Monk Jiming woke and headed straight for the Cultivation World, relentlessly pursued by the dao rhythms of heaven and earth.
As a man who had crossed the long river of history, he was ultimately rejected by heaven and earth.
Ning Bufan's soul instinctively resisted. This was a clash between two souls; he wanted to reclaim his own body, but this time, things were vastly different from what he had expected.
The monk was no longer as easy to fend off as before. Instead, he was incomparably resolute. No matter how hard Ning Bufan fought, he was helpless against him. Under the immense backlash, Ning Bufan's soul lost consciousness.
Jiming had also exerted his utmost effort, rushing here before that fleeting opportunity could dissipate.
In midair, his strength suddenly gave out, and he plummeted downward.
"Boom!!"
Thunder roared. The moment Jiming vanished, the dao rhythms of heaven and earth scattered with him. The booming thunder sounded like a warning, striking terror into the heart.
"Is that a person?"
Straining his eyes, he realized it looked like a person.
Kong Ru hesitated. He originally wanted to walk away, but after a moment's thought, he said, "A gentleman cannot simply stand by and watch a man die!"
He abruptly turned around and sprinted in the direction of the fall.
After scouring the woods for quite some time, Kong Ru finally found the man who had tumbled from the sky lying in a pool of water.
"He isn't dead, is he?!"
Seeing his state, Kong Ru used a sturdy branch to fish him out.
He checked the man's breathing.
"He's still breathing!"
Overjoyed, Kong Ru quickly set about treating his injuries. He scavenged some herbs in the forest, mashed them to extract their juices, and fed them to the man.
Afterward, he built a campfire nearby and settled in for a long wait.
Following a night of absolute silence...
Ning Bufan's fingers twitched slightly. He coughed a few times and woke up.
He felt a splitting headache, and when he forced his eyes open, they were completely bloodshot.
"Eh..."
The dozing Kong Ru jolted awake.
"You're awake." Kong Ru let out a yawn, looking utterly exhausted.
Ning Bufan stared blankly. He took in his current situation, glancing around in bewilderment.
Where was this? And how did he get here?
Regaining his senses slightly, he asked, "Did you save me?"
Kong Ru nodded. "I saw you fall out of the sky..."
Kong Ru explained the whole sequence of events and answered Ning Bufan's questions, letting him figure out exactly where he was now.
Ning Bufan was stunned. "This is the Cultivation World?" he muttered. "How did I end up here in the blink of an eye?!"
It was truly hard for him to believe. He had passed out before, but nothing like this had ever happened.
"How did you end up falling here, Fellow Daoist? I don't see any injuries on you, and it doesn't look like you were being hunted down by enemies."
"I..."
Ning Bufan didn't know how to explain it either. He just shook his head. "I can't remember."
Kong Ru paused. "You can't remember?"
"Yeah. After I fainted, I completely forgot everything."
"I see..."
Kong Ru thought for a long time before asking, "Then what are your plans now, Fellow Daoist?"
Ning Bufan hesitated, then said, "I don't know either."
Kong Ru said, "I am currently wandering the world. If you have nowhere else to go, Fellow Daoist, why don't we travel together?"
Ning Bufan found the man rather abrupt, getting the distinct feeling that he was trying to rope him into something.
Kong Ru scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed. "To be honest, it's really because I struggle to protect myself, so I wanted to find a traveling companion."
"So that's how it is."
Ning Bufan understood. "I don't have anywhere to go right now anyway," he said. "Besides, you saved my life. They say a drop of water in need should be repaid with a springing fountain. Since you're worried about your safety, it's only right that I protect you along the way."
Hearing this, Kong Ru hurriedly thanked him. "Thank you, Fellow Daoist!"
"Don't mention it."
"I'm Kong Ru. What's your name?"
"Ning Bufan."
At that moment, Ning Bufan suddenly felt a wave of relief. The pressure weighing down his Sea of Consciousness vanished in an instant. He had never felt this way before, as if he had been carrying a massive boulder on his back and had finally managed to set it down.
This change baffled Ning Bufan, but he couldn't figure out the reason behind it.
...
The chess game within Reincarnation was nearing its end.
However, the two of them were playing slower and slower. Every move required a long period of contemplation. The passage of time here was erratic; during their longest pause, the Demon Sovereign had pondered for a full three months.
Chen Changsheng was the same. Both of them felt tremendous pressure from this game. They remained evenly matched, neither able to gain the upper hand.
Until this day, when Chen Changsheng looked up.
Sensing something, the Demon Sovereign looked at Chen Changsheng and said, "This game hasn't finished yet. Why so soon..."
"This Chen will return shortly. It won't delay anything. You can take your time to think, Demon Sovereign."
"Very well."
The Demon Sovereign waved his hand, seemingly urging Chen Changsheng to hurry up and leave, as if his presence would only delay his calculations for the next move.
Chen Changsheng shook his head helplessly, and then his figure vanished from Between Reincarnation.
Seeing this, the Demon Sovereign glanced around. After confirming that Chen Changsheng was gone, he immediately moved over to sit on Chen Changsheng's side of the board.
He studied the entire chessboard. The two forces were evenly matched, constantly tearing at and entangling with one another. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call the battle brutal. But even so, it was merely trading injury for injury, victory for victory.
If this trend continued...
The only outcome would be a draw.
This was not the result the Demon Sovereign wanted to see. In his entire life, he had only ever known victory or defeat; there was no such thing as a draw.
He slowly adopted the perspective of the white pieces, taking Chen Changsheng's point of view to analyze the game, attempting to find a flaw.
But just as he was deep in thought...
A voice rang out.
"Has the Heavenly Sovereign left?"
The Demon Sovereign turned around and saw a man.
He furrowed his brows in surprise.
Jiuxiaozi walked over and cupped his hands in greeting toward the Demon Sovereign.
The Demon Sovereign narrowed his eyes. "You certainly have a lot of nerve, actually leaving a strand of consciousness within Reincarnation."
Jiuxiaozi stepped forward. "This is my Cultivation," he said. "This path has always been endless. Within the world of the Dream Method, Reincarnation is incomplete. This place is the foundation of Reincarnation, and it is exactly what I lack. I left a strand of consciousness here solely to comprehend Reincarnation."
The Demon Sovereign looked at the man and couldn't help but fall into deep thought.
A moment later, the Demon Sovereign looked up. "This is a chess game between him and me. It's not your place to interfere!"
"You misunderstand, Your Excellency."
Jiuxiaozi shook his head and said, "I came only for the rules of the Dao. For nothing else."
