Yu Hongdou found the old master deeply strange.

And the Chen Changsheng he spoke of was stranger still.

He could clearly sense that Jing Wuya was quite familiar with Mister Chen, yet whenever the man opened his mouth, his only answer was, "I don't know."

In truth, Jing Wuya simply did not know how to judge him.

He found Chen Changsheng far too bizarre.

Never had he seen heaven and earth bow to a cultivator like that—words become law as spoken, heaven and earth responding in kind, as if the very world belonged to him.

That was why he thought perhaps Yu Hongdou could pull it off.

Despite the sheer absurdity of their conversation, Yu Hongdou still gave it a try, driven solely by Jing Wuya's relentless urging.

So, he really did try.

Yu Hongdou found Jing Wuya's idea absurd, holding little hope that it would change anything.

Standing atop the city wall, Yu Hongdou looked at the Old Sword Cultivator beside him and asked, "What should I say?"

The Old Sword Cultivator took a swig of wine. "Just beg the heavens to withdraw this punishment."

"It's that simple?"

"Yes, that simple."

Yu Hongdou rolled his eyes at him, then casually brought his hands together. Pleading to the sky, he said, "I beg the heavens to withdraw this punishment and spare these innocent people..."

"Idiot, you have to state your name," Jing Wuya corrected.

"Oh, right..."

Yu Hongdou prepared to try again.

But as he raised his hands, he suddenly froze.

The drifting snow fluttered down, a few flakes landing on his shoulder.

But those were the very last. In a matter of breaths, the remaining snow in the sky finished falling. Looking around, there were no more flakes swirling in the vast expanse above.

"Say it!" Jing Wuya prompted.

Yu Hongdou stared blankly at the scene, snapping out of his daze only when Jing Wuya spoke.

He simply said, "The snow stopped."

"Huh?"

Jing Wuya paused and looked up.

The sky was entirely clear of snow.

The snow had actually stopped.

Jing Wuya stared at the sky in a daze.

He pulled Yu Hongdou aside, his gaze darting back and forth between the firmament and the boy.

He found it completely unbelievable.

Even though Jing Wuya had anticipated this might happen, actually witnessing it made his heart tremble.

"It actually worked..."

Jing Wuya's gaze landed on Yu Hongdou.

Yu Hongdou squirmed under the scrutiny. He pursed his lips and said, "Maybe it was a coincidence?"

Jing Wuya opened his mouth to reply, paused to think, and finally murmured, "Perhaps it really was..."

Frankly, he was more than willing to believe it was a coincidence.

As the heavy snow ceased, the citizens within the city and the refugees outside erupted into cheers.

"The snow stopped!"

"The heavens have eyes! The snow stopped, hahaha!"

"Will it start falling again?"

"Let it stay like this. Don't snow anymore... please don't snow anymore..."

Yet underlying the joy was a deep worry. Previously, the heavy snow had stopped for only half a day before falling once more. No one knew what would happen this time.

The citizens and refugees waited with bated breath.

Hours passed. Half the day slipped by...

The sky darkened into the dead of night, and finally gave way to dawn.

For an entire day, not a single snowflake fell.

Everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"It really stopped!"

People wept tears of joy. They truly did not know how they would have survived if the snow had continued.

The Imperial Court finally began organizing disaster relief. With the snow gone, everything became vastly easier.

Wealthy families in Shangjing City set up charity kitchens to distribute porridge and provide aid to the refugees.

Everything was beginning to look up.

Within the Imperial Palace.

Upon hearing the snow had stopped, Yan Nantian finally breathed a sigh of relief.

His hand trembled as it held his brush. Perhaps it was guilt, or perhaps he had simply been at a loss on how to solve the crisis. Only now that the snow had ceased did he feel slightly at ease.

That night, he sought out Wang Yingying.

Still weak, Wang Yingying had only awoken that afternoon. Hearing that the snow had raged for seven days and seven nights, she had been stricken with worry.

"The Heavens took pity on the people, unable to bear their suffering... boundless heavenly honored one..."

Wang Yingying let out a long exhale, finally setting her mind at ease.

"Perfected One," Yan Nantian said, "our great endeavor is accomplished. We need only focus on the disaster relief now. It won't be long before the world forgets all about this."

"Congratulations, Your Majesty."

Yan Nantian held the Imperial Seal in his hands, gazing far into the distance. He wasn't looking at the sky above, but at the Way of Longevity and Immortality.

The blizzards weren't the only disaster to end; the floods ravaging Jiangnan had also come to a halt. As the floodwaters receded, the Local Government and Magistrate's Office across the regions began to organize relief and reconstruction efforts.

Slowly, the public's grievances quieted down, and the memorials submitted by the lower officials lost their frantic urgency.

Yu Hongdou saw all of this unfold with his own eyes.

He found it all rather absurd.

Surely, none of this had anything to do with him.

Yet on the city wall that day, the snow had stopped the very second he voiced his plea. Even the floods in Jiangnan had halted at that exact moment.

"It's unbelievable..."

Yu Hongdou tried to convince himself that it was a mere coincidence.

But whenever Jing Wuya looked at him, the man's occasional knowing smile made Yu Hongdou suspect that it wasn't a coincidence at all.

Once again, he found himself burning with curiosity about Chen Changsheng.

Just how capable must a cultivator be for the Heavenly Dao to grant him face?

It was simply too absurd.

It went against the very concept of the Dao in Yu Hongdou's heart.

Jing Wuya treated him to wine for several days straight, getting dead drunk every single time.

Once the brothels reopened their doors, Jing Wuya returned to his old merry ways. He spent his days intoxicated by liquor or enraptured by women, living entirely without restraint.

Aside from drinking together, Yu Hongdou rarely spent time with him.

He spent most of his time helping the Local Government resettle the refugees, wanting to do whatever little he could.

The horrific scenes of people exchanging their children for food were still fresh in his memory. He hoped such suffering would never return; his only wish was for peace in the Mortal World, and peace for everyone in it.

One day, when Jing Wuya was somewhat sober, Yu Hongdou finally voiced the question that had been nagging at him. "This heavenly punishment—how exactly did it come about?"

"You don't know?"

"How would I?"

Seeing his genuine ignorance, Jing Wuya proceeded to explain.

Yu Hongdou froze in shock after hearing the tale. "Does that actually work? Can the Human Sovereign really set foot on the immortal path?"

Jing Wuya nodded. "He truly can!"

Yu Hongdou's mind reeled. "That... that..."

"The Human Sovereign has reaped the benefits," Jing Wuya said, "but the common people of the world are the ones paying the price."

"How so?"

"The human dao qi fortune is unlike any other power. The Heavenly Dao favors mortals, which is why qi destiny protects them from demons. But now, that qi destiny has been gathered into the Imperial Seal. It still exists, but it no longer shields the mortals of this dynasty."

"In the past, demons rarely took human lives because they feared the heavenly punishment brought down by that qi destiny. Now, they have nothing to fear. It means that human lives have truly become as worthless as grass."
