Sovereign smiled and said, "Is it that you do not wish to face your former self?"

Chen Changsheng raised an eyebrow and said, "This Chen has said it a thousand times. I am me, and not anyone else."

"Am I someone else?" the Demon Sovereign murmured.

He stepped forward. The eyes showing from beneath the mask stared intently at Chen Changsheng.

"Do you think I am someone else?"

"Have you really forgotten where it is you came from?"

Their gazes met.

In that instant, the scene before Chen Changsheng's eyes abruptly shifted.

Yet he forcefully snapped back to his senses. With a raise of his hand, the illusion before his eyes shattered into pieces.

As Chen Changsheng raised his hand, the Immortal Sword was grasped tightly in his hand.

"This is my dreamscape! It is not the place for a demon like you to act recklessly!"

Saying this, Chen Changsheng brought his sword forward to strike. In the very next moment, the blade was already resting against the Demon Sovereign's neck.

The Demon Sovereign's expression tightened, and he retreated several steps in a row.

He said, "You have truly fooled even yourself. You no longer care for the past at all."

Chen Changsheng raised the Immortal Sword, only speaking in an indifferent tone: "The past is nothing but vanishing smoke. What does it have to do with This Chen? You say I am you, but I am only myself! Demon! Since you dared to come, I will have you buried in this very place!"

"Sword, rise!"
