Complete silence reigned within Reincarnation. After the Demon Sovereign departed, the Dream Method vanished with him.
There was no physical body—only spirit, just a single thought.
Like many departed souls, having forgotten all their memories and fallen into this Reincarnation, they were numb. Knowing nothing, they could not be trapped by the passage of years.
But Chen Changsheng was different. He was the exception within Reincarnation, and to him, this place was sheer torment.
Whether the Demon Sovereign kept him company in Reincarnation or not, the place remained just as bleak. Chen Changsheng constantly endured this torment, relying on a sliver of hope as he waited for the years to pass.
He had thought it would always be this way. Yet today, a familiar silhouette suddenly appeared within his thoughts.
“Aqing?”
Chen Changsheng's eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
Why was she in Reincarnation?
After Chen Changsheng departed.
Aqing embarked on her journey once more. This time, however, things went much more smoothly than she had imagined.
She learned of Zhao Yuqing's whereabouts from a cultivator.
Following the trail, she finally found Zhao Yuqing in a mountain ravine.
To Aqing's surprise, Zhao Yuqing was nothing like the fiend rumors painted him to be. Instead, wearing a conical straw hat, he was busy harvesting rice in the fields with a sickle.
At that moment, he looked like an ordinary old farmer pouring all his strength into his work.
Astonishment filled Aqing's eyes.
She stared until Zhao Yuqing lifted his head to look at her.
Aqing froze for a moment before cupping her hands. “Greetings, Mountain Lord of Yunfu.”
Zhao Yuqing frowned slightly and set down his sickle.
He dusted off his clothes and asked coldly, “Do you need something?”
Aqing said, “I want to know how to enter and leave the Underworld.”
Zhao Yuqing walked over to the ditch to wash his hands. “You are quite bold. Who told you I knew how to enter and exit the Yellow Springs?”
“Fellow Daoist Xiao of Tianji Mountain.”
“Never heard of him.”
Zhao Yuqing stood up. “Go ask someone else. I have work to do.”
Aqing hesitated, then hurried after him.
But as Zhao Yuqing glanced her way, he noticed something and suddenly spoke. “You know Chen Changsheng?”
Aqing paused, a bit puzzled.
“You carry his Magical Power on you.”
Zhao Yuqing's words offered an explanation. “Why are you going to the Underworld?” he asked.
Aqing hesitated for a moment before saying, “To find the Rebirth Scripture.”
Zhao Yuqing froze at those words, his body visibly stiffening.
Seeing his reaction, Aqing asked in confusion, “Is something wrong?”
“You want to find the Rebirth Scripture?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know what it is?”
Zhao Yuqing immediately thought of Hu Yu and Yu Xuan. For a moment, he did not know how to explain it to the person before him.
He suddenly understood this girl's relationship with Chen Changsheng.
“I know.”
Zhao Yuqing asked, “Do you know what makes Chen Changsheng different?”
Hearing his question, Aqing replied, “You seem to know why I am looking for the Rebirth Scripture.”
“Heh...”
Zhao Yuqing shook his head. “Over the years, you are not the only one to have this idea.”
Aqing froze at his words, caught off guard.
Zhao Yuqing set his conical straw hat aside. “It is useless, do not bother trying. Attempting to catch up to Chen Changsheng is a fool's errand. You might as well ask yourself why something like the Rebirth Scripture exists in this world at all.”
Aqing frowned. “Isn't it for the Underworld?”
“The Underworld?”
Zhao Yuqing shook his head with a smile. “Now it might be for the Underworld. But initially, it came about as an attempt by someone who had the exact same idea as you.”
“Even she, the one who authored the Rebirth Scripture, failed to hold on to Chen Changsheng through the years. What chance do you have?”
Aqing was bewildered. “Who was she?” she asked curiously.
“A foolish girl, just like you.”
Zhao Yuqing let out a sigh. “You do not need to waste your effort searching for it. The Rebirth Scripture is just a book. It cannot change anything. Escaping Reincarnation will only lead to suffering the bitter consequences, to being abandoned by the heavens.”
These words plunged Aqing into a long silence.
Zhao Yuqing's statement threw her thoughts into chaos.
Someone had tried this before?
The Rebirth Scripture had actually been created for this exact reason.
It was a truth that left her struggling to calm down for a long time.
She did not stay with Zhao Yuqing for long. A moment later, she left, heading for parts unknown.
Only after she vanished into the distance did Zhao Yuqing slowly collect himself. “So many karmic debts in the Red Dust...” he murmured.
Countless people had marched down this path one after another. Couldn't there just be a few less?
He shook his head, not wanting to care about these matters anymore. He was better off just tending to the fields before him.
But to Zhao Yuqing's surprise, Aqing showed up again a few days later.
“I still want to go.”
Zhao Yuqing felt exasperated. Seeing her like this, he could only say, “I do not know the method to enter and leave the Underworld. Go find someone else.”
He had no other excuses left.
He just felt that Chen Changsheng caused too much grief. Such a fine young woman, yet he was forced to watch her jump straight into a sea of fire.
At the thought, a flare of anger rose in Zhao Yuqing's heart, and he swung his sickle with a bit more force.
Aqing suddenly spoke up. “You know how.”
Zhao Yuqing frowned slightly and cursed, “Scram!”
With a mere wave of his sleeve, Aqing was driven away.
Zhao Yuqing was, after all, one of the foremost cultivators in the world. Aqing's meager Dao Cultivation was nothing before him.
But Zhao Yuqing had underestimated Aqing's perseverance.
The next day, he saw Aqing again.
Just like before, she had come to beg for his help.
She was driven out by Zhao Yuqing time and time again, yet she always reappeared the next day.
Thus, their stalemate lasted for three full months.
The crops in the fields were completely harvested and the dry stalks burned away, yet Aqing remained.
Once winter arrived, snow began to fall from the sky.
Zhao Yuqing assumed she would not return, but unexpectedly, when he stepped out his door, he saw Aqing's figure waiting in the freezing snow.
He felt helpless. He had no idea how to talk this person out of it.
Aqing said, “It is fine if you refuse to help me. Just tell me about Changsheng. Why is he like this, and what other things happened in his past...”
Hearing this, Zhao Yuqing let out a light sigh. Looking at the pitiful girl, he gave it some thought before finally letting her into the house, sharing some trivial fragments of the past with her.
“Chen Changsheng, he was born with this fate.”
Zhao Yuqing took a sip of hot tea. “He has been like this from the very beginning. This is not a Post-Heaven matter. This is the price of Changsheng, and also his ultimate fate.”
“And yet, all of you constantly misunderstand one thing.”
“And that is the fact that he—Chen Changsheng—”
“Is not human!”
