Yan Nantian stood upon the city wall, watching the demons and monsters rampage below. Martial artists strode out, but to these demons, their sabers and swords were no better than rotting wood, shattering on impact.
Gaping maws opened, and the defenseless martial artists were lost to the demons' jaws as blood sprayed out, scattering across the earth.
Yan Nantian's heart shuddered at the sight.
Then, a sword was offered to him.
He turned to see Wang Yingying—the same Wang Yingying he had once conversed with so freely in the Imperial Observatory.
Her face was weathered now, marred by a new scar that, according to her, was a careless mistake from a previous battle with a demon.
"Fellow Daoist, take the sword. This is the karma you and I have sown."
Within that Dream Method world.
"Because back then, you were Your Majesty."
With serendipity upon him, he had attained the great dao. Transitioning from martial arts into the dao, he joined one of the Immortal Sects, and everything started anew from the unknown.
"Every wrong has its source and every debt has its debtor; I will simply pay it back!"
The inner demon laughed aloud and said, "Have you forgotten? You and I are one and the same. I am your heart, and I am you. You cannot kill me."
Another self.
"Enough of your nonsense!"
It was as though the person he saw was his own past self.
That cultivator who had once joined an Immortal Sect had now risen to prominence, his name echoing across the realm. Everyone knew of a dao fanatic who foolishly dreamed of changing this world.
Under Wang Yingying's watchful gaze, Yan Nantian charged into the horde of rampaging demons outside the city walls.
What exactly was the purpose of his existence?
He could not figure it out.
He searched in all directions, yet failed to find a single trace of his inner demon.
Yet the inner demon had not fled; instead, it revealed itself to meet him.
Chen Changsheng himself could no longer tell the difference.
He practiced sword arts, held the dao in his heart, and stepped into the jianghu of that Mortal World.
Was he truly doing it for the people of the world, or for his dao, for his own selfish desires?
He did not understand Yan Nantian's thoughts—he could not fathom what this once high-and-mighty Your Majesty was thinking.
He was nothing more than a game piece, his ending predetermined by others from the moment of his birth.
He shook his head and left the area.
This was a Yan Nantian that Wang Yingying had never seen.
Understanding dawned on him. He was no longer obsessed with the fame and wealth of this world, nor was he any sort of heralded prodigy, but simply a cultivator in this vast world, single-mindedly seeking the dao.
Watching these scenes unfold, Chen Changsheng suddenly sank into deep contemplation.
Perhaps he had touched upon the great dao, causing the youth to seemingly remember something.
Yet he did not know what to say.
The inner demon stopped its hands and said, "Zhao Yuqing, what are you thinking? I want to change this world, to make it interesting, so it is no longer so dull and simple. Is this not exactly what we wanted?!"
Yet, to Zhao Yuqing's surprise...
Chen Changsheng had fallen into contemplation about himself.
He couldn't help but feel that the man before his eyes was repeating the same mistakes. Everything he pursued was a lie, just like Chen Changsheng himself.
Zhao Yuqing pursued his inner demon.
He wanted to bring absolute order to this world.
...
He questioned himself once more.
"I sowed it?"
Gripping the sword tightly, he leaped down from the city tower.
But it was no hindrance; he could take his time. Though he could not distinguish which was the inner demon, he would always feel a warning in his heart the moment he drew near.
Daoist Sanyuan looked over, finding the figure leaping from the city tower incredibly familiar.
Wrapped in killing intent and blood vigor, he channeled his Magical Power into his sword, slaying demons and purging monsters.
Zhao Yuqing looked at him coldly and said, "This is what you wanted!"
He froze for a moment, then asked, "Why didn't you tell me back then?"
He offered a bitter smile and shook his head.
That was until this day. Upon arriving in the Mortal World, upon the demon-ravaged lands of the Southern Region, he finally sensed the existence of his inner demon.
"The world has its principles, and the heavens must have their rules."
They exchanged over a dozen blows, neither able to gain the upper hand over the other.
He wished to embody the Heavenly Dao, to merge with the great daos of the world, and become a great dao himself.
Somewhat surprised, Zhao Yuqing drew the Wooden Sword at his waist and leveled it at the inner demon. "You are truly bold! I hadn't come looking for you, yet you delivered yourself to my door!"
That was himself.
Daoist Sanyuan could not tell for sure.
Perhaps, in the very beginning, this was exactly how Yan Nantian had looked, fighting his way from the bitter cold lands of the Border Pass all the way to Shangjing.
"Does my existence depend on the heavens?"
...
The inner demon fixed its gaze upon him and said, "Have you forgotten the world we saw within Chen Changsheng's Dream Method? Is that state of the world not exactly what we strive for? All things possess a spirit, all matters hold opportunity, and there are thousands of great daos that anyone can pursue. All things are governed by reason and rules; humans, demons, immortals, and buddhas all have their great daos. Is this not what we wanted?!"
He fell into another long daze in that instant.
Was this real or was it fake?
In his daze, he felt a sense of familiarity.
It was as if he were looking at another self.
The sun and moon cycled; the years slipped away.
Upon a single disagreement, Zhao Yuqing struck with his sword.
At this moment, Yan Nantian seemed to understand.
But the truth was exactly as the inner demon had claimed: it was Zhao Yuqing, and Zhao Yuqing was the demon. As they fought one another, whether in daoist spells, sword arts, or Divine Abilities, both knew the other inside out.
In a brief, dizzying moment, Yan Nantian understood many things.
He became one of the mortal masses and stepped toward the great dao.
After all, this inner demon had been born from his very own heart.
Perhaps the commoners of the Mortal World were not entirely wrong.
Looking up at the heavens that day.
Grasping this great dao in his hands, Chen Changsheng suddenly felt the urge to let go.
The seed planted back then had now grown into adulthood.
"I am you!"
In a mere ten years, the youth had been like a fish leaping over the dragon gate, rising to become an illustrious prodigy renowned throughout the world.
This entire catastrophe was truly because of him; it was his selfish pursuit of the dao and immortality that had turned the world into this state.
Still in a daze, Yan Nantian accepted the sword.
But the inner demon spoke up, "Why wouldn't I dare?"
Wang Yingying said bluntly, "From the moment you stepped out of the Imperial Palace, you were no longer Your Majesty. Has fellow Daoist ever wondered why, in all the years past, the world has never seen a demon plague of this magnitude?"
Zhao Yuqing spoke up, "That was a lie!!"
He understood clearly that this was a dream, but seeing that cultivator fighting tooth and nail for a single conviction, it felt so incredibly real.
The inner demon before his eyes looked exactly like him.
He could not help but look at his own hands.
In a flash of insight, Yan Nantian understood completely.
The inner demon looked at him and said, "But couldn't we make it a reality?"
The inner demon raised its head and advanced step by step, saying, "Since this world is so dull, why don't we rewrite it? Let us make this world equal and orderly! Let us make every person like a dragon, and usher all of creation into a magnificent new era!"
"We will battle humans, battle demons, battle all of creation, and battle the vast heavens themselves!"
