Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1439: Empress Dowager, Wu Yin

That same winter, the Ziwei Star shifted, and the Emperor Star wavered.

The Son of Heaven passed away.

Surrounded by a throng of ministers, the young prince ascended the throne.

His mother, Wu Yin, was honored as empress dowager, assisting the young emperor in managing court affairs.

Wang Yingying watched it all unfold, her mind in a daze.

She believed that in the current state of the world, for a woman to act as emperor was almost impossible. It was nothing short of blatant contempt for the officials standing before her.

"I fear this woman will not live long," Wang Yingying said.

But this time, Tong Nianyi did not hold back. She stated bluntly, "That is why I specifically retrieved the Imperial Seal and gave it to Wu Yin."

Wang Yingying froze, raising an eyebrow. "What did you say?"

Wang Yingying felt as if the Tong Nianyi before her had gone mad.

"What exactly are you trying to do?"

Wang Yingying said, "How can a mere woman stand against such worldly conventions? Let alone rising to power by usurping the state—how tragic is that?"

"This is what she wanted. I merely helped her along."

Tong Nianyi murmured.

Lost in thought, she remembered that woman covered in scars.

Back then, they had no chance, making wrong turns at every step. Now that the chessboard was set anew, it might not necessarily end in tragedy.

For some reason, Tong Nianyi just felt that this time would be different.

She felt that perhaps Wu Yin truly could change the world's perception.

...

Chen Changsheng traveled to the Mortal World.

He saw that the Mortal World had undergone many changes. The three teachings stood in a three-way balance, dividing the qi destiny among themselves and keeping each other in check.

Even so, this had allowed the world to return to a state of stability.

Chen Changsheng did not care what this place would become in the future; it was not his concern.

He had come to the Mortal World to look for clues.

Walking through these rivers and mountains once more always stirred a distinct feeling within him.

Now, however, he did not feel much sorrow. Instead, it was mostly relief, for everything here had changed.

Time could bury many things.

"Granduncle, what exactly are you looking for?"

Xuanji, who was supposed to be working for the Heavenly Dao, had abandoned her duties. It was mainly because of her granduncle; she had not seen him in many years.

When he first returned to the Mortal World, she was the one who had intercepted him, so she simply tagged along for fun.

Chen Changsheng said, "Whether I can find it or not depends entirely on fate. I can only say that the time has not yet come."

Seeing that he would not say, Xuanji did not press the issue.

She brought up He Qing instead. "He Qing hasn't come to the Mortal World in a long time. She inexplicably vanished back then."

"Her..."

Chen Changsheng thought for a moment and said, "Right now, she might be caught up in the conflict between the Mysterious Gate and the Demon Gate."

"I heard about that."

Xuanji said, "It seems the clash between the Demon Gate and the Mysterious Gate has gotten pretty fierce. An Immortal Mountain has already been wiped out."

"Lingyue Immortal Island."

Chen Changsheng confirmed, adding, "Not only that, but all the Immortal Sects in that region have been occupied by the Demon Gate."

"They've completely torn away all pretenses."

Xuanji blinked. "Then why not let He Qing come to the Mortal World? The Mortal World is so stable. It's not like the Cultivation World, with danger lurking on all sides."

Chen Changsheng smiled and said, "If she wants to become one of the top cultivators in this world, she's bound to face some hardships. The truth is, most demonic cultivators cannot do anything to her."

Chen Changsheng and Zhao Yuqing had compiled their life's knowledge into two books. If He Qing could not comprehend anything even with that, it would only mean she was not suited for Cultivation.

Xuanji sighed. "Chaos here, chaos there. There isn't a single peaceful place in this world."

"What counts as peaceful?"

"Um..."

Xuanji could not really say, but out of everything she had seen, nothing could ever be associated with peace.

Chen Changsheng paused before asking, "I heard there have been some changes in Shangjing City over the past two years."

Xuanji suddenly remembered. "Right! I almost forgot to tell you about that, Granduncle."

"That empress dowager's methods are truly formidable. She imprisoned the Human Sovereign and seized control of the Imperial Court herself. I have no idea how she managed it. Back in the day, Yan Nantian abolished the Prime Minister system to prevent something like this, but that Wu Yin still found a way."

"What surprised me even more,"

Xuanji continued, "is that the long-lost Imperial Jade Seal somehow fell into her hands. It makes killing her quite difficult."

Chen Changsheng was visibly stunned upon hearing this.

"The Imperial Jade Seal..."

He stroked his chin and said, "I remember this item was supposedly in the hands of the two great Daoshan."

"It was with the Sanyuan Elder."

Xuanji said, "Back then, the Imperial Jade Seal was originally supposed to be guarded by Priest Wuwei. But because his descendant, Wang Yingying, was the former director of the Imperial Observatory, that connection led to it being handed over to Priest Sanyuan for safekeeping instead."

Chen Changsheng said, "But doesn't Priest Sanyuan hold the orthodox Daoist lineage?"

"He did before, but now all three factions are fighting."

Xuanji said, "The previous emperor realized the influence the Daoist Gate had on public sentiment and grew somewhat wary, so he later introduced the Buddhist dao. Then, because of the decline of the court officials, the Literary Dao began to prosper. It has now evolved into a situation where the Three Teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism stand in a three-way stalemate."

"Moreover, I have no idea how Wu Yin did it, but she actually managed to get the Buddhist dao and the Daoist Gate—who have never gotten along—to help her together."

"It is my first time seeing these two teachings share the exact same goal."

Chen Changsheng said, "Perhaps she secretly promised them some benefit. Or perhaps the Buddhist dao and the Daoist Gate want to use this empress dowager to erase the Literary Dao."

"That seems to be the only possibility."

Xuanji muttered, "This woman truly has impressive methods. No wonder nothing has gone wrong over the past two years."

"What about her rule over the country?"

"Her rule..."

Xuanji smacked her lips and said, "It seems to be quite good as well. The people's livelihood has improved over the years, and the relationship between the three teachings has also gotten a bit better. I heard there were quite a few dissenting voices in the Imperial Court previously, but later on, those people were either dismissed from office or executed for various reasons. This empress dowager is quite a ruthless figure."

"Since she is a woman, she has to be ruthless. How else could she achieve her goals?"

"Come to think of it, that's true..."

Xuanji sighed and said, "Speaking of which, Granduncle, I'm actually a bit curious about what it feels like to be the emperor. The beauties of the Imperial Harem and all that—it actually sounds quite fun."

Hearing this, Chen Changsheng laughed heartily and said, "Why don't you go try it yourself?"

"No, no."

But Xuanji shook her head, saying, "I am a cultivator. Even if I had the capability, I wouldn't have the desire to try."
