To He Qing, Chen Changsheng's explanation was somewhat baffling.
What did he mean by her asking for it herself?
She could not understand a word of it.
Chen Changsheng said, "You only need to know that we knew each other in a past life."
"Did we?"
He Qing paused before asking, "How can you prove we knew each other in a past life?"
Chen Changsheng raised his hand, and a peach appeared in his palm.
"You used to pick these for me. Every year, in the Mortal World, in Qingshan City, in that Peach Orchard."
He Qing reached out and took it. She looked at the perfectly ordinary peach, feeling absolutely nothing.
"A peach?"
"Yes."
"It's completely ordinary."
She found the sudden presentation of a peach completely baffling.
"It's for you."
"For... me?"
"Yes."
"I don't want it."
He Qing handed the peach back and shook her head. "We don't know each other. Even if I knew you in my past life, I don't know you in this one. You can't lump the two together. I am me, not the previous me."
Chen Changsheng froze. After a brief silence, he put the peach away.
The two of them sat by the door, remaining silent for a long time.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" He Qing asked.
"I think you are right."
"Huh?"
Chen Changsheng stood up. "Get some rest. It was all just nonsense anyway."
He Qing watched the man walk into the house and shut the door behind him.
She hesitated a moment before speaking. "Regardless, thank you for saving me today."
"Mm."
An acknowledgment came from behind the door.
He Qing pursed her lips, then turned and left.
At the very least, she had learned a few things.
Even if those things did not seem all that important.
...
He Yulu hurried to Cloud Mist Immortal Mountain and was reunited with her daughter.
"Mother, I'm fine..."
Seeing her daughter safe and sound, He Yulu's racing heart finally settled.
She then asked, "What exactly happened?"
He Qing thought for a moment before answering, "It was just a case of mistaken identity."
"Mistaken... identity?"
"Probably."
Her answer was entirely ambiguous.
She simply did not know how to explain it to her mother.
Afterward, He Yulu went to see Elder Yun of Yunai Immortal Mountain. From him, she learned of this Mister Chen's origins.
She did not quite understand why such a senior expert would seek out her daughter, and she could not help but worry.
"Elder Yun, would it be possible for me to take my daughter back to Qingyu Mountain?"
Yun Li considered it, finding it a difficult decision to make. "I will go and speak with him about this matter," he said.
"Thank you, Elder Yun."
After some careful deliberation, Yun Li went to find Chen Changsheng.
He was no longer a lone cultivator. As an elder of an immortal mountain, he inevitably found himself in difficult positions. He had always stood by reason rather than taking sides, and that had never changed.
He had even prepared himself for an argument with Mister Chen.
Yet, before he could even step through the door, he heard Chen Changsheng say, "Let her go back."
Yun Li paused. "Mister Chen..."
Chen Changsheng pulled the door open. "This Chen has acted rather abruptly as of late. Putting both her and you in such a difficult position because of my actions was inappropriate."
A look of realization dawned on Yun Li. After a long moment, he cupped his hands and bowed. "Thank you, Mister."
"There is no need to thank me."
Chen Changsheng said, then added, "This Chen is heading down the mountain as well."
Yun Li hesitated. "Where might you be heading, Mister?"
"I do not know. Perhaps I will go down the mountain and open a Wine Tavern."
"Ah?"
"I meant exactly what I said."
Yun Li found himself even more thoroughly confused.
In the end, Chen Changsheng did exactly as he said. He opened a Wine Tavern right at the foot of Qingyu Mountain.
The alcohol in the Wine Tavern was incredibly cheap. Within half a year, everyone in the surrounding area knew of the place. People frequently dropped by for a drink, and during leisure hours, it would be packed to the brim.
Business was booming.
He Qing watched all of this unfold.
Brimming with curiosity, she would occasionally head down the mountain to buy alcohol.
Whenever Chen Changsheng saw her, he would always strike up a conversation.
"You... opened a Wine Tavern?"
"You are a grand and dignified Sword Immortal. Why on earth are you running a Wine Tavern?"
"I have too much free time," Chen Changsheng replied.
He looked at He Qing. "Do you like to drink?"
He Qing shook her head. "My mother won't let me, but I really do want to try some."
After a moment's thought, she asked, "Do you have any alcohol that won't make me drunk?"
Chen Changsheng pondered for a second, then went into the back room and brought out two small jars of wine.
"Peach Blossom Brew. It isn't intoxicating."
He Qing paused, blinking. "It really won't get me drunk?"
"It won't."
After a moment of hesitation, He Qing paid for it and quietly snuck the two jars of wine back up the mountain.
The Peach Blossom Brew was absolutely perfect for He Qing. It was deliciously sweet and did not burn her throat at all, leaving behind a fragrant aftertaste and a mouth full of peach aroma.
"So good!"
From then on, He Qing would frequently head down the mountain to buy wine.
One jar of wine was enough to last her half a month. She only dared to sneak a tiny cup every now and then, terrified that her mother might catch her.
When He Qing came to Chen Changsheng to buy wine once more, she asked in confusion, "Why is there only one jar left again this time? Are you out of stock? It's not easy for me to sneak down the mountain. I have to avoid my mother the whole time."
"That is all there is," Chen Changsheng said.
"I see... Never mind then."
But when He Qing came down the next time, she received the exact same answer.
There was only a single jar left once again.
He Qing grew a little angry. "What is this supposed to mean? You might be a Sword Immortal, but you can't just bully people like this! You clearly have more in stock, but you simply refuse to sell it to me."
Chen Changsheng paused. After a brief moment of hesitation, he walked into the back room.
He brought out a massive jar of wine.
"This is all of it."
"Take it."
He Qing froze in surprise.
"I am leaving," Chen Changsheng told her. "This wine will be enough to last you half a year."
He Qing pursed her lips and looked at Chen Changsheng. "You did this on purpose. You're just trying to make things difficult for me."
"I'm not."
Chen Changsheng replied, "You rarely come down the mountain. The more wine I sell you, the longer it will be before you come down to buy more."
Hearing this, He Qing froze right where she stood.
In a flash, she realized the underlying meaning behind his words.
"I... I'll be going now..."
Suddenly panicking, she spun around to leave, completely forgetting to take the wine.
"Don't forget your wine," Chen Changsheng called out.
He Qing hurried back in a fluster and snatched up that small jar of wine. Her retreating figure looked exactly like she was fleeing in a panic.
Upon returning to the mountain, He Qing sat in a daze, her cheeks flushed as she hugged the wine jar to her chest.
"What did he mean by that...?"
She took a sip of the wine, but found the taste somewhat strange. It didn't seem as delicious as it usually was.
She couldn't figure it out.
She was just a young girl who had yet to experience matters of the heart. How could she possibly handle words like those?
She tossed and turned that night, entirely unable to fall asleep.
Yet, by the time she finally went down the mountain again, the Wine Tavern had already closed its doors.
As for Chen Changsheng, there was no telling where he had gone.
