Yu Hongjin closed the doors of the Wine Tavern on time.
On her way out, she filled a wine pot to take back.
Ruyi had been drinking more often lately and always asked her to bring some back.
"Ruyi, your wine."
Yu Hongjin called out from the door.
Dong Chiyu opened the door, reached out to take it, and asked, "Thanks for the trouble, little Jin'er. How many silver taels was it? I'll go get them."
Yu Hongjin shook her head and said, "We're family. There's no need for silver taels."
"I'm heading back."
Yu Hongjin waved her hand and immediately returned to her own courtyard.
Holding the wine pot, Dong Chiyu looked at Ruyi and said, "You are not allowed to drink anymore."
Ruyi blinked. She stood up and pleaded, "Just a tiny sip. Just one sip."
Dong Chiyu put the wine pot away. "Not even a single sip."
Ruyi scratched her head, feeling a bit of a headache.
"I'm already this old, what's wrong with enjoying a few sips of wine?"
"Not allowed!"
"Blockhead, you're so annoying."
Dong Chiyu shot her a glance. "No more wine, and you need to move around more. Sitting in the courtyard basking in the sun all day, you're not even as active as Lihua."
Ruyi opened her mouth to retort, but instead sighed, "Lihua... speaking of which, Lihua is still in Shangjing City."
Dong Chiyu sat down and said, "She has so many kittens and grand-kittens to take care of. How would she find the time to come back?"
Ruyi thought about it and said, "Lihua really has a massive household to manage now. Before, even the noble consorts in the Imperial Palace sent people to invite them to catch mice, and they even adopted a few of the little ones into the palace."
"That's just because Lihua is capable."
"You say that as if I'm utterly useless. No matter what, I still managed to snag the title of commandery princess."
"A commandery princess without a fiefdom."
"So what? What does it matter if I don't have a fiefdom? Who in Shangjing City would dare offend me?"
Dong Chiyu shook her head helplessly, too lazy to bicker with her.
Ruyi yawned, smacked her lips, and said, "I finally understand those people who get married and have children. Growing old without a son or a daughter really is quite lonely."
Dong Chiyu said, "I told you to adopt one before, but you just let the matter drop."
"Sigh..."
Ruyi smacked her lips again and muttered, "It's not too late now..."
Dong Chiyu paused, looking at her.
"Are you really going to raise one?"
Asked so directly, Ruyi hesitated.
"Why are you hesitating again?"
"I'm not..."
"I was just thinking..." Ruyi started to say, then added, "If we adopt one, and then shortly after, the two of us pass away... how sad would that child be?"
Hearing this, Dong Chiyu paused and fell silent as well.
She reached out and patted Ruyi's back, comforting her, "It's fine. Let's not think about such sad things."
Ruyi pursed her lips, resting her chin on her hand as she fell deep into thought.
The sun shifted westward.
A long while later, Ruyi lifted her head and said, "Let's adopt one."
Dong Chiyu came back to herself. She paused briefly, then agreed.
"All right!"
"Blockhead, why aren't you questioning me anymore?"
"I support whatever you say."
Ruyi blinked. She let out a breath, her eyes turning slightly red, though she fought back her tears.
"You're really annoying."
Dong Chiyu said nothing, only feeling that Ruyi's complaints were entirely unreasonable.
Early the next morning, the two of them left the city and headed up the mountain to Qingxian Temple.
Daoist Xuanzhen agreed to the matter.
About half a month later, he brought a child to meet Ruyi and Dong Chiyu.
It was a little girl. She used to have a family living outside Qingshan City. Her father was addicted to gambling. After racking up debts, he sold her mother to brokers. Later, unable to pay off the rest, he was beaten half to death. He had tried to sell his daughter as well, but he passed away before he got the chance.
This little girl had gone up the mountain to dig for taro, and that was when Priest Xuanzhen found her and took her in.
The girl's name was Zhu Guqiu. She was rather timid around strangers.
But naturally, this old name could no longer be used.
"From now on, you'll take my surname."
Ruyi held her small hand, but then she paused, looking over at Dong Chiyu. "Should she take my surname or yours?"
Dong Chiyu blinked. "You're the head of the household, so of course she takes yours."
Ruyi hesitated, unable to make up her mind.
She then turned to Priest Xuanzhen and said, "We aren't sure about the surname yet, so why don't you pick a given name for this girl, Priest Xuanzhen?"
Xuanzhen paused briefly, then smiled. "If the commandery princess asks this poor Daoist to choose, I'm afraid the name might lean a bit too Daoist."
"That's fine."
"In this poor Daoist's opinion, why not call her Xuanji?"
"That works!"
Ruyi was very satisfied with this. Taking Xuanji by the hand, they headed down the mountain.
While walking along the road, Ruyi suddenly seemed to realize something.
"I've got it!"
Ruyi turned her head to look at Xuanji beside her. "From now on, you have two surnames. On normal days, your surname is Dong. But when you do something bad, your surname is Wang, and you take my surname. You'll be called Wang Xuanji."
Dong Chiyu pinched her arm. "How can you be so absurd? How can a child have two surnames?"
Ruyi blinked. "What's wrong with my little granddaughter having two surnames?"
She was absolutely lawless.
Dong Chiyu let out a helpless laugh. She rubbed Xuanji's head and said, "Don't listen to her, Xuanji. Your Big Sister is full of nonsense."
Xuanji gripped the hem of her shirt, feeling a little scared, and gave an earnest nod.
"Listen to your Big Sister. Your Second Sister is just a coward."
"You really are..."
"Hey, hey, Blockhead, don't hit me! I was wrong, I was wrong..."
"Always so full of nonsense."
Over in the Imperial Observatory within the Dajing Imperial Palace.
Yan Nantian sat cross-legged there. Ultimately, he was someone favored by qi destiny, so his Cultivation journey had been smooth sailing.
Wang Yingying, wearing a set of ordinary clothes, sat off to the side, quietly waiting for Yan Nantian to wake up.
When Yan Nantian awoke, he took a deep breath and said, "The Imperial Heart Manual formulated by the Director is truly extraordinary. It has benefited me greatly."
Wang Yingying shook her head. "I didn't come up with it entirely on my own. I have the Daoist cultivators of Quanshan to thank for it."
Hearing these words, Yan Nantian glanced at Wang Yingying and said, "The Director hails from Qingxian Temple. If so, then why give Quanshan such an opportunity?"
Wang Yingying spoke frankly, "The karma lies here, making the future difficult to observe. I, Wang Yingying, have long since ceased to be a Daoist cultivator of Qingxian Temple; I am merely a person of the mortal world."
Yan Nantian understood her meaning upon hearing this.
She was likely afraid of implicating Qingxian Temple.
"You have worked hard, Director."
Wang Yingying shook her head without answering directly, instead shifting the topic. "Your Majesty, matters in the royal court have grown incredibly chaotic lately. The reach of several Cabinet Elders has stretched further and further. Moreover, I caught a glimpse of Grand Secretary Qin from afar; he carries a trace of demonic qi on him. I don't know if he merely encountered a demon, or if he is secretly involved with demons."
Yan Nantian raised an eyebrow slightly. "A bunch of old fools, and yet they still aren't satisfied."
He stood up and commanded, "I will trouble the Director to inform the head eunuch of the palace to notify those bastards that we hold court tomorrow!"
"It would be better for Your Majesty to tell them yourself."
"I trust the Director. In this Great Jing, the Director stands beneath one person alone—me."
Hearing such words, Wang Yingying sighed softly in her heart. She felt things shouldn't be this way, yet it was already too late to avoid it.
