Yu Hongdou behaved himself, not bothering to argue.
Nothing happened on the first day. No one came to interrogate him, so he happily enjoyed the leisure.
He could only marvel at how wondrous life was, that he would stumble into such a coincidence.
As he thought about it, he began to feel he had let the Old Shopkeeper down. The shopkeeper had been quite good to him, after all. By now, the old man was probably rotting in a cell, and who knew if he was even still alive.
"Sigh..."
Yu Hongdou muttered, suddenly unable to distinguish good from bad.
"Mister Zhu was right after all."
People said that good and evil have retribution, but he had clearly acted out of the kindness of his heart. Why had his good deed been rewarded with evil?
He didn't quite understand.
Mister Zhu had said that while good and evil have retribution was often right, it was also often wrong. It was true that merit and karma could bring a person good fortune, but some things would always go awry by a twist of fate.
He hadn't quite understood at first, but now he had gained a modicum of enlightenment.
The logic of this world was always so strange.
He took a nap in the cell. It wasn't a good place to sleep, but he had been traveling non-stop, and his stomach was still empty.
In the morning, he ate a bowl of prison food. The taste was lacking, but it managed to fill his belly.
After eating his fill, he utilized his Arts and Techniques to transform into a miniature figure and simply walked out of the prison.
The constables later launched a massive search, but failed to find him.
Yu Hongdou had long since departed the area.
The road ahead was still long, and there would be far more than just one or two bizarre encounters.
He found himself looking forward to it even more.
...
Qingshan City was as peaceful and serene as ever.
Few people lived in Chuanfeng Alley nowadays; the alley had emptied out. Back when the dynasty changed hands, Yu Hongjin had gone to the Local Government and bought up all the courtyards here.
She had money—quite a lot of it.
She had opened a wine shop in Qingshan City, taking over Uncle Li's old storefront to brew and sell wine just like before.
Yu Hongjin's craftsmanship was vastly superior to Uncle Li's.
Everyone who tasted her wine praised it.
There was a steady stream of customers coming to buy wine, alongside many more drawn by its reputation.
So Yu Hongjin brewed her wine while keeping Zhishu company. Their days were peaceful and serene; with less noise, life was even more comfortable.
"The jianghu says there is a small wine shop in Qingshan City with an exquisite taste. Now that I have tried it, it truly lives up to its reputation."
The frivolous jianghu wanderer actually spoke rather elegantly.
Yu Hongjin cracked a melon seed between her teeth, glanced at him without a second thought, and simply turned her head away.
"Young Lady, dare I ask whose hands crafted this wine?"
"Just drink your wine. Why so many words?"
The man smiled. "They also said the girl running the wine shop had a terrible temper, and it seems that isn't false either."
Yu Hongjin paid his words no mind, merely replying, "I don't know if my temper is good or bad, but if you keep nagging, I'll shove this handful of melon seed shells right into your mouth."
The jianghu wanderer let out a dry laugh. He had wanted to argue with the brat, but seeing how young she was, he figured he should let it go. He was a grown man; what point was there in bickering with a little girl?
The man was scolded away.
It was quiet again.
She sat in the wine shop, her crossed leg swinging back and forth.
She began humming a little tune she had picked up from a tea house; she had probably found it interesting and committed it to memory.
She was enjoying her leisure when a voice rang out from outside.
"Is this place still open?"
The person standing outside the wine shop seemed somewhat surprised.
Yu Hongjin did not want to get up. She had just lain down and was too lazy to rise.
"Is the shopkeeper here? Are you a descendant of the Li family?"
Yu Hongjin paused upon hearing this and sat up.
She stood up and cast her gaze outside.
"Who are you looking for? This is no longer..."
Her voice suddenly caught in her throat. The person before her left her stunned for a moment.
The person before her wore a Silk Long Dress, with a Jade Bracelet hanging from her wrist. She had a beautiful face and clean features, and the scent of peach blossoms washed over from her.
"Ah, you're... you're..."
Yu Hongjin remembered this person, but couldn't recall her name.
The young woman smiled. That sweet smile was exceptionally beautiful, leaving even Yu Hongjin in a daze.
"I still remember you, Hongjin. Yu Hongjin. Out of all the children in Chuanfeng Alley, you were the most mischievous."
She smiled, then added, "I'm Aqing. Do you remember?"
"I remember, I remember!"
Yu Hongjin nodded repeatedly. "Big Sister Aqing, when did you get back? Where did you go?"
Aqing said, "I followed the Supreme Immortal to the Immortal Realm for Cultivation. Now, I serve under Lady Lingluo at Great Snow Mountain."
"Great Snow Mountain?"
Yu Hongjin blinked. "Which Immortal Mountain would choose a name like that?"
"There aren't many disciples in the sect, so it doesn't have much of a reputation."
Aqing smiled. "But speaking of which, I remember this place was run by Uncle Li's family. How come you're the one managing it now?"
Yu Hongjin paused, then explained what had happened to Uncle Li's family.
Aqing parted her lips. "So that's how it is..."
"This world truly changes so much. It has barely been over a hundred years, yet dynasties have repeatedly risen and fallen."
"Yeah."
The two of them began to chat. Yu Hongjin invited her inside and treated her to some good wine. There was nothing else here, only wine—not even any snacks.
After tasting the wine, Aqing praised it repeatedly.
Then she asked about their acquaintances from those early years.
"Ruyi? I heard she moved to a place called Qiuyue Fang in Yan County in the Southern Parts to escape the war. She got lucky and is now a commandery princess. As for Ping'an, he later got involved in the jianghu and is now the tower lord of the jianghu faction Nanbeilou..."
Pausing here, Yu Hongjin added, "Aside from Chen Changsheng, anyone I haven't mentioned is already gone."
Hearing this, Aqing's heart trembled. She parted her lips, but didn't know how to respond.
She let out a soft sigh and stroked Yu Hongjin's hair.
"Are you the only one left now?"
Yu Hongjin paused. "There's also Sister Zhishu. She's at home, but she has already turned to ghost cultivation."
"Ghost cultivation, huh? Why would..."
"Anyway, um, I don't know how to explain it."
Yu Hongjin opened her mouth, then waved her hand. Feeling inexplicably upset, she simply took a large gulp of wine.
She paused for a moment. "Did you come looking for Chen Changsheng, Big Sister Aqing?"
"Not entirely," Aqing said. "I also wanted to come back and see you all, and to see my Peach Grove."
"The Peach Grove is doing fine. The people from Qingxian Temple are keeping an eye on it. Even though it has declined, it is still a Daoist Gate of Immortal Practitioners, so no one dares to cause trouble for them."
"Mm..."
"But Chen Changsheng isn't here anymore."
"He hasn't returned to Qingshan City in many years," Yu Hongjin said. "Anyway, it's been a long time. Ten years or so... um, I'm not sure. Maybe twenty years? Sigh, I don't remember."
"Has it really been that long..."
"Yeah. The years are ever impermanent, you get used to it."
Yu Hongjin said without a care.
She seemed very calm.
It seemed that after Sister Yun left, she was no longer able to keep track of the passing years, and couldn't remember things so clearly anymore.
