More than fifty Dongxu Realm cultivators had perished.
Thousands of disciples had gone, never to return.
Such a devastating price was difficult for the cultivators of the Righteous Path to swallow. Hatred took root in their hearts, and the burning desire to eradicate the demonic path became the shared conviction of nearly every Righteous Path cultivator.
But wherever there was conflict, blood would inevitably flow.
In Chen Changsheng's view, this was nothing more than a clash of opposing stances. In fact, the deeper one thought about it, the clearer the underlying issues became.
He cared little for such things. The only thing occupying Chen Changsheng's thoughts now was when he would finally complete that Geographical Map.
...
Chen Lingyun had left the mountain many years ago. As she wandered through the Cultivation World, her experience deepened with every distant land she traversed. Only now did she realize that the world she had once seen was merely the tip of the iceberg—and even today, it remained just that.
She had traveled to many places, passing on her knowledge of farming. The mortals, regarded by most cultivators as insignificant weeds, never forgot her kindness in teaching them. A steady, endless stream of incense and faith power rose from the mortal world, ultimately gathering upon her. This transformation left Chen Lingyun utterly astounded.
She never expected such serendipity to descend upon her, but because of it, she finally understood what she was meant to do.
Pass on the Dao.
Impart the Dao of livelihood, the Dao of agriculture.
For Chen Lingyun, on this journey, the burden is heavy and the road is long.
She had lost track of the years since she left the mountain. Over the decades, she had journeyed through many lands, leaving behind countless traces of her presence. Because of this, she briefly made a name for herself in the Cultivation World, though the fame was fleeting.
On this particular day, as she prepared to head to her next destination, she spotted a familiar figure at a roadside tea stall.
The sight of those azure robes instantly pulled her thoughts back to decades past.
Chen Lingyun stepped forward and approached the tea stall. The man had his back to her, a brush in his hand as he wrote something down.
She walked up slowly, stopping right behind him.
At that moment, the tea stall owner noticed her and asked, "Young Lady, would you like some tea?"
Chen Changsheng's thoughts drifted away from the Geographical Map. He turned his head to look behind him.
A familiar face met his gaze.
Chen Changsheng stared in blank surprise.
Chen Lingyun saw his face clearly. After a brief moment of fluster, she said, "Chen Changsheng, you're Chen Changsheng! Do you still remember me? Chen Lingyun of Rosy Cloud Mountain. We share the same family name."
Chen Changsheng paused. He never expected they would cross paths again in this vast Cultivation World.
He slowly recovered his wits. Looking at the woman before him, he said, "This Chen still remembers your master, True Man Luoxia."
A bright smile blossomed on Chen Lingyun's face.
Neither spoke, but Chen Changsheng found himself infected by her smile, subconsciously mirroring it.
Of the four great joys in life, one was running into an old friend in a distant land.
...
Chen Lingyun treated Chen Changsheng to wine, fulfilling an agreement they had made long ago.
She ordered the most expensive wine and the finest meat.
Meeting him again, Chen Lingyun realized that Chen Changsheng hadn't changed in the slightest. His face was just as captivating, and his every casual movement exuded a gentle warmth that naturally drew people in.
"What have you been up to all these years?"
Chen Changsheng recounted the things he had been doing.
Chen Lingyun listened, a dazed look washing over her. "You're still drawing that Geographical Map?!"
"I am."
"How much have you drawn?"
In response, Chen Changsheng retrieved the Geographical Map.
When Chen Lingyun looked at it, she was utterly stunned.
Back then, vast swaths of this Geographical Map had been entirely blank, devoid of a single drop of ink. But now, winding paths, sprawling mountains, and flowing rivers were meticulously detailed across it.
Chen Lingyun couldn't even fathom how far Chen Changsheng must have traveled. She opened her mouth in disbelief and asked, "You've been to all these places?"
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "About twenty percent of it is from word of mouth. I've only marked their names, but haven't outlined their exact borders."
"Does that mean you've personally visited everywhere else?"
"You could say that."
Chen Lingyun's lips parted slightly as she muttered, "Amazing!"
She admired him from the bottom of her heart.
Looking over the depicted locations, she said, "Here, I've been here before. And here too, and over here..."
Chen Lingyun held the Geographical Map, chattering away without end.
She found that everywhere she had personally visited was meticulously marked down. There were even some obscure places she couldn't name herself, yet they were clearly labeled on the map.
Chen Lingyun looked at Chen Changsheng. "I've never met a cultivator like you."
Chen Changsheng smiled and replied, "This Chen simply has too much free time."
Chen Lingyun shook her head. "In the past, Master told me your ambitions lay in traversing a thousand mountains and ten thousand rivers. Back then, I didn't quite grasp what that truly meant, but now I understand..."
"Your ambition isn't merely the distant mountains and rivers. Rather, those endless mountains and rivers are already beneath your feet."
"This world is incomparably vast, yet your footprints are everywhere."
Staring at him, she added, "How am I even supposed to describe someone like you?"
Chen Changsheng pondered for a moment before offering, "A drifter."
Chen Lingyun burst into giggles. "That isn't exactly a flattering word."
"It amounts to the same thing."
Chen Changsheng laughed and took a sip of his wine. "This Chen just has too much free time."
"You aren't like other cultivators," Chen Lingyun mused. "They spend their lives chasing immortality, but the path you pursue is entirely different. It's so pure and detached from the mundane... making you seem much more like a true immortal master."
"You praise me too highly. I'm not that grand," Chen Changsheng replied. "I'm just a... well... even This Chen can't quite put it into words."
"Are you going to keep traveling?" Chen Lingyun asked.
"I am."
"There are still many blank spaces left to fill," Chen Changsheng explained.
Chen Lingyun thought for a long while before an idea took root in her mind. She suddenly changed the subject. "Do you still remember when we were back at Rosy Cloud Mountain?"
"What about it?"
"It's all your fault."
"Huh?"
Chen Changsheng looked completely bewildered.
Chen Lingyun crossed her arms and said, "It's exactly because you were so perfect. Later on, whenever I tried to find a Dao companion, I ended up despising all of them. Now, I'm practically an old maid!"
Chen Changsheng could only offer a helpless smile. "Cultivators don't really care about such things, do they?"
"Well, you have to take responsibility," Chen Lingyun declared. "How about this? Since I also have to keep traveling forward, why don't we journey together?"
Chen Changsheng met Chen Lingyun's gaze.
Feeling slightly overwhelmed, he sighed. "Could you at least rein in that stare of yours? You look like some sort of demoness."
"Do I?" Chen Lingyun blinked, seemingly oblivious.
Chen Changsheng had intended to refuse.
But Chen Lingyun just kept watching him with a smile.
He had a thousand excuses and explanations ready, yet Chen Lingyun seemed entirely deaf to them. She simply did not care.
In the end, Chen Changsheng could only sigh helplessly and accept her presence.
From then on, he had another companion on the road, a woman traveling alongside this wanderer of the mortal dust.
Chen Changsheng could not exactly say why. Several times, he harbored the urge to drive Chen Lingyun away, yet swallowed his words every time. This conflicting indecision was agonizingly grating.
Chen Lingyun led a donkey over from who-knew-where. She told Chen Changsheng, "Walking takes too much effort. Look how great this donkey is—hardworking and tireless. With just a bit of spiritual enlightenment, it can cover quite the distance."
"Hey, Chen Changsheng! Why are you walking away? Didn't you hear me?"
"Come on, donkey. Let's go after him."
The gentleman in green robes walked in front, while Chen Lingyun rode the donkey close behind.
Half a month passed in a flash.
Having a companion on the road was a good thing for Chen Lingyun.
But one day, Chen Changsheng suddenly vanished right before her eyes.
Right under her watchful gaze, the man simply disappeared.
Chen Lingyun sat on the donkey, staring blankly ahead.
She had no idea what had happened.
They had been walking along perfectly fine, but somehow, the man was just gone.
She turned her head and let out a soft laugh, though a hint of sorrow quickly surfaced in her eyes.
"Am I really that annoying?"
Chen Lingyun exhaled, her eyes reddening.
She did not understand what on earth had happened.
Chen Changsheng had merely returned to Reincarnation. This was his destiny.
A mortal's life did not hold many three-year spans.
But he, Chen Changsheng, had countless three-year cycles.
This was the most glaring difference between him and the people of the world.
To Chen Changsheng, parting ways right then and there was the best choice.
He had returned once more to the Dream Method within Reincarnation.
The chessboard had already been set up. The Demon Sovereign was watching him, waiting for him to take his seat.
Once Chen Changsheng sat down, the chess game began anew.
He would remain in this endless cycle of Reincarnation, waiting for the arrival of his destiny.
...
The years slipped through their fingers in the blink of an eye.
For Aqing, throughout these long years, she had always been searching for one person—one answer.
She had returned to Qingshan City and resumed managing that Peach Orchard.
In just a few years, the once-abandoned Peach Orchard now radiated with vibrant life.
Aqing sat on the edge of the Peach Orchard, turning the Thumb Ring on her finger.
She could not quite remember how many years this Thumb Ring had accompanied her. Her entire life had been transformed into something magnificent because of it, allowing her to settle and find her place in this world.
Yet, she had never again seen the person who first gave it to her.
Fortunately, this Peach Orchard was still here.
With the arrival of summer, the peaches had formed on the branches. The orchard was now fully restored to its former glory.
Aqing was munching on a peach when her gaze suddenly caught sight of two people approaching.
"Big Sister Nianyi, it's changed so much around here. Wasn't it abandoned before, though?"
Aqing snapped out of her reverie and looked toward the two women riding horses through the Peach Orchard.
She stared in mild surprise, immediately noticing that these two were out of the ordinary.
Just as Xuanji reached out to pick a fruit, Aqing spoke up, "The peaches still need a few days to fully ripen. They'll be a bit sour and astringent right now."
Xuanji stayed her hand and looked back, only to see a plainly dressed woman walking toward them.
"Big Sister, you are..."
Aqing said, "This Peach Orchard is my property."
"Property?"
Xuanji paused, somewhat confused. "Wasn't this place always abandoned before?"
Aqing replied, "Before, I was not in the Mortal World."
Tong Nianyi could not help but freeze upon hearing this.
She immediately said, "So it is a Supreme Immortal before us. My sister and I did not mean to trespass here. We hope the Supreme Immortal will not take offense."
Aqing shook her head. "It's fine. A lot of people pass through here nowadays. You aren't disturbing anything."
She paused, her gaze settling on Tong Nianyi. "You have the spiritual aura of plants and trees about you."
Tong Nianyi stiffened, but gave no reply.
Xuanji glanced between the two of them, utterly confused.
Then Aqing asked, "Are you human, or a demon?"
Tong Nianyi's heart skipped a beat, and she took a half-step back.
Xuanji abruptly stepped in front of Tong Nianyi. Her gaze turned guarded as she snapped, "What do you want?!"
Aqing shook her head. "I am just curious how such a strange condition could exist in this world."
Xuanji huffed, "So what if you've been to the upper realms? I'll have you know, your Grand Aunt here studied the Dao under the Quanshan Sect Master! I'm not afraid of you!"
Seeing this, Tong Nianyi reached out, placing a hand on Xuanji's shoulder and pulling her back.
She looked at Aqing and said, "Forgive me, but I cannot tell you the reason."
Aqing seemed to realize her own rudeness. After a moment of thought, she said, "I was too abrupt."
She looked at Tong Nianyi and suddenly added, "Come back in a few days when the peaches are ripe. I'll save a few good ones for you as an apology. How about it?"
Tong Nianyi felt entirely lost, not understanding what this person was trying to do.
"Big Sister Nianyi, let's go."
Xuanji pulled her away, and seeing this, Tong Nianyi had no choice but to leave with her.
As they left, she glanced back at Aqing in the Peach Orchard.
She found the woman incredibly strange.
Aqing remained standing in place. She seemed to catch a familiar shadow hovering over the two of them, especially on the woman called Nianyi.
"Changsheng?"
Aqing felt a wave of daze wash over her, unable to pinpoint the reason.
...
After Tong Nianyi and Xuanji returned to Qingshan City, they made their way back to Chuanfeng Alley.
The place was much more dilapidated than before.
"It's strange, really. After all these years, no one has claimed these courtyards."
Xuanji could not quite figure it out.
She only learned the reason after going out and asking around.
"You're asking about Chuanfeng Alley? What for?"
"Just curious."
"If you're thinking of claiming a courtyard there, I'd advise against it. Rumor has it that a Supreme Immortal once lived in that alley. On top of that, they say it's the former residence of the Imperial Court's Commandery Princess Ruyi. Not even the county magistrate dares to touch a single brick of that place. You'd have to have a death wish to try."
"So that's how it is..."
"Old man, you still know about Commandery Princess Ruyi?"
"Of course. When I was young, I heard the elders say that Commandery Princess Ruyi studied under an immortal. She never died; instead, she ascended to immortality. They say she even comes back to visit from time to time."
Xuanji did not reply to that. Whether or not she had ascended to immortality, Xuanji knew the truth better than anyone.
She just had not expected that after so many years, there were still people who remembered her Big Sister.
Commandery Princess Ruyi...
She was probably the most unconventional commandery princess in all the years of Great Jing.
