Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1387: If It Were Not So

The sudden turn of events left Aqing deep in thought.

She suddenly realized how little she actually knew about Changsheng. What had happened over all those years? Where had he gone, and what exactly had he done?

Aqing looked at Qing Tianyou and asked, "Could you tell me more about this Mister Chen?"

Qing Tianyou paused. "Mister Chen didn't stay in the spirit cage for very long before he left, so I don't know much either."

"Then... who would know more?"

Qing Tianyou considered it for a moment. "Perhaps you could ask the Ink Dragon Lord of Beicang. He followed Mister Chen from very early on."

Aqing paused and thanked him.

Later, she traveled to Beicang in the Desolate Sea. For a cultivator, searching for someone in this Desolate Sea was not merely difficult; she also had to face sudden attacks from water demons. In such a vast expanse, there was no telling how many unseen dangers lurked.

After slaying more water demons than she could count, Aqing finally arrived at Beicang in the Desolate Sea.

The person standing before her, however, took her by surprise.

"You're the Dragon Palace Crown Prince!"

"I am," Ying Tianze replied. "The Ink Dragon Lord is currently managing the waterways of the Mortal World, so I am temporarily overseeing Beicang in his stead."

Aqing paused, not entirely understanding why Ying Tianze wasn't guarding the Water God's seat in the Mortal World. But she had no mind to ask, and simply explained her purpose for coming.

Ying Tianze was surprised after hearing her out.

"You want to ask about Uncle Chen?"

Hearing this address, Aqing froze for a moment. "Uncle?"

Ying Tianze collected himself and smiled at her. "Mister Chen and my father are close friends. As a junior, it's only natural that I address him as Uncle."

Although she hadn't found the Ink Dragon Lord, Aqing still learned a few things from Ying Tianze.

From the initial flood dragon's journey at West Bridge in Qiuyue Fang, to the Dragon Maiden receiving Mister's guidance to pursue Dragon Transformation through incense, and finally to the Dragon King's banquet—Ying Tianze shared everything he knew with Aqing.

Aqing pondered this. These events had all happened a very long time ago.

"What about recent years?"

Ying Tianze shook his head. "There has been very little news of Uncle Chen in recent years. In truth, you don't need to seek out the Ink Dragon Lord. The Ink Dragon Lord doesn't know much more, either. Most of the time, Uncle Chen walks this world alone, with few companions."

"What outsiders manage to learn is rarely anything of vital importance."

"Is that so..."

Aqing fell deep into thought. After a long while, she couldn't help but let out a long sigh.

Ying Tianze asked curiously, "Have you known Uncle Chen for a long time?"

Aqing thought for a moment. "I just met him early on."

Ying Tianze understood, and didn't ask further.

"If you still wish to learn more," he advised, "you might try searching the Mortal World. In this vast Cultivation World, Mister Chen rarely leaves any traces."

Aqing collected her thoughts and cupped her hands in thanks. "Thank you for the reminder."

"Mm. Let me escort you out."

Ying Tianze personally escorted Aqing to the nearest Flying Boat Ferry.

The chaos in the Desolate Sea was unimaginable. Ying Tianze couldn't even fathom how she had managed to make it to Beicang on her own.

And all just to inquire about a few things.

Watching Aqing board the Flying Vessel, Ying Tianze couldn't help but ponder.

He wondered what relationship this woman had with Uncle Chen.

Going to such lengths was truly moving.

...

After returning to the Mortal World, Aqing went to the Tongtian River to visit the Ink Dragon Lord.

The Ink Dragon Lord learned of her origins from her. After pondering for a moment, he said, "I've heard Yu Hongjin mention you."

Aqing paused, somewhat surprised herself.

Mo Yuan looked at her. "Yu Hongjin followed me on a trip to the Desolate Sea in her earlier years. Although she couldn't stay, I heard her chatter endlessly about the peaches outside Qingshan City. She mentioned you frequently. She calls you Sister Aqing, right?"

Aqing nodded.

Mo Yuan smiled warmly. "How is that little girl doing recently? Now that Hongyuan Tianxia has retreated, is she still staying in Yan County?"

Aqing replied, "I heard she later took in some remnant demons from Hongyuan Tianxia. I don't know what she is up to now."

"Her..."

Mo Yuan rubbed his chin. "That does seem like something she would do."

Aqing paused and asked, "Could you tell me..."

"...about Changsheng?"

Mo Yuan paused. "You've asked the wrong person, Miss Aqing. I am not a cultivator."

Aqing quickly clarified. "About Mister Chen."

Mo Yuan realized then that he had misunderstood her entirely.

"Ah, Mister Chen..."

He glanced at Aqing, vaguely recalling something Yu Hongjin had mentioned.

This Miss Aqing was very close to Mister Chen.

In Qingshan City, aside from Yu Hongjin's older sister, there was only this Miss Aqing.

At this thought, Mo Yuan asked, "Where should I begin?"

"From the very beginning, if possible?"

"I can."

Mo Yuan thought for a moment, searching his memories. "If we're starting from the beginning, then I have to start with Qiuyue Fang."

Mo Yuan always knew a bit more than others.

Back when they were in Shangjing City, he had even heard Ruyi speak of Mister Chen's experiences in Qingshan City. While he wouldn't dare claim he understood Mister Chen better than anyone else, he at least knew seventy or eighty percent of his story.

Mo Yuan spoke of the days at Liuyun Temple.

Pausing for a moment, Mo Yuan couldn't help but sigh with emotion. "Come to think of it, the days spent staying in that Daoist temple were the most peaceful."

"There was Miss Tao'er, Young Tong, and my little brother Cheng. Back then, the few of us were just like ordinary neighborhood kids. We looked out for each other, joked around together... And then there was when Miss Tao'er got married..."

Speaking of it stirred up memories from long ago.

Mo Yuan lost himself in them. When he snapped back and found himself sitting in this cold, quiet Dragon Palace, he couldn't help but let out a heavy sigh.

"Back then, Mister Chen wasn't as quiet and withdrawn as he is now."

Through Mo Yuan's words, Aqing heard of a different Chen Changsheng.

She seemed to understand why Chen Changsheng had later come to Qingshan City.

As his old acquaintances passed away, that place felt less and less like a home to him.

"Later, Mister Chen went to Qingshan City," Mo Yuan continued. "He seemed to be doing much better then compared to before, but that didn't last too long either."

Mo Yuan let out a long sigh. "Mister Chen just views these mortal matters far too heavily. Otherwise, where in this world could he not wander free and unfettered?"

Aqing slowly came back to herself from those words.

She lowered her head. After a long silence, she softly replied, "If it were not so, he wouldn't be Chen Changsheng."
