Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1435: An Unsettling Atmosphere

Zhao Yuqing somewhat regretted not killing Jiu Fengchun.

But had he actually gone through with it, he likely would have regretted it even more.

He knew the boy was not inherently bad. Deep down, Jiu Fengchun possessed a kind heart; it was only the Taotie Bloodline constantly acting up, causing him to lose his sense of self.

Because of that, he couldn't bring himself to strike. He had thrown Jiu Fengchun into the Snow Plain, hoping the boy would calm down and overcome himself, but the final result had been bitterly disappointing.

A sigh escaped Zhao Yuqing's lips.

Even this fiend who looked down upon the entire Cultivation World now found himself entangled in inner conflict.

He had no idea what kind of chaos Jiu Fengchun might stir up in the future. He only hoped that one day, the boy would truly conquer the Taotie Bloodline.

It was fine that he had left. Fine that he had left...

Zhao Yuqing had never cared much about this world anyway.

Deep within the mountains, Jiu Fengchun gnawed on the flesh and blood before him.

Ever since emerging from the Snow Plain, he had been eating non-stop. In just half a month, he had devoured every living creature across four mountains. If there was a demon core, he swallowed it as well.

There was nothing he couldn't digest, and his body bursting from the excess was an impossibility.

"Haa..."

Jiu Fengchun took a deep breath and slumped to the ground. His body, the corners of his mouth, and his hair were all stained with blood.

He panted, the long-lost sense of fullness finally bringing him a moment of clarity.

A long while later, he jerked upright and looked back.

The mountains behind him were deathly silent. Not a single blade of grass stirred.

Jiu Fengchun stared blankly for a moment. He pressed his lips together, then looked down at his own hands.

"What have I been doing..."

He swallowed hard, suddenly afraid of himself.

A sharp slap landed across his face.

Jiu Fengchun bolted down the mountain and threw himself into the lake.

The freezing water washed the bloodstains from his skin, releasing a massive bloom of crimson that seemed to dye the entire lake red.

"Hah... hah..."

Jiu Fengchun washed the blood from his body.

He was frantic. In that moment, he felt a maddening disgust for himself.

A single tear slid from the corner of his eye.

Now, he had absolutely nothing left. He was entirely alone.

"Master... Master..."

Jiu Fengchun didn't blame Zhao Yuqing. He understood better than anyone that no one could possibly tolerate the things he had done.

Given his Master's temperament, sparing his life was already the greatest mercy.

He wiped away a tear and waded back to the shore, sobbing.

He did not know where to go, nor did he know what he was supposed to do from now on.

He scrambled around blindly like a headless fly, devoid of purpose or direction. Worse still, he would often lose his sense of self to the hunger.

He was terrified.

Jiu Fengchun remembered when it first began. Back then, he had only eaten sweet potatoes. Later, he moved on to the fish in the streams. But gradually, unsatisfied, he began craving living creatures. At first, he would roast them, but eventually, he simply gnawed them raw.

He no longer minded the stench of blood; instead, he had grown to especially relish the taste.

"Ugh..."

Jiu Fengchun collapsed to the ground, dry heaving violently.

Now that his hunger had faded, an uncontrollable wave of nausea took its place. Yet, try as he might, nothing came up; it felt as though his stomach were completely empty.

He dreaded to think what he might eat in the future.

Jiu Fengchun was afraid.

He pondered by the lake for a long time. Finally, using his Divine Abilities, he sealed his own mouth shut.

Since he couldn't control the hunger, he had to control himself.

It would be just like his time in the Snow Plain. He hadn't starved to death after going so long without food, so what was there to fear?

He would never open his mouth again, nor would he utter another word.

A long while later, Jiu Fengchun left the lake. Taking a deep breath, he stepped into the Cultivation World. From this day forward, he would be completely alone.

...

"Clack."

A game piece snapped crisply against the chessboard.

The Demon Sovereign brought up his encounter with Jiu Fengchun.

"I originally intended to kill him," he said, "but he hid quite well. Truthfully, if I had investigated closely, I would have definitely found him. But there was no need. He wants to live so desperately, so I might as well let him keep living."

Chen Changsheng pulled his hand back. "Is his condition terrible?"

"Mhm."

The Demon Sovereign said, "There are quite a few corpses buried beneath that area, and he was even eating the corpses."

"And Zhao Yuqing?"

"Perhaps he didn't want to watch."

Chen Changsheng fingered a game piece, falling into thought.

The Demon Sovereign said, "Zhao Yuqing couldn't bring himself to strike. He's grown indecisive, which is quite rare."

"Indeed..."

Chen Changsheng felt the exact same way.

In short, it felt distinctly odd.

In his impression, Zhao Yuqing had always been a ruthlessly decisive man. How could he be swayed by emotion?

"Well, I returned empty-handed from this trip once again."

The Demon Sovereign sighed. "I'm starting to think the Heavenly Dao's physical vessel might not even exist. Perhaps it dissolved into the heavens back then, or maybe it was destroyed ahead of time."

Chen Changsheng said, "Keep searching. If there truly is nothing, then forget it."

"As the saying goes, opportunities cannot be forced," the Demon Sovereign said. "If you stop seeking them, they might appear right in front of you."

He let out a yawn. "I'm tired. I'll sleep for a while. You can take your time searching on your own."

Chen Changsheng thought about it and agreed.

Three years later, he returned to the world.

Chen Changsheng stretched, pulled out the Geographical Maps, and continued his search along the route the Demon Sovereign had left behind.

Along the way, however, he ran into quite a few incidents.

Once, he encountered cultivators of the Cultivation World hunting down ghost cultivators. Many cultivators had surrounded two ghost cultivators, but ultimately let them slip away.

At the time, the ghost cultivators had walked right past Chen Changsheng.

Coming up empty-handed, the pursuing cultivators took their frustration out on Chen Changsheng.

"Could you not see that those were ghost cultivators from the Demon Gate?"

Chen Changsheng adjusted his conical straw hat, too lazy to pay them any mind.

These cultivators, however, seemed unwilling to let it go and blocked his path.

"Fellow Daoist, give us an explanation. Those Demon Gate ghost cultivators passed right before your eyes, and you didn't even spare them a glance. Are you perhaps from the Demon Gate?"

Left with no other choice, Chen Changsheng drew his sword to reason with the group.

It only took a sliver of Sword Intent to send them fleeing in a blind panic.

There were simply far too many incidents like this.

His most direct realization was that ever since the Mysterious Gate formed their alliance, the new disciples of the major Immortal Sects were increasingly lacking in manners. It was as if they believed that by stepping onto the immortal path, they could look down upon all living beings.

This could not help but leave Chen Changsheng deeply pensive.

"This atmosphere seems a bit off," he murmured.

He felt that running into this kind of behavior once or twice was understandable, but he was encountering it far too frequently.

There was likely an underlying reason behind it.
