Yu Hongjin frowned slightly at those words.
Jing Wuya raised his hand. A wisp of Magical Power lingered at his fingertips. This trace of energy was incredibly pure; the number of cultivators in this world who possessed such Magical Power could be counted on one hand.
"You know Chen Changsheng?" Jing Wuya asked.
Yu Hongjin paused. At the mention of this man from her past, she simply replied, "I know him, but we aren't close."
"Is that so?"
Seeing her reaction, Jing Wuya didn't press the matter.
It wasn't hard to tell that this Spirit of Water and Wood in front of him was reluctant to bring up Mister Chen.
Yu Hongdou blinked, confused as to why the two had suddenly fallen silent.
Seeing the heavy atmosphere,
Yu Hongdou was led forward.
As they walked, he grew curious. "How did you get mixed up with the demons of Hongyuan Tianxia?"
Yu Hongjin quickly explained the whole story from beginning to end.
Yu Hongdou paused, his brow furrowing. "I'm afraid this isn't right. Since you accepted their gifts, people will inevitably gossip and lump you in with Hongyuan Tianxia."
"People?" Yu Hongjin pointed around them. "Where do you see any people?"
Yu Hongdou froze, falling silent.
It was true. There didn't seem to be anyone left around here.
Yu Hongjin said, "Those demons and I mind our own business; well water does not run into river water. They are them, and I am me. As long as I know where I stand in my own heart, I don't need anyone else lecturing me. Right?"
"Right, right."
Yu Hongdou nodded. Yu Hongjin patted his head and said, "The child is teachable."
The two sat down and soon began chatting about the past.
Back then, Yu Hongjin's qi destiny had plunged into chaos. She was taken away by the Ink Dragon Lord and vanished without a trace. It was only after many years had passed that Yu Hongdou finally managed to dig up any news about her.
Yu Hongjin spoke up, "Mo Yuan took me to see Mister Chen. This affliction of mine was probably cured by Mister Chen."
"Probably?"
"Yeah. I was unconscious at the time, so I don't know what happened. Mo Yuan never told me anything, which I assume was Mister Chen's intention."
Yu Hongdou smacked his lips. "Why wouldn't he tell you?"
"The whole situation is just a mess. Sigh..." Yu Hongjin said. "I don't know how to explain it. Mister Chen is rather contrary sometimes, and I'm just as contrary. There's no explaining it."
Hearing this, Yu Hongdou smacked his lips again and stopped asking.
It seemed something unpleasant must have happened between them.
"Let's not talk about that," she said. "By the way, what are you and that old man doing around here? Slaying demons and vanquishing devils?"
"No."
Yu Hongdou replied, "The Mortal World has been too chaotic lately. It isn't a safe place to stay for now. Elder Jing and I plan on heading south to the Flying Boat Ferry. We'll take a Flying Vessel to the Immortal Realm to experience that vast new world."
"The Cultivation World, huh..."
Yu Hongjin muttered, "I went there once too, but I turned back halfway."
"You've been there?"
"To the Desolate Sea. I went with Mo Yuan at the time. It was far too dangerous there, and Mo Yuan couldn't quite protect me, so he sent me back."
The two kept chatting, reminiscing about the past.
Meanwhile, Jing Wuya sat at the entrance of the market. He took out his Wine Gourd and took a swig.
His gaze swept over the blooming lotus pond, and his turbulent thoughts naturally quieted down.
"To think the Mortal World holds such a breathtaking place. How did I miss this when heading south back then?"
The Old Sword Cultivator chuckled. The liquor burned as it slid down his throat, a sharp bite that left him intoxicated.
It was hard to say whether he was drunk on the wine or drunk on the scenery.
He found himself thinking of Chen Changsheng.
He figured Chen Changsheng must have seen this place long ago. To find such a beautiful spot and not breathe a word of it to anyone—that man really knew how to hide things.
Then again...
Where had Chen Changsheng gone?
Jing Wuya didn't understand. A man who so loved the Red Dust had seemingly vanished without a trace over the past few decades. For years, not a single scrap of news had emerged about him.
If he hadn't seen the divine sense hidden within Yu Hongdou's Sea of Consciousness, he probably would have assumed Chen Changsheng was already dead.
...
After a sudden upheaval, Wang He found his body bound by numerous Restrictive Seals.
Stripping off his shirt revealed ancient characters and runes covering his back and torso. They were densely packed and vividly clear.
Jian Shenghua stared at these ancient characters, his eyes going wide.
After a long while, he finally uttered, "Exquisite beyond compare!"
It was his first time seeing such a dense Ancient Character Formation. It was also his first time learning that these ancient characters could be drawn directly onto a person, using the human body itself as the foundation for the formation.
"Legend has it that in ancient times, ascetic monks of the Buddhist Schools would carve the Diamond Sutra into their flesh to ensure their immortality. They walked the world, enduring bitter torment while spreading the Dharma. These ancient characters are different tunes played with equal skill."
Wang He pulled his shirt back on. He turned his head and spat, "Do you think this is a good thing? That man surnamed Chen only used these Divine Abilities because he saw I was about to explode! It may have suppressed the Demon Pill, but now I suffer unbearable agony every waking moment. My arms and body are covered in cracks. These ancient characters are just holding me together like a cage. Otherwise, I would have blown to pieces!"
Jian Shenghua simply laughed. "You're getting an incredible deal and still complaining! Once you fully digest that Demon Pill, you will truly be able to claim the title of sovereign!"
"What use is that?" Wang He retorted. "I seek the Great Dao, but not by pulling up seedlings to help them grow. My foundation is damaged, and my path to the Great Dao is severed! How am I supposed to seek it now? My dao heart is trembling, and sooner or later, it will shatter entirely."
Jian Shenghua sighed repeatedly. "You really are... Sigh..."
He honestly couldn't understand it. Such a heaven-defying fortune had fallen right into Wang He's lap, yet the man was actually complaining about it.
Jian Shenghua said, "If you don't want it, I'll gladly take it! Perhaps he saw that I was a demonic cultivator and realized the Demon Pill would be useless to me, so he chose you instead. Sigh, really... what a waste..."
He felt deeply frustrated but had nowhere to vent it.
Wang He couldn't be bothered to argue with him. He simply said, "But speaking of which, why did that man surnamed Chen do this? Isn't he a cultivator of the Righteous Path? Why would he possess a Demon Pill like this? Moreover, the techniques I saw him use earlier felt somewhat similar to the demonic path. Has he succumbed to the demonic path?"
"Who knows?"
Jian Shenghua said, "I've been searching for this person for years and found absolutely nothing. I never expected him to deliver himself right to our doorstep."
Wang He pursed his lips. "That man surnamed Chen has vanished, and the Demon Sovereign has yet to return. Both the Righteous Path and the demonic path have lost their titans."
"Do you think the Demon Sovereign and that man surnamed Chen are secretly dueling? And that you and I are merely game pieces on their chessboard?"
Jian Shenghua paused before saying, "Stop overthinking it. Even if we are game pieces, we're at least prominent ones. As long as we aren't discarded pawns, that's enough."
Wang He let out a long sigh. "It truly is a case of Immortals fighting while mortals suffer the disaster."
"If you say that again, I'm going to summon my Immortal Sword and cut you down!"
"Sigh..."
