People often say that life is full of reunions.
But sometimes, for someone like Chen Changsheng, a reunion was an extraordinary luxury.
He never knew which awakening would be the one where an old acquaintance was simply gone, leaving no chance to ever meet again.
Chen Changsheng often pondered the meaning of his existence.
He often called himself unbearably mundane. Yet thinking on it now, he fell short of even common mortals. At least they had things they desired and pursuits of their own. Even if those pursuits were vague, they were still far, far better off than Chen Changsheng.
Within that Reincarnation, Chen Changsheng closed his eyes and fell into a dream.
The dream held countless reunions. It was as if he had returned to Qiuyue Fang and Qingshan City, living out those pleasant, carefree days.
But in an instant, all of it was shattered.
It felt as if he had been violently dragged out of the water. He woke gasping for breath, unable to gather his wits for a long time.
Chen Changsheng looked up at him.
The Demon Sovereign glared with resentment. "Look at the state of you. I pulled you out of that grand dream, and not so you could just paint yourself another one!"
"Look at yourself! How are you any different from those who willingly wallow in their own ruin?"
The Demon Sovereign stepped forward and seized Chen Changsheng by the collar. "Only you can change all this! Do you understand? Only you! So how did you turn into such a useless lump of mud? I pinned all my hopes on you. Do you understand? You have to live! Not lose yourself in a dream and willingly be a piece of trash!"
Chen Changsheng reached up and shoved away the hand gripping his collar. "Why save me at all? If I sink into a dream, you can go do whatever you wish. Wouldn't that be better?"
The Demon Sovereign stared at him in silence.
Chen Changsheng held his gaze. "Why bother hiding it? Wasn't this your layout from the very beginning? Your attempt to seize my body was a fake. You never intended to overthrow the Heavenly Dao yourself. You just treat me as a wielded saber and sword. If the sword rusts, you sharpen it. Everything you did down in the Mortal World—wasn't that just you sharpening the sword?"
Seeing his intentions laid bare, the Demon Sovereign stopped hiding them. He stepped forward, fixing his eyes on Chen Changsheng. "You figured this out long ago, didn't you?"
Chen Changsheng turned his head away. "The Great Sage is doomed to fall to Tathagata. No matter how vast the Celestial Court, it cannot rival the entirety of Shanhai. The story was arranged from the very beginning."
"Whether it's you or the Heavenly Dao," he continued, "you refuse to let go of This Chen. What's the point? I don't share your ambitions. Right now, This Chen only wishes to focus on Cultivation and witness the vastness of this world."
The Demon Sovereign looked at him and suddenly burst into laughter. "Cultivation?"
"How ridiculous."
"What exactly are you going to cultivate?" the Demon Sovereign asked. "Do you really think that by tempering your mind and body, you can sever these seven emotions and six desires?"
"What are you thinking?!"
The Demon Sovereign said, "You and I were born from emotions and desires. How could we ever sever them? This so-called supreme detachment—neither you nor I will ever be able to walk that path."
Chen Changsheng looked back at him. "Do you think This Chen doesn't understand that?" he asked calmly.
The Demon Sovereign froze, looking at Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng just shook his head, offering not another word.
He departed from this Dream Method. When he came to his senses, he was no longer within it.
Chen Changsheng walked into that Reincarnation.
An inexplicable sense of defeat welled up within the Demon Sovereign.
He sat down, thinking back on his long years of scheming. It felt as if, in a single instant, all his efforts had been washed away.
It was as if doubts had sprouted in his own heart, just as they had for Chen Changsheng.
What were they really seeking?
In the end, they were all just like madmen pushed to a dead end.
The world was vast.
After awakening, Chen Changsheng traveled to Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain to visit Azure Fire.
Azure Fire had been living quite comfortably there; no one made things difficult for him.
Seeing this put Chen Changsheng at ease.
"You should stay here from now on. How about it?"
Azure Fire seemed a little lost at the suggestion. Its original intention had been to follow Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "This Chen cannot take you away."
He couldn't properly explain why. Azure Fire was terribly gloomy about it, but ultimately agreed to remain on Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain.
Chen Changsheng thus embarked on another stretch of his journey.
When he unrolled his Geographical Map and looked at it again, he realized that a single sheet of paper could never encompass this entire world.
The paper was simply too small.
When Chen Changsheng looked again, he realized just how insignificant he and the mountains around him truly were—so utterly minuscule that they were just a single speck on that Geographical Map.
"Who isn't like a speck of dust between heaven and earth?"
Chen Changsheng sighed softly, then set his brush to the paper.
He always found something for himself to do.
Even though living like this was very dull.
Along the way, Chen Changsheng did not meet many people. Most were fleeting encounters, scattering in the blink of an eye. He felt an aversion to this karma of the Red Dust; the deeper the bond, the more uneasy it made his heart.
He was running away, but wasn't running away a solution too? Not to mention, he only had this one path left to choose.
He, Chen Changsheng, was destined never to achieve supreme detachment. Even less could he sever his worldly emotions like Jiuxiaozi, for he himself was the severed seven emotions and six desires.
Chen Changsheng walked many roads.
Slowly, he accumulated more things.
A book box on his back, a conical straw hat on his head—only because the rain was too heavy. From south to north, Chen Changsheng had nearly walked to the end of the road.
This region naturally had an end. He had started at the Desolate Sea, and the end was exactly the same.
Opening the Geographical Map again, he saw that a vast expanse had already been sketched out, its boundaries and place names meticulously recorded.
But to the left and right, large swaths of blank space remained.
This region spanned tens of thousands of li from north to south. How could one see it clearly by walking it just once?
He had to keep walking forward.
Chen Changsheng rested for a few days in this fishing village by the Desolate Sea.
During these days, he would often fish by the shore. The wind and waves were fierce, yet the experience possessed its own unique charm.
The wine brewed by the local fishermen had a very different flavor. It was sharp, and plenty fiery.
And so Chen Changsheng drank his wine, gazing out over the boundless Desolate Sea.
Occasionally, he would reel in a fish and enjoy a full meal.
"Priest."
A dark-skinned young man walked over.
"Did the Priest catch any fish today?"
Chen Changsheng looked at the newcomer. This was the son of a fisherman in the village. Though not old, he was already able to go out to sea and catch fish himself; he was a capable young man.
"Not yet. The winds and waves are milder today, so the fish are all further out."
The young man said, "If you ask me, you should find a boat and head further out. The water here is too shallow. There aren't any big fish."
"Sometimes it comes down to luck," Chen Changsheng replied. "Who knows? A big fish might just wander close to the shore."
The young man sighed. "The Priest is a master, so naturally you're different from us. People like us, who rely on the sea to eat, don't have the time to do what the Priest does. The Priest doesn't fish in order to live."
Hearing these words, Chen Changsheng didn't know how to answer for a moment.
