Fusing the qi destiny of the world into one was far beyond what Wang Yingying could accomplish alone.
She had already explained their current predicament to Yan Nantian.
The destiny of the nation permeated the entire world. To secure it required traveling across the realm to lay down Formations using the Imperial Seal as their core. The sheer scale of such an undertaking was monumental, requiring many people to coordinate.
Wang Yingying then said, "Your Majesty, I have studied Daoist scriptures for many years, but I know little of Formations. I will need assistance."
Yan Nantian asked, "Does Priest Wang have any suitable candidates in mind?"
Wang Yingying replied, "Your Majesty, Quanshan has deeply studied the art of Formations..."
Yan Nantian paused, falling into thought.
"Quanshan..."
His attitude toward Quanshan was less than favorable, mostly due to Daoist Sanyuan's previous refusal and evasion.
Wang Yingying answered, "There are only two great pillars of Daoism in the world: Qingshan Qingxian and Quanshan. If we are to look elsewhere, we would likely have to search the Demon Market."
Yan Nantian sighed softly. "Forget it. Let it be Quanshan."
He found Quanshan much easier to control than the Demon Market.
That Badger Demon never knew its place and had defied him in his early years. The power held by the Demon Market also left Yan Nantian wary and apprehensive. Thus, when Wang Yingying brought them up, he dismissed the idea entirely.
But now, Daoist Sanyuan had entered secluded death meditation.
Yan Nantian could only turn his attention to the elders of Quanshan.
Yet when he sent people to seek them out, the elders all feigned ignorance, seemingly unwilling to enter the palace.
Seeing this, Yan Nantian did not force the issue.
He could naturally see that the Daoists of Quanshan were doing this on purpose.
But why?
Yan Nantian understood that Quanshan had always held grievances against him, but in all this time, they had never openly broken with him so directly.
Baffled, he finally just asked Wang Yingying.
Wang Yingying understood the moment she heard it.
"Perhaps it is because the stars have shifted, revealing signs that the Emperor Star will change masters."
"The Emperor Star changing masters?"
Wang Yingying nodded. "With qi destiny gathering in the Imperial Seal, the Emperor Star was bound to undergo a drastic change. Thus, seeing what the stars displayed, the priests of Quanshan likely assumed the world was about to change hands..."
Fury flared in Yan Nantian's chest.
He slammed a hand on his desk and stood up. "What a two-faced Quanshan!"
Wang Yingying offered no further comment on the matter. In her eyes, at least, Quanshan's actions were born of helplessness. As the State Religion, who would dare act rashly upon seeing such glaring celestial signs? Priest Sanyuan had likely entered secluded death meditation specifically to escape this karma.
As cultivators of the Dao, there was one thing they always had to understand.
The dynasty was the dynasty, and Daoism was Daoism. Only the Imperial Observatory belonged to the emperor; Daoism did not.
After Yan Nantian's anger passed, he sat back down and asked, "If Quanshan won't do, then who else can we find..."
Wang Yingying said, "There are many cultivators in this world. If we search in secret, we will inevitably find a few people with extraordinary talents. Take the Painting Immortal Wu Daozi, who followed Your Majesty in the past. He was originally just an ordinary painter, yet purely through his craft, he connected with the Spiritual Energy of heaven and earth and forcibly carved out his own Great Dao."
Yan Nantian turned this over in his mind.
Wang Yingying was right. He had always firmly believed that many formidable figures were hidden throughout the world. He had received many memorials about such people in his early years; finding a few shouldn't be too difficult.
Wang Yingying added, "I have heard that there is a faction in the jianghu named White Night. They are said to be omniscient, their information network unparalleled. Your Majesty might consider sending someone to ask them."
"I have heard of them."
Now that they had a direction, finding people wouldn't be hard.
...
A guest arrived at a tavern hidden away in the alleys of Shangjing City.
The proprietress, sitting inside reading a storybook and cracking melon seeds, saw the person walk in and said, "The tavern is closed. Go somewhere else to drink."
"I want to buy some information."
"Take a seat in the back room."
Having been here for many years, the proprietress knew the drill.
She led the man into the room.
The Shadow Guard who had come from the palace looked around. He walked through a patch of pitch darkness before arriving in a room and taking a seat.
When the candle was lit, he saw that the surroundings had neither doors nor windows.
"Hmm?"
The Shadow Guard was startled. For a moment, he couldn't recall how he had even entered.
Where was the door? Where were the windows?
Was this a sealed room?
When he snapped back to his senses, the proprietress before him spoke. "What information do you want to buy? Speak plainly."
"What's the price?"
"Depends on what you want to know."
The proprietress appraised the man before her. From a single sniff of his aura, she knew he wasn't from the jianghu. She had a good eye for people and could tell at a glance that he was a deathsworn. Given his build and his attire, the person backing him likely possessed considerable background.
"I've heard there are many people with extraordinary talents in this world. I want to find a few who are deeply versed in Formations."
The proprietress narrowed her eyes. "That isn't a matter for our jianghu."
"I've heard White Night knows everything under heaven. Nothing in this vast world can be hidden from you. Surely finding a few talented individuals isn't difficult?"
The proprietress considered it for a moment. "We of White Night have always acted with the utmost caution. That information won't come cheap."
"Name your price."
The proprietress sat up straight. "I've heard that His Majesty has recently been paying close attention to a newly admitted palace selection maiden. This woman's background is unknown. I want to know her true identity."
The Shadow Guard was taken aback. Was White Night truly this capable? They even knew news from inside the palace?
"What are you trying to do?"
"And what are you trying to do?"
The Shadow Guard narrowed his eyes. "I will give you an answer tomorrow."
"Good."
The proprietress then saw the man out.
The Shadow Guard didn't linger, returning straight to the palace to report.
Not long after, another figure returned to the tavern.
"Proprietress, that man took a secret passage straight into the palace."
The proprietress murmured, "So he really is from the palace..."
She stroked her chin, suddenly feeling reluctant to do this business.
Meanwhile, when Yan Nantian heard the Shadow Guard's report, he too was startled.
He didn't meet with Wang Yingying very often, and most times, he had someone bring her to the Imperial Study rather than going to her himself. Yet White Night actually knew about this?
Yan Nantian thought for a moment before saying, "Arrange a reasonable identity for Miss Wang. Tell them..."
"Hmm..."
Something too ordinary definitely wouldn't work. White Night's abilities were greater than he had imagined. The identity had to be airtight, and it had to sever any further curiosity they might harbor.
"Say she is my long-lost daughter. Even if it's fake, make it look real! Understand?"
"Yes, My Lord!"
The Shadow Guard caught on immediately and went to arrange it at once.
The next day.
A roster was handed over to the Shadow Guard by White Night, eventually landing in Yan Nantian's hands.
Flipping it open, he was instantly astounded.
To think there were this many extraordinary talents in the world?
