Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1431: Guesses and Disappointment

The Demon Sovereign returned to the Mortal World in Chen Changsheng's place.

Chen Changsheng had entrusted him with a few tasks upon his return. They amounted to nothing more than checking on the Wine Tavern, seeing if He Qing was around, and making sure the wine supply was still sufficient.

Borrowing Chen Changsheng's body, the Demon Sovereign made the trip.

It had been a very long time since he had walked through this realm.

The changes were quite significant.

After entering the Wine Tavern, the Demon Sovereign took stock of the liquor. Quite a bit remained; it should be enough.

As for the girl named He Qing, he couldn't be bothered to seek her out.

But since it was a task entrusted by Chen Changsheng, he went through the motions. He would wait here for a day, and if she didn't show up, he would leave.

Unexpectedly, He Qing sensed something that very night and came down the mountain.

The Demon Sovereign was sitting in the Wine Tavern, drinking.

Seeing her push the door open, he paused in surprise.

He Qing walked over and sat down at the table.

Noticing the puzzled look in his eyes, she tentatively asked, "Senior Chen?"

The Demon Sovereign spoke up, "You came out here in the middle of the night?"

"I placed a Restrictive Seal on the Wine Tavern's door. If you returned, I would know."

"I saw it."

The Demon Sovereign paused, a bit confused. He distinctly remembered destroying that seal.

He had no idea what method the girl had used; he figured it must have been something Chen Changsheng had taught her.

He Qing asked, "Where have you been all these years, Senior Chen?"

"Just wandering around."

The Demon Sovereign asked, "Weren't you in the Mortal World? Why did you come back?"

"I wanted to come back."

"The Cultivation World is far more boring than the Mortal World."

"True, but everyone I know is here."

"Fair enough..."

The Demon Sovereign asked, "Did you come looking for me for a reason?"

He Qing pursed her lips. She wanted to ask her question, but it felt too abrupt, and she didn't know how to voice it.

The Demon Sovereign said, "I happen to have a matter to discuss."

He Qing looked up, waiting for him to speak.

The Demon Sovereign continued, "I'll be going away for a while, and I probably won't return for many years. I'll leave enough wine for you in the Wine Tavern, burying some of it in the ground. When you want a drink, just dig it up yourself."

He Qing stared blankly for a moment before asking, "Huaixu isn't coming back either?"

"I suppose not."

"Then..."

He Qing meant to say more, wanting to speak yet holding back.

The Demon Sovereign said, "Just focus on your Cultivation."

"Why?"

"What?"

He Qing pursed her lips and asked, "I wanted to ask you, Senior—what happened before? How did you turn into sand and dissipate?"

The Demon Sovereign said, "I have always been this way."

"What do you mean, 'always been this way'?"

"My lack of an explanation means you should stop asking."

The Demon Sovereign's tone was cold.

He Qing felt that the person before her had changed drastically. In the past, Senior Chen would never have spoken so coldly.

The moment she walked through the door today, she had sensed that something was off.

The Demon Sovereign handed her a cup of wine and said, "Drink. I will be leaving tomorrow."

He Qing continued, "I went to ask Senior Zhao, but he wouldn't tell me either."

"Him..."

The Demon Sovereign searched his memory. "Just a brat," he said.

"Hmm?"

He Qing found this strange, though she couldn't quite articulate why.

The Demon Sovereign said, "If you have no other business, then go back."

"I do."

With so many doubts bottled up inside her, He Qing spoke up. "Why do you only return once every three years? Where do you go during those three years? And why haven't I ever heard you or Senior Zhao mention it?"

The Demon Sovereign said, "I just die, that's all."

"Die?"

He Qing said, "But aren't you perfectly alive right now?"

"I am."

The Demon Sovereign said, "But that doesn't stop me from dying, does it?"

He Qing was bewildered. She sighed softly and said, "I don't understand."

"You don't need to."

The Demon Sovereign continued to brush her off.

He Qing could sense the annoyance in his eyes—an irritation displayed right on the surface, without the slightest attempt to hide it.

It was as if he had become a completely different person.

Having received no real answers in the face of such blatant dismissal, she realized she shouldn't stay any longer.

After a long moment of thought, she said, "One last thing. I won't ask anything else."

The Demon Sovereign seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. "Ask."

"Why is there always wine for me to drink?"

The Demon Sovereign paused, then replied, "What kind of question is that?"

He Qing stared at him in a daze for a second, then nodded in understanding.

She stood up with a sigh.

"Forgive me for the intrusion, Senior."

With that, He Qing departed the Wine Tavern.

After she left, the Wine Tavern fell quiet.

The Demon Sovereign thought for a moment and shook his head.

He couldn't quite understand Chen Changsheng.

This woman was rather ridiculous, too.

He tidied up the Wine Tavern and didn't bother waiting for tomorrow; he left that very night.

From then on, he began searching everywhere across the realm.

Searching for the physical body that the Heavenly Dao might have left behind in ancient times.

He felt that what Chen Changsheng had said held some possibility.

If he could find it, there might truly be a glimmer of hope for survival.

But this would undoubtedly take a long stretch of years.

...

Chen Changsheng resided within Reincarnation.

The absolute silence here actually made him a little uneasy.

When it came to mental fortitude, he was far inferior to the Demon Sovereign. If he were forced to stay in this cycle of Reincarnation indefinitely without the Dream Method to manifest illusions, he would probably go mad before long.

And so, six years later, Chen Changsheng returned to the world once more, thereby entering the Underworld.

When the Demon Sovereign woke up and returned to the Mortal World, he suddenly thought of something the moment he took a step.

"A physical body?"

He looked down at his own frame.

He could not help but furrow his brows.

A thought arose in his mind.

It seemed this physical body had existed right from the very beginning.

That was right!

As beings born of the seven emotions and six desires or the three corpses, how could they have possessed a physical body in the first place?

Then where did this physical body come from?

With this in mind, the Demon Sovereign tried cutting into the flesh of this body.

However, the result did not align with his theory.

It was merely an ordinary physical body.

Thinking of this, he could not help but feel disappointed.

The road ahead was long; he could only continue searching for clues.

He sifted through the myriad events of the past several millennia in his mind, attempting to glean a trace of a lead from them.

He made a circuit through the Cultivation World and then took a trip to the Mortal World.

Within this limited stretch of time, he had no choice but to search without stopping for a single moment.

All for this slim possibility.

If there truly was a chance to live for himself...

He genuinely wanted to see what that would look like with his own eyes.

Even though it would require an immensely long stretch of time for trial and error, it didn't matter. He had already been hiding away within the passage of years for who knew how long anyway.
