Chen Changsheng and the Demon Sovereign had been playing chess within this Reincarnation for roughly sixty years.
The Demon Sovereign's chess skills had improved drastically compared to the past. With their wins evenly split, the two clashed fiercely over the board, neither willing to yield an inch.
Interestingly, both of them enjoyed playing fast.
Or perhaps the utter dullness of this Reincarnation had left them both obsessed with the game.
The game pieces fell onto the board in rapid succession.
"Clack, clack, clack..."
The sound rang out incessantly. Both men stared at the board in rapt concentration. Fast games were different from the rest; one misstep leads to misstep after misstep, but that was exactly what made them so interesting.
The game reached its hundred and third move.
The Demon Sovereign suddenly stopped.
"It's a draw."
Chen Changsheng nodded.
The Demon Sovereign let out a long breath and tossed his game piece back into the bowl. "How boring."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Isn't an evenly matched game the most interesting kind?"
"I advance, and so do you. We win half the time and draw just as often. I never have absolute certainty that I can cut you down."
The Demon Sovereign shook his head. "I'm not like you. You play chess like a gentleman, but I only want to win. If I can't sweep over my opponent with crushing force, this game loses its meaning."
Chen Changsheng paused. "We share the same origin, yet we seem like two extremes."
The Demon Sovereign chuckled. "What kind of extremes? Good and evil?"
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "More like our perspectives on things."
The Demon Sovereign gave a slight nod. He exhaled, snapping back to reality, and asked, "How many years has it been?"
Chen Changsheng thought back. "A few decades?"
The Demon Sovereign looked at him. "Time doesn't exist within this Reincarnation. We've been playing against each other for quite a few years now, but I wonder how that Immortal Peach is faring."
"I haven't seen him since he locked us in here," Chen Changsheng said.
The Demon Sovereign stroked his chin. "It's best that we haven't. That kid has a clear mind; he might be more ruthless than me and more decisive than you. Let him put an end to these dreary days of ours."
"You want to die?" Chen Changsheng asked.
The Demon Sovereign sighed. "Yeah. There's no point in living."
"A mayfly's long life is nothing but a curse. Death only erases a segment of memory. We might as well keep living, passing on to the next life, the next incarnation..."
"Isn't that exactly what you're doing?"
The Demon Sovereign looked at Chen Changsheng. "If you had to do it all over again, would you want to endlessly cycle through Reincarnation and rebirth like this?"
Faced with such a question, Chen Changsheng found himself at a loss for words.
After a moment of silence, he said, "Perhaps you're right."
"No matter what, we will keep living through lifetime after lifetime of the past, making it hard to distinguish the true self."
A smile tugged at the Demon Sovereign's lips. "The self, and only the self. That is the mindset of the demonic path."
Chen Changsheng looked up. "People like us, who cannot forget the six desires and seven emotions, will all eventually fall into the demonic path once we step into Cultivation."
"Well said."
The Demon Sovereign took a deep breath. "The only reason you and I are still alive in this world is because we still have lingering attachments in our hearts."
At those words, Chen Changsheng stilled his hand.
"Attachments?"
Chen Changsheng fell into thought.
It seemed he didn't have many left.
He looked at the Demon Sovereign. "What are you still attached to?"
The Demon Sovereign paused. Exhaling, he said, "Probably that foolish girl."
Chen Changsheng knew who he was talking about.
But he only pointed out, "Yet she seems quite disappointed in you."
"That's how it should be."
The Demon Sovereign said, "Throughout all these years, her figure has always been there. I only hope she gives up sooner rather than later. Instead of chasing after an illusory phantom like me, it would be better for her to live an ordinary life."
Hearing those words, Chen Changsheng couldn't help but think of Yunxiang.
He remained silent for a long time, saying no more.
At that moment, however, footsteps suddenly rang out from outside.
They looked over to see a figure dressed in plain clothes, his expression completely haggard.
Both Chen Changsheng and the Demon Sovereign were somewhat surprised to see him.
A smile curved the Demon Sovereign's lips. "A rare guest."
The man forced a strained smile.
Chen Changsheng said, "Come sit."
Chen Qi walked over and sat down before the chessboard.
His name was Chen Qi. He was the manifestation of the six desires and seven emotions that Jiuxiaozi had severed within that Dream Method—the very entity who later quietly escaped to the mortal world as the Immortal Peach.
The Demon Sovereign looked at him. "How many years has it been?"
"Sixty years have passed in the outside world," Chen Qi replied. "Twenty cycles of three years."
"What are you doing here?" the Demon Sovereign asked.
Chen Qi looked at the two men before him and asked, "Is the long life of a mayfly our fate? There is a sky beyond the sky, and yet another sky beyond that. When will there ever be an end?"
The Demon Sovereign looked at him, seemingly in a daze.
"Who knows?"
Chen Qi's current state was very poor. He had escaped from one world into the trap set by the Demon Sovereign, only to finally witness the true world.
Yet he couldn't stop questioning himself.
Was the world he saw truly the real one?
Amid countless deceptions, he had long since lost the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood. Furthermore, the blade of the Red Dust remained perpetually pressed against his neck, rendering him unable to move.
He was on the verge of going mad.
What he had experienced was far more agonizing than what Chen Changsheng had endured.
Chen Changsheng looked at him and said, "Only losers sit before you. Asking us is a waste of breath."
The Demon Sovereign nodded. "That's right."
A profound sense of powerlessness welled up in Chen Qi's heart.
Only now did he realize why the two men before him hadn't put up any resistance from the very beginning.
This was a tribulation with no end.
Time would completely grind away their temperaments. As incarnations of emotion and desire, they were forever trapped by the Red Dust. They could only find the meaning of their existence within endless Reincarnation and rebirth.
And yet, that mayfly-like curse continuously restricted their time in the world. The flesh was ultimately insufficient to stand against the heavens; no matter how immense their souls were, they could not make up for it.
They were like game pieces—the game pieces of the Heavenly Dao.
"Seniors, I'm tired..."
Chen Qi let out a long sigh. Right now, all he wanted to do was fall into a deep sleep.
Seeing him like this, Chen Changsheng let out a helpless sigh.
And so, Chen Qi fell asleep right then and there. It was unknown how long he would slumber. He was trying to escape this fate, but ultimately, this was a destiny he could never outrun.
Likewise, Chen Changsheng and the Demon Sovereign couldn't escape it either.
The Demon Sovereign didn't care. Looking at Chen Qi's state, he merely laughed. "Ah, there goes another one driven mad."
Chen Changsheng shook his head helplessly. "How is that any different from mocking yourself?"
"Mind your own business."
