To He Qing, Zhao Yuqing simply wasn't human!
His Cultivation methods practically pushed a person to the brink of death. Just to force her to master a Divine Ability, Zhao Yuqing conjured a killing Formation and threw her right inside.
The Formation was nothing short of inhuman torture.
Some of it was real, and some of it was an illusion.
By the time He Qing stumbled out of that Formation, a full month had passed.
Physically and mentally exhausted, she had learned the Divine Ability but was left half-crippled in the process. It took a full half-month in bed before she finally recovered.
"Senior Zhao, I really don't want to learn anymore."
Zhao Yuqing merely glanced at her. "You know enough Divine Abilities for now. What comes next is much easier. Learning the sword—that's simple."
"Is it really simple?" He Qing asked, somewhat afraid.
But the reality was nothing of the sort.
To teach her Sword Intent, Zhao Yuqing didn't hesitate to cross thousands of miles, dragging He Qing to a desolate Snow Plain. He washed his hands of everything else; her only task was to survive. She could leave the moment she comprehended Sword Intent, and not a second before.
He Qing suffered bitterly in that endless, trackless blizzard.
"This isn't easy at all!"
He Qing was on the verge of a breakdown, but the longer she stayed in the heavy snow, the more her state of mind settled into tranquility.
It was incredibly quiet here, almost devoid of living creatures. Aside from the howling wind and snow, the only other sound was the voice within her own heart.
This finally brought a rare sense of peace to her usually chaotic mind.
Zhao Yuqing took it all in. He Qing's comprehension was truly terrible. Compared to the chosen geniuses he had seen, she was the lowest of the low, not even qualifying to be mentioned in the same breath.
Because of this, she could only rely on sheer, stubborn tenacity to carve out a path!
And He Qing possessed exactly that kind of reckless tenacity. Although she complained constantly, when it came down to it, her unyielding spirit drove her relentlessly forward.
At the very beginning, she had struggled to take a single step in the heavy snow.
Later, she became able to wield a longsword with ease amid the raging blizzard.
He Qing grew more and more accustomed to this tranquil land.
Her gaze grew brighter, and the sword in her hand became ever steadier.
The wind and snow could no longer shake her in the slightest.
...
Three years passed in the blink of an eye.
Under Zhao Yuqing's tutelage, He Qing underwent an immense transformation. She looked far more vibrant, and her aura had grown sharp and imposing. Sometimes, a single glance from her was enough to frighten away her Senior Brothers.
Such a change also caught He Yulu by surprise.
It felt as though it had happened overnight.
Her daughter, who had once been so ignorant about the path of Cultivation, now carried the demeanor of a senior expert.
It was truly unimaginable.
He Qing took a sip of Peach Blossom Brew and lounged on a long bench in the Wine Tavern, indulging in a rare moment of laziness.
"I say, Senior Zhao, that's enough, right? I shouldn't be too bad now."
Zhao Yuqing glanced at her. "Not bad? You're far from it. How long has it been since you reached the Dongxu Realm, yet you still haven't broken through to the next stage? Your Cultivation is nowhere near enough."
He Qing let out a long sigh, staring blankly as if life had lost all meaning.
She was the real victim here.
If she had known earlier, she never would have drunk that bowl of porridge.
She felt that this undeserved calamity had fallen upon her simply because Zhao Yuqing was being petty with Chen Changsheng.
But truth be told, He Qing was also incredibly grateful to Zhao Yuqing. If not for him, she never would have discovered that she could be so ruthless to herself, nor that she could ever reach such heights.
Zhao Yuqing said, "Only when you can beat Chen Changsheng in a fight will you truly be considered a top-tier cultivator."
"What!"
He Qing exclaimed, sitting bolt upright.
"Me?"
"Beat Senior Chen?"
He Qing found Zhao Yuqing's words completely incomprehensible.
What right or ability did she have to compete with Senior Chen?
"You lack confidence?" Zhao Yuqing asked.
"It's not that..." He Qing said. "Senior Zhao, are you misunderstanding something? Senior Chen is a Sword Immortal. His path of the Sword Immortal is renowned throughout the world for possessing the heaviest killing intent. How could I possibly beat him?"
Zhao Yuqing glanced at her and said, "What kind of Sword Immortal is he?"
"He's a half-baked amateur at best."
Zhao Yuqing continued, "Chen Changsheng just learns a little bit of everything, but masters nothing. First, he's lazy. Second, he doesn't understand the true fundamentals of Cultivation. The man is an anomaly."
"An anomaly?"
"Mhm..."
Zhao Yuqing murmured, "Those who emulate him fail; those who imitate him perish..."
"Hey..."
A voice suddenly called out from outside the Wine Tavern.
Zhao Yuqing paused and turned to look.
Chen Changsheng pushed the door open and walked into the Wine Tavern. "I was wondering who was slandering This Chen behind my back."
Zhao Yuqing shot him a sideways glance. "Then I'll insult you to your face. Listen closely."
He Qing stood up in pleasant surprise. "Senior Chen, when did you get back?"
"Just arrived."
Chen Changsheng looked at He Qing, then suddenly paused.
"Hmm?"
"You've changed quite a bit."
Chen Changsheng was a little surprised. It had only been a few years, yet He Qing's aura had surged drastically.
He Qing forced a smile. "It's all thanks to Senior Zhao."
Chen Changsheng looked toward Zhao Yuqing, his eyes seemingly asking a question.
Zhao Yuqing said, "Didn't you say it yourself? You told me to find an apprentice."
"So you picked her?"
"Is that a problem?"
Zhao Yuqing scoffed. "Could you have taught her properly? In a grand tournament, you couldn't even take the title of Chief. Are your meager skills really enough to pass muster?"
Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly and shook his head. "As you wish, but don't draw karma onto her."
Zhao Yuqing relented slightly at this. "I wouldn't dare."
"Good to know."
"Surnamed Chen, why are you acting so full of yourself?"
"Only you're allowed to run your mouth?"
He Qing stood off to the side, blinking. She hadn't even processed what was happening before the two of them started arguing.
Seriously...
Why?
They had only exchanged a few words, so how were they bickering again?
He Qing hurriedly shrank back. She was certain that nothing good would ever come from standing too close to these two.
Zhao Yuqing tossed out a bag of Spirit Rice.
"Have a taste of the Spirit Rice I grew! This time, I'll definitely make you concede!"
Chen Changsheng gave it a look and said, "How good could it possibly be?"
Zhao Yuqing retorted, "Better than your wine."
"You're absolutely dreaming."
"Taste it! Right now!"
Chen Changsheng glanced at him. "I'll go build a fire. If it tastes bad, I'm going to curse you out."
"I refuse to believe it. Let's see what flaws you can nitpick this time!"
Still bickering, the two walked outside the Wine Tavern.
They built a fire and boiled the porridge, not resting for a moment.
He Qing stood on the sidelines, shivering. She couldn't shake the feeling that a fight was about to break out at any moment.
Chen Changsheng scooped out a bowl and took a sip under Zhao Yuqing's watchful gaze.
"Isn't this just average?"
Hearing this, anger instantly flared in Zhao Yuqing's heart.
"Fine, fine, fine!"
Seeing the situation, He Qing hastily stammered, "I—I have business up on the mountain! I'm leaving first. Haha, I'll be going now!"
With that, she bolted, vanishing without a trace.
Glancing back, she saw a fierce gale blowing over—it was the surging pressure kicked up by Sword Qi.
He Qing didn't dare stick around for a single second longer.
They had really started fighting!
