Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1376: Extravagant Hope

Escort Leader Qin knew word had leaked out after the events of that night.

There would be nothing but endless trouble from here on out.

So, upon arriving at the next city, he turned to Chen Changsheng. "Little Mister, the road ahead is going to be difficult. I wouldn't advise you to travel with us any longer."

Chen Changsheng pondered for a moment, then pulled out a piece of paper.

After sketching a few strokes onto it, he handed it to Escort Leader Qin.

"Please keep this safe, Escort Leader. In a critical moment, it may save your life. But until then, you must absolutely not open it!"

Escort Leader Qin was visibly stunned by these words.

He glanced at the unremarkable sheet of paper, but after a moment of thought, he tucked it away.

"Many thanks, Little Mister."

They parted ways just outside the city. The escort team pressed onward into the distance, while Chen Changsheng set off in another direction.

...

Night.

The sky was dim.

The caravan did not stop, lighting their torches and pushing forward.

Escort Leader Qin surveyed their surroundings, a deep sense of unease taking root in his heart.

His worst fears were soon realized.

Amid the dark night and high winds, a group of men and horses suddenly appeared on the main road ahead, looking as though they had been waiting for a long time.

Escort Leader Qin halted his steps. In the dark of night, neither side could clearly make out the other's faces.

"Good fellows ahead, might I ask which road you travel?"

But the figures opposite did not offer a single word in reply, suddenly charging right at them.

A chaotic melee erupted.

As an incoming saber swept just over Escort Leader Qin's head, he jolted in alarm. "An expert!"

This was absolutely no ordinary martial artist!

Escort Leader Qin dodged frantically, but his opponent's saber strikes rained down relentlessly, leaving him powerless to parry.

"Ah!!"

Screams rang out all around as his brothers were killed and wounded.

Escort Leader Qin was already trapped in a bitter fight. "We have no grudges between us," he yelled. "Why be so ruthless?"

"You're escorting a cargo you shouldn't be escorting!"

The man sneered, immediately demanding, "Where is the person?!"

Escort Leader Qin gasped for breath and swung his sword to attack.

Meanwhile, hiding beneath a horse carriage, a youth dressed in an escort's uniform felt his heart hammering. He wanted to seize the opportunity to escape, but the surrounding gazes made it difficult to find an opening.

The attacker landed a vicious kick on Escort Leader Qin, sending him crashing heavily to the ground.

"Pfft..."

He spat out a mouthful of blood. At this moment, the crumpled wad of paper tucked inside his clothes tumbled out.

He froze for a second, then snatched up the paper.

Suddenly remembering what the Little Mister had told him earlier that day, he hurriedly unfolded the slip of paper.

"Hum."

Suddenly, the ringing cry of a sword echoed.

Countless streams of Sword Qi erupted from the paper.

Everyone present leaped in shock as a Flying Sword darted through the dark night. In the blink of an eye, the sound of a longsword slicing a throat rang out.

"Thud..."

Silently, one person after another crumpled to the ground.

By the faint light of the moon, a breathless Escort Leader Qin stared blankly at this change. At this moment, those men became lambs to the slaughter. Wherever the Flying Sword flashed past, another life was snuffed out.

"Pfft!"

The man right in front of him had his throat pierced through, collapsing in an instant.

Amid a burst of screams, these men completely broke ranks, but a moment later, all sound vanished from the scene.

Corpses lay haphazardly across the main road, the vast majority of them sporting a single, fatal strike across the throat.

Escort Leader Qin gasped for air, staggering to his feet.

He looked left and right, his eyes filled with bewilderment.

"Boss..."

Escort Leader Qin hurriedly rushed over, only to find his brother's breath perilously weak. "Remember... my mother..." the man said.

After saying these words, the man's breath ceased.

Escort Leader Qin stood frozen in place, utterly lost at this moment.

After a brief daze, he hurriedly began searching again. Finally, beneath that horse carriage, he spotted the hiding youth.

Only then did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"Escort Leader, where are they?"

"They're all dead..."

At this moment, Chen Changsheng sat fishing by the riverside, preparing to catch a fish to fill his stomach.

He hadn't seen the Tongtian River in many years, and he couldn't help but miss the taste of that red-tailed fish.

Whether he could actually catch one was entirely up to luck.

As luck would have it, rain suddenly began to fall from the sky.

The rain spilled down, quickly drenching Chen Changsheng. Seeing this, he had no choice but to reel in his line and seek shelter beneath a tree.

"I didn't catch a fish, and ended up a drowned rat instead."

Chen Changsheng shook his head, thinking it was probably because he wasn't fated to enjoy such a meal.

As for that red-tailed fish, he might as well forget about it.

He exhaled softly, gazing out at the sudden rain.

"Come to think of it, if I caught one, who would be here to eat it?"

Chen Changsheng turned to leave, only to find a figure blocking his path.

Seeing the person standing before him, Chen Changsheng couldn't help but freeze.

"Uncle Chen, since you are here, why do you keep avoiding us?"

Ying En stared at him, her heart seemingly filled with endless questions.

Chen Changsheng replied, "The Dragon Lord passed away because of This Chen. I have no face to see you again."

Ying En shook her head. "That was Father's Tribulation."

Chen Changsheng did not elaborate, merely saying, "This Chen still has matters to attend to. It is inconvenient to speak further. I will take my leave."

With that, he walked right past Ying En without turning his head.

Ying En turned to look and said, "A Tribulation is a Tribulation. This was my Father's Tribulation, and it had nothing to do with you, Uncle Chen. I only hope you can look past it."

Chen Changsheng paused for a moment but offered no reply. A short while later, he vanished from Ying En's sight.

Ying En let out a soft sigh and secretly shook her head.

She looked out at the river, feeling that the sorrow in her heart was just like the river water, never ceasing.

...

Chen Changsheng spent the night in a ruined temple.

He lit a fire and leaned back against the weeds, unable to stop his mind from pondering the events of his past.

He sighed time and again, yet couldn't untangle the knots.

There were simply some things in this world that could not be easily let go. No matter what others said, he knew the truth in his own heart: every single one of these events was inextricably tied to him.

As Chen Changsheng watched the endlessly dancing flames, his thoughts drifted far away.

He recalled everything from the past.

In Qiuyue Fang, walking along the road, in Qingshan City...

Those memories seemed to fill his empty heart, but when everything snapped back to reality, it felt as though his soul was ruthlessly beaten from his body.

He was exactly like a walking corpse and running meat.

He did not know what he was doing, did not know where to go, and completely failed to understand the meaning of it all.

Just as the Demon Sovereign had once said: since they could not sever their emotions and desires, they would ultimately only lose themselves in the endless passage of time.

From the moment he arrived in this world, Chen Changsheng had never wanted to be some peerless hero. To live as an ordinary, entirely unremarkable person would have been enough. Yet, for him, even such a simple thing was nothing but an extravagant hope.

Chen Changsheng let out a long sigh. He felt inexplicably cold, yet when his hand neared the fire, he couldn't feel the slightest bit of warmth.

The chill in his heart was far beyond what this could melt away.
